8 REVELATION is NOT a Mystery—TEACHER’S GUIDE THE PAST 3) GENESIS 3 records Satan’s challenge of God’s Word. Satan directly contradicts God’s instructions in GENESIS 2:16-17. GENESIS 3:1 Now the serpent was more crafty than any beast of the field which the Lord God had made. And he said to the woman, “Indeed, has God said, „You shall not eat from any tree of the garden?‟ “ 4) First, Satan changed God’s Words. He wanted Eve to think God was unreasonable. Satan’s motive was evil. GENESIS 3:4 And the serpent said to the woman, “You surely shall not die!” 5) Second, Satan contradicted God’s Word and substituted his own words. He declared, “You surely shall not die.” But God said they would “surely die”. Satan wanted to break the relationship between God and Adam and Eve. He wanted to trick Adam and Eve into following him (Satan) instead of God. b. Eve. 1) Eve was the second creature to change God’s Word. c. What God really said… Compare GENESIS 2:16-17 to 3:2-3 to see how Eve changed God’s Word. GENESIS 2:16-17 And the Lord God commanded the man saying, “From any tree of the garden you may eat freely, but from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat from it you will surely die.” d. What Eve claimed God said… GENESIS 3:2, 3 And the woman (Eve) said to the serpent, (Satan) “From the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat; but from the fruit of the tree which is in the middle of the garden, God has said, „You shall not eat from it or touch it, lest you die.‟ ‟‟. a. SEVEN BLESSINGS One Blessing ~ One Warning REVELATION 1:3; 22:18-19 9 they notice differences in Eve’s report of God’s Words. Be sure they notice three misquotes “or touch it”, “lest you die” and the omission of the word “freely”. Eve’s omission of “freely” indicates her complete lack of understanding of God’s grace. 1) It is easy to see what Eve did with the phrase “or touch it”... She added to God’s Word. God never said they could not touch the tree. 2) Eve also left out the word “freely” from God’s Word. When she omitted “freely”, Eve left out God’s grace. 3) Additionally, Eve softened the consequences of eating the fruit by saying “…lest you die”. God said “you shall surely die.” No “perhaps” or “maybe” was implied by God’s Words. 4) Adam and Eve died twice when they disobeyed God: Spiritual death (separation and alienation from God) was immediate, demonstrated by the fact that they hid from God after they ate the fruit. Though they lived physically for a while, the process of physical death began the moment they disobeyed. 4. CONCLUSIONS a. Danger. God’s Word is perfect just the way it is. It is dangerous to alter God’s meaning. b. Instructions. God gave the first man and woman instructions (His Word). Eve subtracted from God’s instructions and added words of her own. After she sinned, Eve took the fruit to Adam and he sinned. Since the time of Adam’s sin, the entire human race has suffered spiritual and physical death. Terrible consequences accompany the act of deliberately changing God’s Word. c. Responsibility. 1) God holds us responsible for understanding His message to us. We cannot insist on our own interpretation and alter God’s meaning. The study of Bibliology containing a simple definition of Interpretation is in Teacher’s Appendix, if teacher wishes to pursue that subject.
