Happy New Year Chargers!
I am so proud to welcome 2013 to our community. Let’s continue to work together to celebrate the diversity that
abounds at Dundee-Crown and focus on providing all students a positive high quality experience. Being in classrooms
the first week, I saw the relationships and connections our staff have built with students continue in our year
-long classes. Many teachers were focusing on reflecting and goal setting to make for a successful 2nd semester.
As for the semester long classes which started anew, the atmosphere was strong as the prospects of a fresh start
and new learning was the buzz.
During the last month, we were excited to see many graduates back for a quick visit or to pick up yearbooks. Former
students were eager to share their college experiences and to stress the importance of putting in the effort now,
in high school, for a successful post-secondary transition. It was a wonderful affirmation for our teachers! With
that, we do want to highlight security in that all visitors and guests are required to enter in the attendance office
and receive escorts to various areas of the building they are visiting.
This past Friday, I had our student of the term luncheon in which I had some fantastic conversations with students
and their experiences. Please help me celebrate those pictured left: Art –
Charger Pride - Gabrielle Winkel Jordan Stratton, Lenell Brantley,
Charger Pride is important to the culture of Dundee-Crown. I am proud to announce a significant decrease in tardies
for 2nd-8th period as well as an increase of staff recognizing students with charger cash. Also, a shout-out to
our Superfans who have been so supportive of our athletics! I can’t be more proud of the feedback and accolades
we get from other schools and administrators about the sportsmanship and enthusiasm of our fans.
Finally, I would like to highlight a couple segments in the following newsletter. First, after a wonderful concert at
school, our orchestra will be “on the road” for the music state convention! Also, our parent organizations do a
wonderful job supporting our students and the learning environment here; please do consider your contributions in
the upcoming Charger Classic as well as the Music Changes Lives event.
Have a cozy winter Chargers!
Spotlight: Dundee-Crown HS Orchestra
Illinois Music Educators All-State Convention
The Dundee-Crown High School Chamber Orchestra has been selected
to perform at the 2013 IMEA All-State Convention in Peoria. The performance
will be Thursday, January 24 th at 7:00 pm at the Civic Center
in Peoria.
After submitting an audition recording, they were chosen from schools
across the entire state of Illinois. Their extraordinarily demanding program
will include: Overture to Egmont by Ludwig van Beethoven,
Pavane by Gabriel Faure’ and Symphony No. 8 by Antonin Dvorak.
This ensemble measures up to any of the top tier high school orchestra programs in the state, and is representative as
well of the wonderful diversity that is Dundee-Crown. This honor is a testimonial to the hard work, dedication and talents
of the D-CHS Orchestra students. As the top ensemble, it is the product not only of dedicated high school faculty,
but of the extremely strong instrumental program in D300 beginning in 5 th grade. Students are excited to perform
and show their “Charger Pride” to the rest of the state. It is a very prestigious honor to play at this convention, and exemplifies
the very best of what it means to be a Charger!
Guest Artist Visit
On Friday, December 14, Alison Dalton, First Violinist with the
Chicago Symphony Orchestra, visited Dundee-Crown High
School to offer a Master Workshop with the Chamber Orchestra in
preparation for their performance at the Illinois Music Educators
Conference in January. Miss Dalton was invited by Sir Georg
Solti to become a member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra in
1987, and plays a 1707 Grancino of Milan violin. She was very
gracious to visit Dundee-Crown, and was impressed with the orchestra
program. She noted the "ambitious" task of a high school
orchestra taking on such complicated music such as the Symphony
#8 by Dvorak. She said it contains the most difficult violin
solo ever written for a concertmaster, and she offered many helpful
tips to players including asking violins to play along with the cello section in the first movement.
Dundee Crown Orchestra Director Mark Bettcher stated that he was completely blown away by Miss Dalton’s
talent, but even more by her ability to connect with students. He said that it was a learning experience for him as
well, one of the very best of his career.
Miss Dalton also tutored the Dundee-Crown Symphonic Orchestra and gave them many helpful tips to improve
their playing, including tips on holding the bow and “practice recipes,” or strategies which lead to success. Miss
Dalton is planning to return to Dundee-Crown again this school year.

Congratulations to Mary Jaskowiak
and Trevor Vogler for they have been
named an Honorable Mention for the
Daily Herald Leadership Team
The Leadership Team recognizes area high
school students who excel in volunteerism and
community service. Mary and Trevor were nominated
by D-CHS and an independent panel of
judges reviewed applications for the Leadership
Team throughout the Daily Herald readership area.
As an Honorable Mention, the judges recognize the commitment and effort
you have put forth in community service.
Thank you for commitment to volunteerism and pushing that Charger
Pride.
Counselors will continue individual meetings with students
to review graduation requirements, future plans, and
the 13-14 course selection process.
Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Representatives
will be available again this year to assist our
seniors with questions regarding the college application
process. Students may see their counselors for an appointment
for college are now listed online. Check out these
opportunities on the Counseling Department website by
looking under the Financial Aid section. New scholarships
arrive weekly so check back frequently.
College Visits
One important factor in evaluating a college is the campus
visit. Consider this: College Visitation Days—every student
may take up to two days during their junior and senior
years for the purpose of visiting a college. These days
do not count against a student’s attendance providing the
proper procedure is followed. See your Dundee-Crown
planner for details.
Every year representatives from many colleges come to
DundeeCrown High School to visit with our students.
Students should watch the Counseling Department calendar,
view the website, or listen to announcements in order
to learn when these admissions representatives are available.
College representatives meet with students in the
counseling office during lunches.
Transcript Requests
High school transcripts are provided to students when requested
Work Permits
The Department of Labor requires a work permit for all persons under the age of
16. The first step is for the minor to obtain a letter of intent from the prospective
employer stating his or her name, the job and its description, signed by a manager.
Then that letter, the minor’s birth certificate issued from the county of birth and
social security card must be brought to the Main Office by the parent or legal
guardian. Students may not submit these materials themselves. Students under the
age of 16 who wish to work are restricted in the number of hours they can be at
work each day and week. There are also many restrictions for minors on the types
of businesses they are allowed to work in and the types of jobs they may be employed
to do. Hazardous jobs utilizing chemicals or power equipment are among
those that are unacceptable.
History
What: College and Career Fair at DCHS
When: Friday, February 15, 2012
You are your child’s first and best role model. After all, he or she is always watching you and listening to what you say about the world of
work. You set the tone for success by encouraging your child’s interests and goals. Discuss your own experience and what you’ve liked and
disliked about your employment. Find “teachable moments” such as talking about the jobs you see on screen as you watch TV together.
One way to help your student make decisions is by giving good, solid information. This is where the DCHS Guidance Department can help.
Another way to assist your child is by having a clear plan. Studies show that a clear goal and a plan to reach it keeps kids more motivated and
less likely to drop out of school-and a high school diploma is needed for almost every job nowadays. So here are the DCHS Guidance Department
suggestions for planning:
Freshman Year:
Begin exploring interests. Look at which activities your student enjoys most and help them think about potential careers. Start
learning about internet career planning resources such as www.careercrusing.com. DCHS counselors will be doing interest inventory
workshops with all Freshmen to help them begin their career plan. They can even set up a portfolio in order to keep track of requirements
and related courses that support their career directions.
Sophomore Year:
Join organizations and volunteer in fields related to their intended career goals.
Take the PLAN test (a pre-ACT test). This will give each student a starting point of discussion when they meet with their counselors
to discuss their Four Plus One plan. Attend the College and Career Fair and begin making inquiries at schools they may be interested in
attending.
Junior Year:
Consider all opportunities available through DCHS Guidance including internships, military service, Middle College courses, Tech
Prep courses, Otto Engineering Business Partnership Program, employment as well as the traditional four year college.
Schedule the SAT and/or ACT for the fall of the junior year.
Talk to guidance counselors and the programs coordinator for more information on schools and careers. They can be helpful in making
sure all timelines are met. Attend the College and Career Fair and begin making inquiries at schools they may be interested in attending.
Consider making College visits to particular schools.
Senior Year:
Explore ways to observe people on the job like school sponsored internships or work experience programs.
Generate a resume and learn about writing a college entrance essay in Career Cruising.
Check Financial Aid/Scholarship possibilities in the Career Cruising Financial Aid Selector and from the DCHS Guidance web site.
Apply for financial aid by completing the FASFA in early January. Get personal help from ISAC representatives available every Thursday
in the College and Career Center.
Use the Employment section of Career Cruising to fine tune cover letters, resumes, and interviewing skills.
Last year the Guidance Department has more than 65 institutions attend the Third Annual College and Career Fair. This year we plan to increase
that number. Together, we can help your student achieve their college and career goals.
