P residential Notes by Nathan Nordstrom, LMT #7700 AMTA-OR President I would like to say “Thank You” for the opportunity to serve as your new AMTA-OR President for the next two years. I am very excited to be involved in a growing and dynamic Chapter. With over 1150 members, we—the AMTA-OR Board of Directors—need more members actively lending a hand. I would like to invite any and all of you to Oregon’s 2006 Chapter Volunteer Orientation Program (CVOP) Saturday, April 8, from noon to 3 p.m. More information is included elsewhere in this newsletter. At CVOP we’ll be getting members plugged into committees they would like to help on. I also want to say that the 2006 Annual Meeting, held Saturday, February 25, boasted the LARGEST attendance for an Annual Meeting to date. Thank you, Mike Blackmore, for being the Chair of this event, and to all the members who helped out. I would like to welcome the other newly elected officers: Jennifer Casey, 2nd Vice President; and Brandi Walton, Treasurer. Welcome also to Katie Martin as AMTA-OR’s new Membership Chair. After a very fun and full weekend at the Board Retreat, March 10-12, I can say that this board seems dedicated to serving its members! AMTA Oregon News – 2 New Officers Introduced Following elections on February 25, 2006 John Combe, LMT, NCTMB #7492 AMTA-OR President AMTA House of Delegates Operations Committee I would like to introduce myself as your new AMTA-OR President. The last two years have been full of fun and challenges as AMTA-OR 2nd Vice President. I have served as Membership Chair for the last four years and have had a great time getting to talk with all of the members. Serving as a Delegate for the last two years, I was elected to the sixmember House of Delegates Operations Committee. I have been a Professional Member the last seven years, in which a lot has change in the profession at both State and National levels. I am also involved with the Oregon Board of Massage Therapists (OBMT), serving on two committees and helping with the exam process. I am the founder of Combe’s Wellness Center. I have specialized in clinical massage the last seven years, working with Naturopathic, Chiropractic and Medical doctors. In 2004, I cofounded the Advanced Sports Therapy Institute. Most recently I was named 2005 Oregon LMT of the Year. In my spare time I am a very active runner and cyclist. I also enjoy spending time with all of my nieces and nephews. I have been a massage therapist for over 20 years and specialize in medical and rehabilitative massage in my private practice in Lake Oswego, Oregon. I have taught at all three of the major massage schools in the greater Portland area over the past seven years, from Salem to Portland to Vancouver. I presently teach Deep Tissue and Therapeutic Massage at the Oregon School of Massage. I hold a degree as a naturopathic doctor as well as a master's degree in psychology. I was a member of the National College of Naturopathic Medicine Board of Trustees for three years, chairing several committees during that time. I am a member of the Lake Oswego Chamber of Commerce. AMTA Oregon News – 3 Community as Your Resource: Vital for Our Profession — by Ursula Popp, L.Ac., VCST, RC Resources are the helpers that we draw upon, particularly in times of stress. They are proven coping mechanisms that we discover throughout our life. We use them consciously or unconsciously to deal with demanding situations that pull us away from our centered, confident sense of self. Resources are support systems that allow us to expand our comfort zone by venturing out into unknown territories. While our resources change as our lives change, it is important to recognize what resources we have, and how we can access them. And if we don’t have them, it is vital that we develop them. In this article, I would like to speak to one specific resource: community. Bodyworkers and Massage Therapists do important and powerful work. We receive our clients with open ears and open hearts. We listen to their bodies, their words, and hear their pain and discomfort. We use all our talents and skills and the power of our undivided presence to ease their pain, to hold a space in which they find a way back to health, and to themselves. This is demanding, professionally and personally. Yet, we often work alone in our private practices, with no one to talk to about our work. We often believe that we can’t share the stresses we experience through our work with clients because of confidentiality reasons. We often refrain from talking about our professional live with anyone, refrain from sharing the insecurities we feel about our abilities or the worries we have around the fluctuation of our client loads and business income. We do not communicate our deep concerns around clients and our inability to fulfill their demands of being made better. Yet, these issues have proven to be the main sources of the burnout commonly experienced amongst massage therapists and other health care professionals. I propose that in order to stay healthy, energetic and lively in this profession, we need community. We need a community of people that work in a similar profession and face similar problems. We need to talk to each other regularly. We need to express our fears and loneliness in our practices. We need to talk about the one client that drives us crazy, because she presses every single button we have, the one that we don’t want to ever see ever again, and that still keeps coming religiously every single week. We need to talk about this other client that we want so desperately to get better, and that we can’t seem to help. This same community that is willing to share their and our professional despair, also needs to help us remember who we truly are: caring, compassionate, warmhearted healers. It proves to be of great value to have access to peers that affirm us, support us and believe in us as healers. Yes, it is wonderful when our clients get better, when they praise us for our skills, but we cannot sustain our self worth through that. If we relied on their praises, we would be crushed when they did not appreciate us. We need other professionals for maintaining our sense of professional self worth and helping us to keep doing what we are doing. We need this community when we want to grow, expand and explore new territory, professionally and personally. We need a community that believes in us, that helps us figure out exactly what we are seeking in our lives, and where we are heading, that cheers us on and helps us celebrate when we have accomplished something challenging. Sometimes we need to draw on the skills of more experienced professionals. The work with these professionals with whom we discuss any aspect of our professional life is called supervision, and is not therapy. We also need peers for mutual support. I invite you to take inventory for yourself: what community do you have available? Who can you call or talk to when things are hard in your practice? Who helps you sustain your identity as a healer? And who cheers you on when you explore new, challenging areas? Once you’ve completed your inventory, make at least two phone calls. Either thank the people for their valuable presence in your life, thereby reinforcing the connection you have. Tell them that you will continue to support them, too. Or, initiate such a connection with a peer or supportive professional. Do this for yourself, do it for the profession, and do it for the people you call. Do it for your clients who will benefit from the strength you gain by having a supported life. — Editor’s Note: Remember, AMTA is YOUR community!
