is similar to identity theft. <strong>The</strong>y attach programs to email lists<br />

and to computers, which they then use to steal information.<br />

<strong>The</strong>re is no way for you or <strong>AMTA</strong> to know where these people<br />

found your email address. It could have been from anywhere.<br />

<strong>AMTA</strong> encourages you to be careful opening emails from<br />

email addresses you don’t recognize. You can be sure that<br />

<strong>AMTA</strong> will not give your email address to anyone.<br />

One email in particular has been sent to many massage therapists<br />

with the subject line “<strong>American</strong> <strong>Massage</strong> <strong>The</strong>rapy Association<br />

Announcement: Investment Opportunity Once In A<br />

Lifetime,” asking for people to invest in Iraq. <strong>AMTA</strong> has filed<br />

a complaint through the Federal Trade Commission. If you<br />

have received these emails, we encourage you to file a complaint<br />

at http://www.ftc.gov/ftc/consumer.htm. Just click on<br />

“File a Complaint” to fill out the form, or forward the email<br />

you received to spam@uce.gov.<br />

the FTC web site for helpful info on internet fraud/scams, or<br />

go to http://www.ftc.gov/spam/ for more specific spam info.<br />

Helpful Email Tip: When you are skeptical about the<br />

contents <strong>of</strong> an email, whether it be an announcement on<br />

the latest <strong>of</strong>fer from Micros<strong>of</strong>t, a request to send a card to<br />

some individual fighting cancer, a computer virus warning,<br />

or even a petition, check it out first before responding.<br />

<strong>AMTA</strong>-<strong>OR</strong> Board Retreat 2006<br />

<strong>The</strong> 2006-07 <strong>AMTA</strong>-<strong>OR</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Directors visited the Mt.<br />

Hood area March 10-12, to meet, plan and discuss what they<br />

hope to accomplish during this next year. New <strong>Chapter</strong> President<br />

John Combe led the gathering. Over the weekend, committee<br />

liaisons and chairs were assigned, including Education,<br />

Government Relations, Membership, <strong>Web</strong>site, <strong>News</strong>letter,<br />

MERT, Budget, and others.<br />

New to the board this year is Dr. Jennifer Casey, as 2nd Vice<br />

President. Re-elected as Treasurer is Brandi Walton. Rounding<br />

out the board are 1st Vice President Mike Blackmore, 3rd<br />

Vice President Leslie<br />

Giese, and Secretary<br />

Michael Dukart. New as<br />

Membership Chair is<br />

Katie Martin.<br />

Time was spent on<br />

planning for the 2006<br />

<strong>AMTA</strong> National Convention<br />

in Atlanta,<br />

Georgia, and the 2007<br />

<strong>AMTA</strong>-<strong>OR</strong> Annual Meeting next February, as well as a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> committee work. In 2005 the board held its retreat at the<br />

same location as this year. Last year they had temps in the<br />

70s, this year they had snow all weekend. <br />
