Greetings Chargers!
February is the month for celebrating friendship! How appropriate then to have our stu‐
dents of the term bring up during their recent luncheon the sense of community they
feel at Dundee‐Crown. It rings true from their conversation that our diversity is a
strength we need to cherish and promote. Amazingly, their friendships permeate the tra‐
ditional clicks. Jocks and cheerleaders, music fanatics including rappers, lovers of goth
and animae, traditional and non‐traditional learners have become friends. Students ac‐
cept each other for who they are
and what they have to offer each
other. I simply love hearing the stu‐
dents share those experiences. Let’s
make February the month where we
continue to support our differences
and celebrate our diversity!

Northrop Grumman sponsors a mentoring and scholarship
program called WORTHY ‐Worthwhile to Help High School
Youth. This program provides mentees with an introduc‐
tion to the business world with a special emphasis on tech‐
nology, including engineering and computer science. Mentees are paired with two mentors who pro‐
vide career guidance and academic advice. Mentees are eligible for part‐time, summer employment
through Northrop Grumman, as well as partial
scholarships for college after successful comple‐
tion of the program. It was my honor to spend
an evening with officials from Northrop Grum‐
man, the mentees and their parents, and fellow
school staff from the surrounding communities.
Dundee‐Crown is proud to celebrate our five
mentees: Mario Sanchez, Vanessa Martinez‐
Torres, Malik Washington, Kevin Dispensa and Monica Delgado! Way to show your Charger Pride! If
your student is interested in applying to be a mentee for next year please see their guidance
counselor for the application.

SPORTS CLEARANCE:
Any student interested in playing a sport must be
cleared through the Athletic Office prior to the
start of the season. You must have a current
physical, a current emergency card, a current Athletic Policy form on
file and athletic fee paid in full. The forms can be picked–up in the
Athletic Office or download them from the Athletic website. They are
to be filled out and returned to the ATHLETIC OFFICE (not the coach)
during the times listed below. Payment will be made in the Main Of‐
fice when paperwork is turned in. NO ATHLETE CAN PARTICIPATE OR
TRYOUT UNTIL FEES ARE PAID.

Kyle Shropshire placed 3rd at the Upper Great Lakes Re‐
gionals held in Minnesota, which qualified him for the
Midwest Sectionals in Colorado.
At sectionals, he placed 4th and advanced to The 2012
Prudential U.S. Figure Skating Championships held in San
Jose, California.

How you are assessed:
�� Observation of typing technique by a teacher.
�� Three minute timing at a minimum of 35 words a minute
�� with 3 or fewer errors
�� Typing the above documents with correct formatting

Numerous outbreaks of pertussis (whooping cough) have occurred recently
among school children in Illinois. Pertussis is easily transmitted through
coughing and sneezing and may cause an illness that persists for weeks to
months. Pertussis does not typically cause severe illness in healthy students,
but can cause prolonged absences from school and extracurricular activi‐
ties. In addition, pertussis can be transmitted from healthy students to in‐
fants and individuals with chronic illnesses, for whom pertussis can be life‐
threatening. Protection against pertussis begins to wear off during grade
school. This leaves pre‐teens, teenagers and adults at risk for this illness.
To address the increase in pertussis cases among older students, a booster
vaccination (called Tdap) is recommended for all students in grades six
through twelve.
This fall, students entering 6th and 9th grades
will be required to provide proof of Tdap vaccination
along with the school physical forms that
are also required for these grades.

How does Dundee Crown show its gratitude?
Through letters from the heart.

At the end of January, Dundee Crown students pulled together to show the troops overseas they
care. Over 80 letters to service members were written to be sent to Operation Gratitude out of Van
Nuys, California. Operation Gratitude sends over 100,000 care packages to service members who are
deployed overseas each year. And in every package is a very special gift, a handwritten letter from a
person who cares back home in America. For many members of service, this is the only mail they
ever receive.
I know they will truly be appreciated by each and
every service member that receives them. However,
there are still many service members who have not
received a care package, and that is where the District
300 family can help! If you, your family, or
your friends would like to write letters to service
members overseas, would like to donate items, or
make crafts for the care packages, please visit operationgratitude.com
to see how you can make a difference
to a soldier far away from home.
The students of Dundee Crown have written and created
beautiful letters and pieces of artwork that are to be included
in a care package they send. One student wrote,
"Some heroes wear capes, mine wear combat
boots". Another writes, "I hope you guys feel like heros,
because you are". A Class of 2012 student shared what
most of us at Dundee Crown wish for all our troops, "You
are always in our hearts and minds, we hope you come
home safe".
The letters have been a joy to read. I have been blown
away by the maturity and thoughtfulness that our students
have put into these letters.

Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC) Rep‐
resentatives will be available on Thursdays to assist
our seniors with questions regarding the college ap‐
plication process and the FAFSA. Representatives
will meet with students in the Career Center located
in the Counseling Department from 10:00am –
3:00pm.
Career Cruising
Career Cruising login information will be given to all
9th grade students (all others have already received
theirs). During 2nd semester, counselors will begin
meeting with individual classes to provide instruc‐
tion on how to use the program. Don’t know what
Career Cruising is? Check it out at
www.careercruising.com. Career Cruising is an
online tool career guidance and planning system
that can be used by all students and students can
access it for free.
Dundee Township Rotary Club Scholarships‐
Several scholarships are available for graduating
seniors planning to attend an accredited two or four
‐year college, university, certified vocational school
or technical institution on a full or part time basis.
Applicant must live in the Dundee Township or be
an active member of the Dundee Crown Rotary In‐
teract Club. Pick up the application from the coun‐
seling office secretary, Mrs. Bober.
Deadline: February 17, 2012 Completed applica‐

New scholarships arrive weekly. You may also get
applications and a hard copy of the bulletin from the
Counseling Department secretary.
College Representatives
Every year representatives from many colleges
come to Dundee‐Crown High School to visit with our
students. Students should watch the Counseling
Department calendar, view the website, or listen to
announcements in order to learn when these admis‐
sions representatives are available. College repre‐
sentatives meet with students in the counseling of‐
fice during lunches.

NEW SCHOLARSHIP OPPORTUNITY
Christian Stilwell Scholarship for Exceptional Char‐
acter In memory of Christian Stilwell, this scholar‐
ship is to award a student from the class of 2012
who shows a heart towards serving others in his
community and or school. The student shows a will‐
ingness to help others no matter the task and at no
benefit to self. The student values the relationships
they have with their peers and faculty of D‐CHS. Ap‐
plications available in the counseling office from
Mrs. Bober. Deadline: February 15, 2012 To com‐
plete the application you must have a teacher or
your counselor nominate you on the attached
form. Christian Stilwell Scholarship for Leader‐
ship In memory of Christian Stilwell, this scholarship
is to award a student who has been successful at
leading others. They are respected by their peers
and teachers alike. They are able to bring others to‐
gether to work towards a common goal. Must be a
2012 graduating senior. Application available in the
counseling office, from Mrs. Bober. Deadline: Feb‐
ruary 15, 2012. Applicant must get teacher or coun‐
selor to sign nomination form in addition to appli‐
cation components.
College Visits
One important factor in evaluating a college is
the campus visit. Consider this:
College Visitation Days—every student may
take up to two days during their junior and sen‐
ior years for the purpose of visiting a college.
These days do not count against a
student’s attendance providing the proper pro‐
cedure is followed. See your Dundee‐Crown
planner for details.
Transcript Requests
High school transcripts are provided to stu‐
dents when requested with the Transcript Re‐
lease form available in the Counseling Office.
There is a minimum of a 48 hour waiting period
before a transcript can be prepared due to the
volume of requests. Students should keep this
in mind when needing transcripts to be sent by
a specific deadline date. The first 5 requested
Official Transcripts are free to current students.
Any additional Official Transcripts cost $5.00
per copy.

will feature a fabulous buffet luncheon, performances by Dundee-Crown’s very own stellar
music students, and a silent auction whose proceeds will help benefit the advancement of
music education of D-C’s music students. We need your help to make it a success. Please
consider contributing an item to the auction/raffle. You, your employer, or both can donate
the item. Some items that tend to sell well include: gift certificates, jewelry, wine, golf
