The 2006 version of the AMTA-OR Annual
Meeting was bigger and better than ever before.
Despite the usual unforeseen issues that arise at
any large event (one room was too cold, another
was too hot), the educational opportunities and
trade show were well received. Jon Hart taught to
a room stuffed to the ceiling with massage therapists;
Jessie Delozier provided a roomful of therapists
with plenty of information on insurance billing;
and others attended a panel discussion on
business success led by John Combe, Ted Adams,
and Diane Foster. MERT chair Leslie Giese also
provided four hours of training for those interested
in Medical Emergency Response massage
for disaster relief efforts.
The chapter also conducted elections for President,
2nd Vice President, and Treasurer. John
Combe was elected President, Jennifer Casey
was elected to the 2nd Vice President position,
and Brandi Walton was re-elected as Treasurer.
Delegates for the 2007 National Convention in
Cincinnati, Ohio are Mike Blackmore, Lisa Van
Alstine and Ted Adams, with Melinda Patterson,
Bethe Mack, Richard Ribar and Sara
Marvin as Alternates.
Community as Your Resource:
Vital for Our Profession
— by Ursula Popp, L.Ac., VCST, RC
Resources are the helpers that we draw upon, particularly in
times of stress. They are proven coping mechanisms that we
discover throughout our life. We use them consciously or unconsciously
to deal with demanding situations that pull us
away from our centered, confident sense of self. Resources are
support systems that allow us to expand our comfort zone by
venturing out into unknown territories. While our resources
change as our lives change, it is important to recognize what
resources we have, and how we can access them. And if we
don’t have them, it is vital that we develop them. In this article,
I would like to speak to one specific resource: community.
Bodyworkers and Massage Therapists do important and powerful
work. We receive our clients with open ears and open
hearts. We listen to their bodies, their words, and hear their
pain and discomfort. We use all our talents and skills and the
power of our undivided presence to ease their pain, to hold a
space in which they find a way back to health, and to themselves.
This is demanding, professionally and personally. Yet,
we often work alone in our private practices, with no one to
talk to about our work. We often believe that we can’t share
the stresses we experience through our work with clients because
of confidentiality reasons. We often refrain from talking
about our professional live with anyone, refrain from sharing
the insecurities we feel about our abilities or the worries we
have around the fluctuation of our client loads and business
income. We do not communicate our deep concerns around
clients and our inability to fulfill their demands of being made
better. Yet, these issues have proven to be the main sources of
the burnout commonly experienced amongst massage therapists
and other health care professionals. I propose that in order
to stay healthy, energetic and lively in this profession, we
need community.
We need a community of people that work in a similar profession
and face similar problems. We need to talk to each other
regularly. We need to express our fears and loneliness in our
practices. We need to talk about the one client that drives us
crazy, because she presses every single button we have, the
one that we don’t want to ever see ever again, and that still
keeps coming religiously every single week. We need to talk
about this other client that we want so desperately to get better,
and that we can’t seem to help. This same community that
is willing to share their and our professional despair, also
needs to help us remember who we truly are: caring, compassionate,
warmhearted healers. It proves to be of great value to
have access to peers that affirm us, support us and believe in
us as healers. Yes, it is wonderful when our clients get better,
when they praise us for our skills, but we cannot sustain our
self worth through that. If we relied on their praises, we would
be crushed when they did not appreciate us. We need other
professionals for maintaining our sense of professional self
worth and helping us to keep doing what we are doing. We
need this community when we want to grow, expand and explore
new territory, professionally and personally. We need a
community that believes in us, that helps us figure out exactly
what we are seeking in our lives, and where we are heading,
that cheers us on and helps us celebrate when we have accomplished
something challenging. Sometimes we need to draw
on the skills of more experienced professionals. The work
with these professionals with whom we discuss any aspect of
our professional life is called supervision, and is not therapy.
We also need peers for mutual support.
I invite you to take inventory for yourself: what community do
you have available? Who can you call or talk to when things
are hard in your practice? Who helps you sustain your identity
as a healer? And who cheers you on when you explore new,
challenging areas? Once you’ve completed your inventory,
make at least two phone calls. Either thank the people for their
valuable presence in your life, thereby reinforcing the connection
you have. Tell them that you will continue to support
them, too. Or, initiate such a connection with a peer or supportive
professional. Do this for yourself, do it for the profession,
and do it for the people you call. Do it for your clients who
will benefit from the strength you gain by having a supported
life.
— Editor’s Note: Remember, AMTA is YOUR community!
Annual Meeting Summary…
(Continued from front page)
Other News from the Annual Meeting: The 2006 budget
was passed, and our new Lobbyist Cindy Robert spoke to the
membership. Certificates of Appreciation were presented to
Brandi Walton, Nathan Nordstrom, Glenath Moyle and
Ted Adams, who spent the past year volunteering on committees
and projects. John Combe was given the LMT of the
Year award for his continued efforts as AMTA-OR Membership
Chair, as well as serving as 2nd Vice President and working
continuously for the benefit of AMTA at the chapter and
national levels.
Attendance at this year's event was up tremendously over the
past few years. Fifty-six professional members, along with
student and associate members, and many non-member therapists
who attended, made the event the largest yet. Close to
120 attendees and 9 vendors made this a great event for learning
and networking. The chapter board thanks all of the vendors
and companies who provided items to the raffle. We look
forward to another great annual meeting in 2007 at the
Crowne Plaza in Lake Oswego.
MERT Oregon Chapter Rep
A MERT training was held at the AMTA-OR Annual Meeting
this year and we now have seven new people interested in rebuilding
our team in earnest. Additionally, we have a training
scheduled for May 21 in the Tillamook area to get a group
started there.
Two or three teams along the I-5 corridor, one to two teams in
the eastern area, and one to two teams in the mid and southern
coast are our goals. If you are interested in becoming part
of the Massage Emergency Response Team, please email me
at bodybunch@msn.com, or call me at 503/736-0144. I would
like to come and conduct a training in your area.
The training is really a way for us to all start out on the same
foot, so no matter what your background, when we come together
to work as a team we know what is expected of us. It
has taken a few years to get really started again, but it is happening
and we are ready to roll.
Email & Phone Scams
Dear AMTA Member,
The AMTA National Office has received several calls from
members about a telephone solicitation they received for a
study on sneezing or “sneezing to lose weight.” We want all
members to know that AMTA is not involved with any such
research and that we believe someone is fraudulently using
AMTA’s name for illegal purposes.
Callers have stated that they are affiliated with AMTA and
that they want to involve AMTA members in their study.
They claim massage therapists will be paid for their participation
and for the participation of their clients. Some AMTA
members were told that AMTA would be sending them a
check. None of this is true.
It is unclear how the callers are getting the names and telephone
numbers of members. It does not appear to be through
AMTA’s Find a Massage Therapist national locator service,
as not all of the members who have been called are listed in
the service.
AMTA is continuing its investigation of these phone calls and
will take legal action if we can find who is doing it. If you
receive one of these telephone calls, please do not make any
commitments and do not provide any personal information
(such as your social security number).
Unfortunately, there are many unscrupulous people attempting
to find ways to prey on others. We encourage you to always
be cautious in responding to such unsolicited phone calls and
in responding to unsolicited emails.
Touch—Countertouch Guidelines
As massage therapists, we are skilled in communicating through
our hands. As editor, I know that many of our members are also
skilled in communicating through words. You may respond to
any article in this newsletter (please specify the article by title,
author and issue printed), or you may discuss new topics of your
own. Letters should be a maximum of 200 words. Letters may
be edited for length and content. Please include your name,
address, and telephone number for verification purposes, but we
will print only your name and city at the bottom of your letter.
