PRINCIPAL’S NEWSLETTER MAY 30, 2011
Dear Parents,
This Saturday, June 4, the Sts. Simon & Jude School Class of 2011 will receive their
diplomas at a special graduation liturgy beginning at 9:00 A.M. As we bid these students a fond
farewell, we also wish them well as they begin their journey into high school. We are grateful for
the many contributions they have made to this faith community—for their enthusiasm and love
of life; for reminding us how to see things through youthful eyes; and for constantly renewing our
faith and hope for the future. We pray that they may find serenity in a world they may not always
understand; that they may discover enough goodness in others to believe in a world of peace;
that they see their future as one filled with promise and possibility; and that the love and light of
Christ shine through them always!
Co-Valedictorian – Veronica Neach
Co-Valedictorian – Connor Saeman
Congratulations Class of 2011!
STUDENT COUNCIL COMMISSIONING CEREMONY
I would like to take this opportunity to commend all of the students who campaigned for
membership on our Student Council next year. All of the students did a wonderful job with their
posters and speeches, and we will continue to rely upon each one of them to serve as role
models for the rest of the student body. Congratulations to the following students who were
elected by their peers to serve as Commissioners during the 2011-2012 school year.
Commissioner General – Grant Mooney
Asst. Commissioner General – Lauren Markwith
Commissioner of Religious Affairs – Miranda Hughes
Commissioner of Finance – Taylor Briggs
Commissioner of Communications – Jacob Rojek
Commissioner of School Spirit – Alison Michalak
in church. Immediately following the installation, we will be bidding farewell to the Class of 2011,
and recognizing some of our 8 th grade students for their tenure at Sts. Simon & Jude School, as
well as their achievements as CJSF members. Parents are most welcome to join us for this
special event.
Council: Albert Abaoag, Laura DiCrisi, Eric Pellkofer, Philip Tanghal and Cheryl Wills.
the school year and keep them through the summer session.
your children’s used books, videos and DVDs to the library beginning Thursday, June 2.
We will be selling books for 50 cents each at our book sale during the last week of
school. This is a great way to get some STAR books for summer reading.
• Please search your cars and bookshelves at home for school library books. All books
must be returned to the library by Friday, June 3 rd . (All 8 th grade student library
books must be turned in, or lost books paid for, before they can receive their diploma.)
Students with summer library passes may check out books or renew the ones they have
during the last week of school.
• HONOR’S READER (Grades 5 and up) In an effort to encourage students to “read
widely” we have established a category called “Honor’s Reader.” There is a list of “great
books/authors” everyone should read before they go to high school, and students can
select and read books from this list. Each student is responsible for updating his or her
own personal list which we keep in a notebook at the library desk. When they have
earned 100 points, they will have achieved honors. This is cumulative over their years as
a Star Reader. This is only for students in 5th grade and above. Ideally, they will
have earned Honor’s status at least once by the time they graduate. This is something
they will earn in addition to their certificate level (e.g. classic/honors 1; or star/honors1).
For a full explanation of the star reading program please check our SSJ website at
http://www.ssj.org/school/library/Our_STAR_Reading_Prog.htm.
Fr. Christian Diamond Jubilee
Celebrating 60 Years as a Franciscan Priest!
Sts. Simon & Jude Church will celebrate Fr. Christian’s 60 th Anniversary of his Ordination on
June 3, 4 and 5, 2011. Sts. Simon & Jude has been home to Fr. Christian for the last 20 years,
and we want his Diamond Jubilee to be reflective of his service and the community spirit he has
helped create here. The Diamond Jubilee celebration will consist of the following activities:
• A Friday night reception from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. at the friars’ homes. All parishioners will
have the opportunity to purchase tickets to the reception. 350 tickets at $100 each will
be sold for the Friday night reception, with the money collected going to the new fund.
Tickets can be purchased in the Parish Office.
• Prayers of thanksgiving will be offered for Fr. Christian at all weekend Masses, with Fr.
Christian celebrating the 10:30 a.m. Mass on Sunday, June 5. A second collection will
be taken during all Masses that weekend, with donations in Fr. Christian’s honor given to
the new fund.
• Finally, a Sunday morning reception, with coffee and cake, will be held in Fr. Christian’s
honor after the 10:30 a.m. Mass in the Hospitality Area.
Fr. Christian has asked that any monies collected during the celebrations be given to the new
Sts. Simon & Jude Facilities Renovation Fund. This new fund will be used to provide for the
near and long term facility needs of the parish, school, hall and residences. We are grateful to
Fr. Christian for allowing us to kick off this new fund during his Jubilee, and we hope that you
will be able to join us for this special celebration.
In faith, pride and spirit,
