She is theowner of Paschelke MassageCenter in Marcola, Oregon. Shealso does on-site massage atevents and businesses, andteaches Paschelke workshops.Paschelke (puh-SHELL-key) method is a simpleyet powerful method of massage. The results youachieve by using Paschelke Massage are not determinedby your size, hand strength, or age.Achieve faster muscle relaxation with less effortand less discomfort for your clients. Be able towork on clients who want to be fully clothed. With Paschelke massage each single movementcombines vibration, pressure, friction or crossfriction and manipulation of muscle fiber into arhythmic motion. Gentle rocking is created whileapplying the technique. Neuromuscular relaxation, lengthening of muscle fiber and balancing ofthe body’s energy flow are the results. The padsof the fingertips or thumbs most commonly applythe "movement." Each treatment is tailored to theindividual's level of sensitivity. The tension isquickly removed layer by layer. More pain doesnot necessarily mean better results. Discomfortand pain are kept to a minimum.Whether you work out of a massage office or doOn-Site to business or events, Paschelke Massageis the technique of choice. In the massage officeyou have the freedom of offering treatments usinga lotion or oil or working over clothing. Her experience as a volunteer has beenlimited, and we had to remember that as we proceeded overthe weekend. However, we discovered some incredible talentthat none of the rest of us have. Susan is going to be a HUGEasset over the next two years as the chapter progresses into thefuture. Therefore, Green is good.“Green” is also the hot word or phrase used by manybusinesses and industries these days looking to lureenvironmentally conscious customers. After four years ormore of giving lip service, stepping forward and falling back, running into unexpected obstacles and circumstances, thisboard has committed itself to reducing waste and expense byturning the Chapter Newsletter into an electronic product. This issue will be the last quarterly newsletter you receive inthe mail unless you notify the board. The chapter willcontinue to mail one per year, sending it to all AMTA-ORmembers and the OBMT mailing list. All future quarterlyletters will be distributed via email and the chapter website. Itis important that you notify the National office anytime youchange your email address, as this is our only source ofcorrect information. The amount of “Green” saved by going “Green” is rathersignificant. The Board of Directors has many areas of thebudget to consider directing this money toward, including theContact the Editor for submission deadlines.Visit us at: www.amta-or.org2AMTA Oregon NewsApril 2011ABOUT THIS PUBLICATIONContributions are welcome; all submissions must include a legible signature and phone number and may be edited for space andclarification. Jody had afamily emergency in February, which left Mike Blackmoreand I working furiously at the very end to create your bestslate for election of officers and delegates. Mike and I weredelighted that all positions were filled by dedicated professionalmembers, and members present at the AMTA-OregonAnnual Convention had a full slate of officers and delegates tovote on.First Vice President elected was John Combe. Among otherthings, John is a past-President, LMT of the Year, and winnerof the 2011 Meritorious award. Mike Blackmore was John'sgreatest support during John's Presidency, and John will nowbe Mike's greatest support during his presidency. These twomen work so well together, I could not have been morepleased that John agreed to support Mike in this way. Mikeand John are also co-chairing the AMTA National Conventioncoming to Portland this October.Another Meritorious Award winner, Brandi Walton agreed tocontinue, and was re-elected as our Treasurer for anotherterm, for which I am deeply grateful. Brandi has been ourmost dedicated, steadfast, and accurate treasurer in AMTA-Oregon history, and I am more than delighted Brandi agreedto continue in this capacity.Third Vice President elected from the floor was Susan Baer. Ifyou attended AMTA-Oregon's 2010 Annual Convention, youwould have met her there as an exhibitor and creator ofThumbby. I was impressed to see Susan take her Thumbby toAMTA National Convention in Minniappolis, Minnesota, where I found her to have great enthusiasm about the future ofTreasurer’s ReportFinancial Report as of March 2011Submitted by Brandi Walton, LMT #3218, AMTA-OR TreasurerPacific Continental Bank: $22,261.59Invesco Investment Services: $29,442.21massage therapy. Susan has been an LMT for more than 20years, but just joined AMTA at National Convention in Minnesota.Since joining, she has attended all of our AMTA-Oregon meetings, and expressed a desire to help AMTA-Oregon in whatever capacity she could. I felt Susan would bea great fit with her enthusiasm and drive as Third Vice President. Please welcome Susan with your support.I brought a slate of members willing to run for Delegate to themeeting, but had only four: Judy Cole, Leslie Giese(immediate Past President), John Combe (Past President), andmyself. Mike agreed to run also so the members would havemore than four names to vote for, and at the meeting SusanBaer also agreed to run, so we had a total of six names to voteon at the meeting. The Delegate election was a little differentthis year. Members voted in favor of four Delegates. The toptwo names with the most votes were elected for a 2-year term;the next two names with the second most votes were electedfor a 1-year term; and the two names with the least votes wereelected as the two alternates. Your elected Delegates are asfollows:2-Year Term Delegates: Mike Blackmore and Leslie Giese1-Year Term Delegates: John Combe and Tammy FelixAlternate Delegates: Judy Cole and Susan BaerCongratulations to our elected officers. AMTA-OR Convention Awards— by Leslie Giese, LMT #5975Awards ChairAMTA-Oregon chapter is proud each year to acknowledgeand congratulate members who make a commitment toAMTA, the profession and the community. This year the longevity award went to three members whohave been with AMTA since 1985 — 25 years: Donna Gerryof Lebanon, who was there to receive her award; LeonorHorden of Roseburg, weather kept her from being there; andAnne Jaqua of Portland, who was in Brazil and unable toattend. We as a membership set aside $500 each year to award an upand coming future massage therapist to help them with thecost of their education. This is the hardest of the awards thatthe committee has to decide. All the students presented aregoing to ensure that our profession is on the right track. It was very hard to make the phone call to those who did notreceive the scholarship, but is was great to call this year's winner,Robert E. White (pictured on front page) of OregonSchool of Massage in Salem. His instructors and fellow studentslook to him as a model student and an active participantin the massage community. He is a person who "walks thetalk" and is an incredible morale booster by his willingness toshare with laughter in the classroom when things get tough. He always goes above and beyond when he participates insomething.tation. He teaches regionally and nationally through workshops, massage schools, health facilities in-service training, conferences and symposia. He is someone we can all look upto as a role model for our careers. He is pictured on the frontpage. The membership nominates candidates for the Grant, Scholarshipand LMT of the Year awards. It was thattime spent in the medical library in those years that began mygreat appreciation for the value of research and how it greatlyenhanced my massage practice.I was working at an orthopedic clinic at this same time andsoon realized that my physician and physical therapist colleagueswere developing new and innovative treatment techniquesdirectly out of what they learned from recently publishedresearch studies. I recognized that reading research materialcould affect my massage practice in the same way andlead me to become a much better therapist and more able tohelp people in pain.In my early years there was very little research that was designedto specifically study the effects of massage therapy.Yet I found all kinds of valuable information in research studiesin the fields of physical medicine, orthopedics, biomechanics, sports medicine, psychology, and rehabilitation sciencethat greatly shaped, and in some cases radically changed, myviews of how to achieve the best results with clinical massage. There were numerous instances I can recall when I had beenteaching and practicing a certain approach or technique foryears and then came across an issue in research papers thatradically shook my perspective and forced me to re-think theway I was approaching a clinical problem. Incorporating thosenew concepts made me more successful in the clinic and had adirect effect on the success of my business and the respectgiven to me by my health care colleagues. As a massage teacher, reading research in all these fieldshelped me become a much better educator because I understoodso much more about what I was teaching in the class-(See Research… continued on page 8)April 10The Paschelke Methodwith Sharon Jakeways1:00pm to 4:00pm3 CE HoursCost: $35 Members $50 Non-MembersLocation: Anthem College, 4145 SW Watson Ave. #300,Beaverton, OregonSeeregistrationform onback coverThe Pachelke (puh-shell-key) method is a simple yet powerfulmethod of massage. AMTA Releases AnnualResearch on Massage TherapyEvanston, IL – The American Massage Therapy Association®(AMTA®) fourth annual summary research on the state of themassage therapy profession indicates both the impact of thepoor economy on massage in the past two years and how massagetherapists have adjusted their practices. A detailed reportfocused on the meaning of the research for massage therapyschools was released and discussed today at the AMTA 2011Massage Schools Summit in San Francisco.Based on three surveys conducted for AMTA in recentmonths, and data from government agencies, the researchshows the economy is the prime mover of massage therapy.Indications are that the public embraces the benefits of massageand will increase their usage as the economy recovers. The percentage of adult American consumers who received amassage between July 2009 and July 2010 went down by fourpercentage points, from 22 percent to 18 percent, compared tothe previous year. Consumers continue to strongly believe inthe efficacy of massage with over 80 percent of them seeingmassage as effective in reducing pain and as beneficial to theirhealth and wellness. Twenty-six percent of American adultsexpected to get a massage in the next twelve months.“We are delighted to provide our members, the profession andthe public with ongoing research about the state of massagetherapy in the U.S.,” says AMTA President Kathleen Miller-Read. “We now have several years of information that help usall see what is happening in consumer use of massage, howmassage therapists practice and how massage schools arefunctioning. This information is invaluable to all of us, to helpus know how to maintain our practices and how our massageschools can change to reflect the evolving needs of our profession.”During 2010, massage therapists worked an average of 19.4massage hours per week, down slightly from 20.4 hours perweek in 2009. Including tips, the average therapist earned $41per hour in 2010 vs. $44.90 in 2009.Although the last decade saw the number of practicing massagetherapists increase by close to 60 percent, this growthslowed in 2010 (1 percent increase over 2009). Most massagetherapists are female (87 percent), on average are 43 years old,had a different profession prior to becoming a therapist (74percent) and are sole practitioners (65 percent). Massagetherapists reported a continuing trend to work in multiple settings(an average of two settings) and practice several massagemodalities (an average of eight). The trend continued again in 2010 of a growth in health carejobs in the U.S. This also affected massage therapists as 25percent of them reported working in a health care environmentin 2010, compared to 10 percent of massage therapists workingin these environments in 2005.In 2010, the average amount of reported initial massage therapytraining was 660 hours, an increase of 36 hours over2009. Ninety-seven percent of massage therapists took continuingeducation classes in 2010. — Read AMTA’s 2011 Massage Therapy Industry Fact Sheet online at:AMTAmassage.org.Research… (Continued from page 7)room instead of just mimicking what other teachers had previouslytold me before. Reading research helped me develop aninquisitive mind and constantly search for an understanding ofwhy I did the things I did in the clinic room. I certainly wouldn’texpect everyone to have the same degree of excitementthat I feel about reading and studying research, but I think it isa very powerful engine that drives innovation and improvementof our profession and helps us all become much moreskilled practitioners.
