Message
Kerygma (KER-ig-ma)
Proclamation; being prophetic advocates, counter-cultural,
challenging and being challenged out of our comfort zones
Dear Parishioners, Visitors and Special Guests,
The fourth Sunday of Lent is also known as Laetare Sunday. Laetare means "Rejoice" in Latin. Today marks the midpoint
of the Lenten season and may be time when we need to be encouraged to continue on our faithful course of
penance that one dedicates during the Lenten season. The first Beatitude says: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs
is the kingdom of heaven.”
I raise my eyes toward the mountains. From where will my help come? God will not allow your foot to slip;
your guardian does not sleep.
-Psalm 121
Rejoice with Jerusalem and be glad because of her, all you who love her; Exult, exult with her, all you who were
mourning over her!
As a mother comforts her son, so will I comfort you; in Jerusalem you shall find your comfort.
-Isaiah 66:10, 13
We might think of the item or action we gave up for Lent as a chore but if we think this way it becomes difficult. If we
look at the sacrifices as putting aside something that keeps us from having a relationship with God then we might be
able to enjoy our sacrifice as we see our relationship with God grow.
We give up watching TV, drinking soda, or eating fast food. What have we done with that extra time? Maybe created a
study group with classmates that are struggling in school, helped out at the local fields where baseball and softball are
in full swing or used your fast food money to help with the Thomas House Temporary Shelter’s “wish list.” We can wait
idly and hope to find ourselves in the same place forty days later. Or, we can take this time not to focus on the things
we put aside and continue to move forward and grow.
“Rejoice, O Jerusalem!”
In Christ,
LOAVES & FISHES SOUP KITCHEN
Thank you so much for your very, very generous response
to our request last month for rice and beans for
our needy families! Prior to His death and resurrection,
Jesus modeled loving service for us when He got down
on his hands and knees and washed the dirty feet of His
followers. We do the same today at the soup kitchen
when we care for the weary feet of those we serve by
handing out new socks for Easter. We would be most
grateful for your kind donation of new men’s, women’s
and children’s socks. Please bring your gift to the parish
office throughout March. Lenten Blessings!
SAINT JUSTIN MARTYR OUTREACH
consider joining us in Anaheim on Sunday, March 29 th to
to attend & serve, we would still be grateful for your
food donation! This could be an already cooked/
prepared side or main dish, or fresh fruit, salad fixings,
etc. You may bring it with you, or drop it in the parish
office on Sunday, March 29, (before 1:00 pm). For more
PARISH LIBRARY
Consider the very popular novel, “The Shack” by William
P. Young and explore the timeless question, “Where is
God in a world so filled with unspeakable pain?” This
compelling and provocative story draws you into an
emotional, faith-filled journey.
LAETARE SUNDY
Laetare means “rejoice” and comes from the first word
of today’s entrance antiphon, “Rejoice, Jerusalem. Be
glad for her, you who love her; rejoice with her, you who
mourned for her, and you will find contentment at her
consoling breasts.” Like Gaudete Sunday in Advent,
Laetare Sunday in Lent reminds us not to forget to rejoice—at
this time to joyfully anticipate the celebration
of Easter. Thus the priest wears rose-colored vestments
to symbolize joy in the midst of Lent.
ATTENTION EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS
Food for the Journey—an opportunity to gather Eucharistic
Ministers for formation and fellowship. Fr. Dan will
present an historical perspective of the Eucharist and
help us understand the role we play in the liturgy. His
theological insights will provide information and appreciation
for what it means to serve as a Eucharistic Minister.
Lunch will be served. All EM’s and EM’s to the sick
are invited to attend. Session One will be held on Saturday,
April 4, 2009 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. in the
A Preparation for Lenten Reconciliation
A New Look at an Old Reality
Fr. Chris Smith, Vicar for Priests of the Diocese of Orange,
will discuss last year’s Vatican alert regarding
what the media called “new sins.” The Vatican has
restated an old challenge in a new way: repentance from
participating in collective patterns of broken relationship,
such as damage to the earth and exploitation of the poor.
How can we move beyond a narrow view of personal sin
and take responsibility for our part in societal patterns of
sin? How can we examine our consciences in a new
way? How do we change our hearts
as citizens of a country and members
of a community whose actions
have a global impact?
Wednesday, March 25, 2009
7:00 p.m. Adult Center
As Fr. Chris addresses these questions, Fr. Dan will
guide a panel of responders and prepare us,
in prayer, for our parish celebrations of the
sacrament of reconciliation.

FOURTH WEEK OF LENT
Let us remember in prayer that we are called to be
good stewards of our earth. By protecting the environment
in which we live, we respect the goodness
of nature, a gift God has given. May our fasting keep
us mindful of those who have no clean water to grow
crops or to nourish their families. May our almsgiving
assist Catholic Relief Services as we learn about
agriculture programs in Honduras.
Exploring the Meaning of Social Sin--a New Look at an Old Reality
Wednesday, March 25, 7:00 p.m. in Adult Center
Fr. Chris Smith will discuss the meaning of the
recent Vatican Statement focusing our attention on
social sins. Fr. Dan Lackie will then guide a discussion
of expert responders and will lead us in a brief
liturgical ceremony that will help prepare us for the
parish’s penitential services.
WALK OUT OF POVERTY
Packets are available after Mass
for the Walk Out of Poverty. Stop
at the table to learn about the Walk
and how you, your family and friends can empower
local people in economically poor countries to lift
themselves out of poverty permanently.
The Walk around Mile Square Park begins at Holy
Spirit Church on Saturday, April 4, at 7:30 a.m.
EARTH HOUR 8:30-9:30 P.M., MARCH 28, 2009
Enjoy dark skies locally when cities across the
world turn off lights for one hour in a collective
action to reduce energy consumption and
protect the environment. Observe Earth Hour
in your home by turning off all lights for one
hour and be part of a worldwide movement to
reduce energy and support natural skies. Learn
more about Earth Hour at: www.earthhour.org.
This action could be a Lenten practice. Make
it a prayerful hour in darkness (perhaps with
family or friends) and meditate and/or discuss
how some people have to live without electricity
or in blindness. You could also consider what
other actions you might take to reduce energy
consumption in an effort to care for our earth.
Please share your experience with others by
sending an email to: drustvold@socal.rr.com.

RCIA NEWS
On March 29, the 5th Sunday of
Lent, our elect will experience the
3rd of three Scrutinies at the 10:30
a.m. Mass. The Scrutinies, celebrated
in our midst, indicate that
the Elect are choosing to rid themselves
of, and be healed of, anything that is weak, defective
or sinful. Acknowledging their weakness, they
are then called to strengthen all that is upright, strong
WOMEN CREATING COMMUNITY
Journaling is a very simple process that requires only a
journal, writing utensil and a heart and mind ready to
reflect. Wendy Hinman, journalist for Carlsbad
Magazine, will present a talk called “The Art of Prayer
through Journaling” on Wednesday, April 1, at 9:00 a.m.
By getting your thoughts out of your head and down on
paper, you gain insights you’d otherwise never see.
There are many benefits to journaling such as reducing
the scatter in your life; dignifying all events and revealing
your inner voice. Don’t miss out! We are still meeting at
Holy Spirit Church in Fountain Valley. Bring a friend!
Mark your calendars for May 13, when our speaker will
be Dr. Julie Shuck.
ELIZABETH MINISTRY
The ministry was founded to help the
church truly celebrate the gift of each child
conceived and born, and fully mourn each
miscarriage, abortion, stillbirth and infant
or child death. Elizabeth Ministers treasure
the gift of fertility, support those suffering infertility
problems, encourage those in the adoptive process and
assists families experiencing an infant or child crisis or
special need. If you are interested in this ministry or just
need someone to talk to that has been through similar
experiences, please call Brenda Kelly at (714) 962-3333.
