Although <strong>the</strong> number of <strong>in</strong>tegrated<br />
alum<strong>in</strong>ium companies (i.e. companies<br />
<strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> all stages of alum<strong>in</strong>ium<br />
production) produc<strong>in</strong>g recycled alum<strong>in</strong>ium<br />
is on <strong>the</strong> rise, most exist<strong>in</strong>g recycl<strong>in</strong>g<br />
companies are non-<strong>in</strong>tegrated, privately<br />
owned and of medium size. In 2004, <strong>the</strong><br />
<strong>Europe</strong>an alum<strong>in</strong>ium recycl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>dustry<br />
numbered 160 ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and 126 remelt<strong>in</strong>g<br />
plants. This <strong>in</strong>dustry, compris<strong>in</strong>g all areas<br />
of collection, process<strong>in</strong>g, ref<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and<br />
remelt<strong>in</strong>g, currently provides more than<br />
10 000 direct and <strong>in</strong>direct jobs over all<br />
<strong>Europe</strong>.<br />
