Destination
Germany
Great cuisine, relaxing in mother nature,
festivals and celebrations, vacation, design
and fashion, inspiring architecture: Germany
has plenty of all to offer – and is far
removed from all the clichés that might still
abound about lederhosen and sauerkraut.
but the numerous visitors from abroad who
are increasingly discovering that Germany is
an interesting vacation destination already
know this. not just because of the wealth
of German cultural and historical sights, but
also because of the wide-ranging regional
cuisine and the changing landscapes. in
fact, although the Germans are the undisputed
world champions when it comes to
foreign travel, they still prefer to holiday
between the north sea and the alps.
Germany is becoming increasingly popular
as a travel destination: In 2010 the German
Federal Statistical Office recorded 60.3 million
overnights by foreign guests from the
North Sea to the Alps. Despite the economic
crisis Germany succeeded in maintaining its
high level of tourism and in comparison with
other countries was even able to increase
its share of the international market. Berlin,
Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne
are the most popular cities with international
visitors. Business travelers in particular value
Germany as a destination. With an 11 percent
market share of all international business
trips Germany is the market leader in
business tourism worldwide.
In Berlin, the number of overnights has
been increasing for years: In 2010 it rose by
more than one million to around 20.8 million.
Most visitors to Germany come from other
European countries, the USA and Asia. With
regard to individual states, Bavaria, North
Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg
are the preferred destinations.
In addition to historical sights, top-quality
concert series, art exhibitions, theater performances
as well as major international sports
events, street festivals and atmospheric
Christmas markets are just a few of the attractions
that bring the visitors flocking. The
Germans love to celebrate, and never miss an
opportunity to do so. Many festivals such as
Munich’s renowned Oktoberfest, the Carnival
of the Cultures in Berlin, Fastnacht in Mainz
and Carnival in Cologne have long become an
international synonym for high spirits and a
cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Whereas most foreign visitors are drawn to
the big cities, Germans themselves tend to
visit smaller places and rural regions in their
home country: The coasts of the North and
Baltic Seas, the Black Forest and Lake Constance
are the most popular vacation destinations.
Germany boasts no less than 14
national parks, 101 nature parks and 15 biosphere
reserves. However, for active holiday
makers too coastlines, lakes, as well as low
and high mountain ranges are all becoming
increasingly important. There are all sorts of
opportunities available: There are as many as
nine European long distance trails stretching
for 9,700 kilometers throughout the
country and a total of 190,000 kilometers of
signposted walks. And for cyclists there are
50,000 kilometers of track on which to discover
the country.
wellness Holidays
Feel-good Germany: Wellness and health
have for years been the rage among tourists.
Many German holidaymakers put a relaxation
and wellness vacation at the top of their list.
And an increasing number of foreign guests
choose a relaxing holiday in one of the 330
recognized German spa towns and thermal
springs. Be it classical massage or Qigong,
Chinese energy motion therapy, there are
any number of hotels up and down the country
specialized in offering wellness holidays.
Especially popular are the long-standing
sea spa towns along the Baltic coast, such
as Heiligen damm, the “white town on the
coast” and the oldest and perhaps most refined
German sea spa town, with a famous,
award-winning grand hotel.
South Germany scores highest with a
wholesome climate, thermal springs, and “hay
baths”: Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg
and Bavaria’s Allgäu region are the preferred
wellness destinations. However, in Mecklenburg-Western
Pomerania in the north and
Hesse in central Germany there are a particularly
large number of spas.
Magic Cities:
The Eleven Stars
of Germany
Every year, Germany‘s biggest and most
popular cities attract millions of visitors from
all over the world. Everyone from business
travellers and cultural aficionados to shopaholics
and party animals will find exactly what
they‘re looking for.
berlin
The events of the past have left their mark
on the cityscape - and the city is still changing
today. „Berlin is always in the process of
becoming“, remarked historian Karl Scheffler,
and this is one of the traits that makes it one
of Europe‘s most vibrant, exciting and colourful
capitals. Berlin has a vibe all of its own,
and wherever you go, you can experience the
pulsating life on the boulevards, in the art
galleries, at the flea markets or in the city‘s
clubs, bars and restaurants.
Cologne is the oldest among the big German
cities. The city‘s very name bears witness
to its 2000 years old Roman past as the town
of Colonia. As well as the legacy from Roman
times and the Middle Ages, particularly
the world-famous cathedral, UNESCO world
heritage, Cologne has an extremely lively arts
and culture scene. The city is also home of
the oldest fragrances „An Farina“ and „4711“
as well as the Cologne Chocolate Museum.
