Saturday 9th October 10am–4pm Ilkley Tennis Club The Excitement of South Asian Literature – Day School (in English) Held in collaboration with Leeds Metropolitan University and the University of Leeds, this exciting event offers you the opportunity to find out more about the extraordinarily rich range of South Asian writing in English, with leading scholars in the field including Dr Claire Chambers, Dr Caroline Herbert, Dr Ananya Jahanara Kabir and Professor John McLeod. Informal, lively interactive sessions – from discussion on key themes to creative writing exercises and ‘for and against’ debates on particular topics and issues in South Asian writing, inspired by this year’s guests at the Festival. Saturday 9th October 11am–4pm across Ilkley Words on the Streets Meet brand new poetry voices, all under 25, busking across Ilkley before a performance of their work this evening. Enjoy a vibrant, eclectic mix of verse on the streets and in the courtyard of the Manor House Museum from Oli Hazzard, Jonathan Parkin, Cara Brennan, Ashna Sarkar and Andrew McMillan. Saturday 9th October 11am–1pm St Margaret’s Hall Writing for Teenagers with Bernardine Evaristo Author and poet Bernardine Evaristo leads this practical and inspiring creative writing workshop, exploring how to capture a teenage fictional voice for a teenage market using her Quick Reads novella Hello Mum as a model. £12/8 Adults and young people 16+. Saturday 9th October 11am–1pm Manor House Character and Voice in Short Story Jane Rogers Workshop Jane Rogers, OCA Course Leader for Creative Writing and Professor of Creative Writing at the University of Sheffield, leads a workshop on character and voice in the short story. She’ll look at examples of effective characterisation from other writers, and explore ways into creating character through a range of exercises. Come prepared to write! £12/8 For all levels. Participants will work in groups to investigate actual evidence which they will use to create a plausible character and voice. Expect to do some detective work that will feed into your own writing. Saturday 9th October 2pm Kings Hall The Number Mysteries: Professor Marcus du Sautoy Marcus du Sautoy – footballer, amateur musician – Professor of Mathematics at Oxford and Simonyi Professor for the Public Understanding of Science, is passionate about popularising mathematics. Join him and set your prejudice aside – maths never used to be this much fun! Discover maths at the heart of everyday life with Wayne Rooney solving quadratic equations as he puts the ball in the back of the net. £8/5 An event for adults and young people from 10/11 upwards. 81. Saturday 9th October 2pm Ilkley Playhouse Wildman Map of a Nation: Rachel Hewitt Rachel Hewitt, Research Fellow at Queen Mary and Westfield College, University of London, tells the story of the creation of the Ordnance Survey map from its inception in 1791, through political revolutions and rebellions, to the vast digital database of the present day. An untold adventure, featuring intrepid individuals lugging brass theodolites up mountains to create the first accurate, affordable map of the British Isles. £5/3 82. Saturday 9th October 2pm All Saints Parish Church Poems of Praise Festival Poet in Residence Antony Dunn, aided by Yorkshire poet Nigel Forde, presents a reading of poems ancient and modern, from John Donne to Michael Symmons Roberts, by way of George Herbert, Gerard Manley Hopkins and quite a few surprises … FREE Professor Marcus du Sautoy 83. Saturday 9th October 2.30pm St Margaret’s Hall A Winter on the Nile: Tim Butcher and Anthony Sattin Conversations about Empires In the winter of 1849, Florence Nightingale was just 29 – and deeply unhappy. Anthony Sattin, inveterate Egyptian traveller, highly regarded journalist, broadcaster and travel writer (Sunday Times, Daily Telegraph, Independent and The Guardian) discusses the impact of journeys that altered their lives, with fellow journalist, former Daily Telegraph correspondent and bestselling author, Africa expert, Tim Butcher.
