Since the entire membership has an opportunity to suggest and respond to issues before the delegates, it is suggested that the governing body take these suggestions more seriously than issues raised elsewhere. If you would like to have input on this issue, you can contact the AMTA Oregon Chapter or one of this year's delegates: Ted Adams, Michael Blackmore, Renee Smith or John Combe. I would like to introduce you to one of the ways AMTA-OR members are serving in our organization. We have many AMTA-OR members who are not able to give a lot of time to a volunteer position. The House of Delegates (HOD) position is very important, but not a major time investor. The responsibility of this person is to represent the state membership in the annual meeting. To do this you need to be in contact with other members of our chapter and be able to attend the AMTA National Annual Meeting (this year we are going to Nashville in October). Attendance at chapter meetings before and after is a must, and we request a report to print in the newsletter when you get back. I would like to thank Renee Smith, one of this year's delegates, who wrote the following article to inform you on the current issue being discussed by the HOD. House of Delegates When you think of the AMTA National Convention, you probably picture attending continuing education seminars. You may think of spending several days surrounded by LMTs and other health professionals. The learning and bonding are highlights of the convention. There is another aspect to the convention that may not come immediately to mind. The AMTA convenes an annual House of Delegates (HOD) at the beginning of each convention. Before the HOD is convened, issues have been circulated to all members of the HOD, and local AMTA members offer feedback. This year, the HOD has one issue to consider. It is in regard to the handling of recommendations made by the HOD. When the HOD decides to make a recommendation to the AMTA governing body, the recommendation is passed through a committee. August Cookie Master Summary Fijian Massage — with Lolita Knight, LMP, BA If you missed the Fijian Massage "Feets On" demonstration of how to massage your clients with a deeper, easier and more gentle approach, then you missed getting individual instruction as Lolita Knight actually taught AMTA-OR members how to lie down or sit in a chair and massage the upper back area. Members were surprised at how deep and beneficial the short massage was in helping them with upper back problems. No effort was need for pressure as the weight of the legs provided all the pressure that most members wanted. The AMTA- OR Video Lending Library has a DVD copy of the Fijian Massage for rent and Lolita is teaching an 8-hour class at the 2004 AMTA National Convention in Nashville, Saturday, October 9. Barefoot massage of all types are gaining in popularity and AMTA-OR members were happy to have this sample of one technique that originated in Fiji, using only the feet. AMTA Press Release Building a Brighter Future for Massage Therapy — Gini Ohlson, Foundation Director The Foundation Board of Trustees is pleased to announce that on September 1, 2004, the American Massage Therapy Association (AMTA) Foundation will become THE MASSAGE THERAPY FOUNDATION. The AMTA has been visionary in the endeavors that it has launched on behalf of massage therapists, and as the Sustaining Benefactor of a charitable Foundation that works to ensure a healthy future for massage therapy by promoting community service, education, and rigorous scientific research, AMTA’s inherent altruism and farsightedness is evident. AMTA members and chapters have always been our largest individual group of contributors, and it is truly AMTA members who have assured that the Foundation has grown and flourished. Massage therapists, schools, and vendors from many organizations have begun to support the work of the Foundation.
