Sunday 10th October 2–4pm begins and ends at Manor House All Ages Poetry Workshop: The Song of the River Join Poet in Residence, Antony Dunn, in an al fresco writing treat for the whole family. After a short session in the Manor House, participants will take a walk along the River Wharfe with time to try their hand at a writing exercise in a choice spot. Back together, the group will create a collaborative poem which will be added to the ‘Ilkley Poetry Map’. (See website) £3 adults £1 children For adults and children 10+ (no younger!) Sunday 10th October 2pm Kings Hall Peter Hain on Nelson Mandela The former Labour Minister introduces his new biography of Nelson Mandela which chronicles the extraordinary journey of the ANC revolutionary who became the President able to heal a divided nation. Exiled from his native South Africa, Peter Hain first rose to prominence as a leading anti-apartheid campaigner and chair of the Stop The Tour campaigns which disrupted tours by the South African rugby and cricket teams in 1969/70. £9/7 Peter Hain with Nelson Mandela 99. Sunday 10th October 3pm St Margaret’s Hall Barbara Trapido: In Conversation Festival favourite Barbara Trapido is the author of seven critically praised novels. She demonstrates a relish for almost Shakespearean comic plots, in her rich mix of chance encounters, separations and erotic misunderstandings. Today, in conversation with James Nash, she discusses her latest novel, Sex and Stravinsky, where comedy and sadness sit side by side as characters’ lives are moulded by a series of chance meetings across continents and generations. £6/4 This event begins with the results of the 2010 Festival Short Story Competition. Vitali Vitaliev, Ukranian-born cultural commentator and journalist rose to prominence as ‘Clive James’ man in Moscow’. An eminent investigative journalist in the old Soviet Union, KGB attention forced him to defect. Now the author of cult classics (Dreams on Hitler’s Couch), Daily Telegraph columnist and TV and radio regular, Vitaliev shares his tremendously wry take on the human species and unique reflections on a literary life. £5/3 26

Highly experienced political journalists, the Guardian’s Polly Toynbee and David Walker, Social Affairs Editor for the Guardian, former lead writer for the Times and presenter of BBC Radio 4’s Analysis, investigate Labour’s longest term in office, pitting election promises alongside government policy. Why did social mobility slow down on Labour’s watch? Did Labour policies actually worsen the recession? From the gleeful consumerism of the boom times to the misery of the economic bust, they assess the era of Blair and Brown and ask what have Labour done? Sunday 10th October 4pm Ilkley Playhouse Wildman The Golden Age of Arabic Science: Jim al-Khalili For over 700 years the international language of science was Arabic. From calculating the diameter of the earth to the origins of algebra and chemistry, Jim al-Khalili, theoretical physicist, author, broadcaster and Professor of Physics at the University of Surrey, unravels the golden age of Arabic science centred on 9th century Baghdad. Sunday 10th October 6pm Craiglands Danger Close: Colonel Stuart Tootal In Conversation The former Commander of 3 Para is the first senior officer to tell us the harsh truth about the war in Afghanistan. A soldier, academic, and expert in international relations he resigned from the army in protest at the Government’s treatment of wounded troops. Today he discusses the reality of the unforgiving conflict, described in his Sunday Times best seller Danger Close, with BBC foreign correspondent, Jill McGivering. £6/4 108. Sunday 10th October 7.30pm Craiglands Lenin Ate my Homework: Alexei Sayle Alexei Sayle always knew his parents were different. They ate salad and read the Soviet Weekly. A central figure on the 1980s alternative comedy circuit, his career has included stand-up, sitcoms, films, a Top 20 single, and more recently, critically acclaimed short stories and novels. Enjoy his achingly funny portrait of an unconventional 1960s family. £7/5 109. Sunday 10th October 7.30pm Kings Hall Carol Ann Duffy and John Sampson ‘In the world of poetry, Carol Ann Duffy is a superstar.’ The Guardian. Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy in performance with acclaimed Edinburgh-based musician, composer and actor, John Sampson. Winner of the Whitbread, Forward and TS Eliot poetry prizes, Duffy reads from some of her latest as yet unpublished work and The World’s Wife, accessible humorous poems which ‘vibrate with intense colloquialisms, physicality, energy, freshness and cheek’.
