“My father’s involvement with the Danny Thompson
golf tournament began with a $75,000 insurance
policy he received as owner of the Texas Rangers
at the time. He gave the money to Harmon Killebrew
and Ralph Harding to fund the golf tournament that
would benefit the research of Leukemia. He used his
powers of persuasion and considerable network to
find people to participate in the event over the next 33
years. He worked hard at its development contributed
generously to the cause. He was an effective promoter
and would get people to donate whom otherwise might
not. He would encourage people to bid in the auctions
and made sure “they stepped up to the plate” with a
good offer sometimes bidding against them in order to
increase the amount that would be contributed to the
fund. He loved the event and the people involved. His
family is very grateful that his contributions have been
recognized.”
