Words of Welcome
from the
German Consul General
dear emirati friends,
liebe deutscHe landsleute,
Health is essential for all of us. eventually,
the state of health of a country shows in
its life expectancy and demographics. Germany
is an excellent example for that. life
expectancy in Germany increased in recent
years by about a month every three years.
apart from a growing consciousness for a
healthier lifestyle this is certainly due to
the state-of-the-art research and development
and the resulting high quality of
healthcare in Germany. This is a fact very
well known in the arab region, particularly
in the united arab emirates. His Highness
sheikh mohammed bin rashid al maktoum,
ruler of dubai, recently named his
wife, Her royal Highness princess Haya
bint al Hussein, chairperson of the board
of the most important healthcare body of
the emirate. so dubai visibly attaches great
importance to the healthcare of its local
population. The united arab emirates have
meanwhile reached a life expectancy rate
very close to highly developed countries
like ours.
60 % of all patients the Dubai Health Authority
is sending abroad for medical treatment is
going to Germany. Clinics in our country can
offer in most cases “tailor-made“ comprehensive
treatment for all illnesses under one roof
without the need for “clinic hopping“. The
fact that many Emiratis take along their families
when they travel to Germany for medical
treatment is a pleasant by-product for Germany’s
hospitality industry. But Germany is
Consulate General
of the Federal Republic of Germany
Dubai
not only a sought-after destination for Emirati
patients. The number of highly qualified
medical personnel from Germany in the clinics
of Dubai and other emirates is showing
that a continuous transfer of medical knowhow
is taking place. The same applies to the
transfer of technology. The medical equipment
of clinics in the United Arab Emirates
to a large extent originates from Germany.
In this field you find not just the world-renowned
big players, the ones you see e.g.
as German platinum sponsors of Arab Health,
but many so-called small and medium-sized
hidden champions in Germany’s healthcare
equipment industry. Many of them are traditionally
represented at the Arab Health, the
second largest healthcare trade show in the
world, second only to Medica in Düsseldorf.
For Germany Arab Health is one of the most
important trade fairs in Dubai. Like last year
the Federal Minister of Health will be present
to underline the significance of the event.
Several ministers and high-ranking officials
from many German federal states will attend,
not just as visitors, but bringing along experts
for seminars and conferences organized
by them in the framework of Arab Health.
Like in recent years Germany is present at the
37th Arab Health with the largest number
of foreign exhibitors. Let me thank Hamburg
Messe und Congress GmbH, the organizers
of the German pavilion, which were supported
by the Federal Ministry of Economics and
Technology and AUMA - the Association of
German Trade Fair Industry as well as several
related industry associations, GHE – the German
Healthcare Export Group, NuMOV – the
German Near and Middle East Association,
Spectaris – the German Industry Association
for Optical, Medical and Mechatronical Technologies
and ZVEI – the German Electrical
and Electronic Manufacturers’ Association.
But before all let me wish the more than 300
German exhibitors at this year’s edition of
Arab Health lots of success in maintaining,
enlarging and intensifying existing contacts
and explore the opportunities for new contacts
in the region. I think this will create a
real win-win relationship, not just in terms of
both partners in business, but for the people
in general.
Arab Health 2012
German HealtHcare industry is
sHowinG stronG presence aGain
Each year Arab Health becomes an even
more international event, attracting healthcare
and medical professionals from the
region as well as from across the globe. In
2011, more than 65,000 visitors came from
137 countries to Dubai, proving that Arab
Health is truly, where the healthcare world
comes to do business. For this year’s edition,
which is held from 23 to 26 January 2012, the
organizers expect to attract even more exhibitors
and visitors. As in the previous year,
Germany will be the largest exhibitor group
and it will proudly show the latest technological
achievements of “tailor-made solutions
from Germany”.
welcome to tHe German paVilion
The German manufacturers are among
the most valuable brands with a long tradition
and excellent reputation. The quality
mark of “Medtec made in Germany” represents
products designed at the cutting edge
of high technology and innovation. Germany
stands out due to a long tradition in medical
science as well as the development and
manufacturing of innovative medical technology.
This knowledge needs to be reconciled
with the experience and know-how of the
medical professionals from all over the world.
Dubai with its location at the cross-roads of
Asia, Europe and Africa is an excellent business
hub and therefore known as the perfect
place to meet key professionals, distributors
and other visitors.
Medical science is continuously advancing,
leading to new ways of treatment, which
requires continuous medical training and up
to date knowledge about the latest medical
technologies available on the market. Companies
invest an above average amount in
research and development, along with reacting
to the demand for greater efficiency and
improvement in the quality of the healthcare.
Capital is being invested in order to enhance
the capacity for early diagnosis of internal
illnesses, improved therapy procedures, the
replacement of damaged organs, bones and
joints with artificial, partly controllable elements.
The German Pavilion with its 260 German
exhibitors is located in the Zabeel Hall and
the Sheikh Rashid Hall. The German exhibitors
are looking forward to meeting visitors
at the Arab Health show 2012 in Dubai.
In a report released by KFH Research Limited
about the future status of the healthcare
sector in the GCC, industry experts anticipate
the healthcare market to triple within the
coming years to reach USD $55 billion in
2020, a year-on-year growth of 9%.This offers
proof of the immense potential for all
aspects of medical provisioning in the region,
namely in the transfer of know-how, training,
the building of clinics and hospitals and in the
import and export of pharmaceutical products
and medical supplies. The report also
indicates that the estimated value of forthcoming
GCC healthcare projects will reach
USD $10 billion alone. The rapid growth in
population rate and the increment of expenditure
per capita in the GCC on healthcare is
considered to be the most important factors.
These factors have caused governments in
the region to pay closer attention to meeting
the healthcare needs in their respective
countries by putting in place plans for several
large-scale projects in the sector as well as
reforming rules and regulations governing
the industry with the view of attracting more
private sector investment.
• An estimated US$10 billion worth of
healthcare projects are planned or underway
in the GCC.
• Healthcare cost in GCC expected to reach
the next two decades.
• More than 200 hospital projects have
been announced or are under construction
with a cumulative capacity of up to
Germany‘s Healthcare
Sector at a Glance
8
until recently, when someone in the Gulf
states asked you where to go in case of a
medical problem, the answer was clear: to
the airport. The lack of up-to-date medical
equipment and qualified human resources
combined with affordability of international
travel played central roles in the boom
of outbound medical tourism. although
some middle eastern countries like Jordan,
lebanon and united arab emirates (uae)
are trying to establish medical clusters in
order to attract regional and international
patients, large numbers of healthcare seekers
from Gulf and arab states are still travelling
to europe, us or asia for treatment.
Germany enjoys an outstanding reputation
when it comes to treating patients from all
over the world. There are over 2,000 hospitals,
including 37 university medical centers offering
the highest level of care. More than 1,200
preventive healthcare and rehabilitation facilities
and over 350 health resorts and spas are
complementing the German healthcare system
and offering attractive packages for both patients
and their escorts. “Made in Germany”
has always been a symbol of best quality in
the Arab world. The country offers some of the
highest standards of medical care in the world,
complemented by outstanding preventive
therapy and rehabilitation. It owes its leading
position to the unparalleled level of collaboration
between science, research and specialist
clinics in different regions of Germany.
Besides caring for German residents, more
than 200 hospitals have established an international
focus and offer additional services
for patients from abroad. Yearly, approximately
71,000 foreign patients seek medical
treatment as inpatients in Germany. On top
of that, there are more than 100,000 international
outpatients every year. That makes
Germany Europe’s number one address for
medical tourism and international patient
management.
Many international patients are coming
from Arab countries, mainly from the UAE,
Kuwait or Saudi Arabia. Numbers of patients
travelling to Germany from UAE have almost
doubled in the last five years, although UAE
citizens only represent about 2% of all international
patients in Germany. Under current
circumstances, numbers of patients from
Arab countries might even increase since the
political situation in several countries has
caused many armed conflicts with injured civilians.
On top of that, foreign patients can
take advantage of a weak Euro. Currently, a
treatment in Germany is about 20% cheaper
compared to last year.
Patients from Arab States seeking treatment
in Germany in 2009
Over the past years, more and more Arab
patients were travelling to German clinics
and hospitals for medical reasons. Because of
their state-of-the-art medical and non-medical
infrastructure, the German federal states
Bavaria, North-Rhine Westphalia, Baden-
Württemberg, Hamburg and Berlin are the
most popular destinations for international
patients from Arab countries. Especially university
hospitals and specialized clinics in cities
like Berlin, Munich, Bonn or Düsseldorf
are observing an increase of demand for medical
services from abroad. Most frequently,
medical services are availed in the fields of
orthopaedics and traumatology, neurology
and neurosurgery, paediatrics, endocrinology
and diabetology, general-, visceral-, and
transplantation surgery, oncology, cardiology,
cardiac surgery and thoracic surgery.
The journeys to Germany are also often
used by patients and their escorts for plastic
or cosmetic surgeries, checkups, as well as
eye and dental treatments.
Distribution of Arab patients in German
federal states in percentage
Arab guests expect top-notch treatments
combined with latest medical technology.
However, the high expectations of Arab
guests towards their journey to Germany are
not only focusing on medical treatments, they
are also expecting best support services and
housing standards like multilingual staff or
medical skilled interpreters, culturally trained
staff, multilingual signage and brochures,
comfortable and appropriate room furniture
and entertainment equipment, prayer rooms,
special food menus, travel support and assistance
for social programs. Without local airports
with direct connections to their countries
of origin and first class hotels for family
members and escorts, it would be impossible
to win Arab patients as guests. Shopping areas,
various possibilities for sightseeing and
leisure time programs on top of that lead to a
very high attractiveness of Germany, because
Arab guests often like to extend their stay for
several weeks and months instead of staying
simply for the duration of the treatment. A
simple reason for that is often the very hot
climate in their native countries during the
summer months. Just like many citizens of
middle European countries love spending the
summer on beaches in countries with high
temperatures, many Arabs like travelling to
countries with cold weather. And they enjoy
shopping: Anything that is expensive, exclusive
and luxurious like antiques, premium
watches, jewellery and exclusive cosmetics.
Luxury goods are often less expensive in
Quality & Design
that make any load bearable.
Germany than in their home countries and
they expect a higher quality from goods purchased
in Germany. On top of that, many
patients purchase medication after their
treatment, often for similar reasons such as
the expectation of higher quality and lower
prices. And in some cases necessary medication
is not available in their home country.
Furthermore, the network of consular
offices in Munich, Berlin or Bonn is also an
important factor when it comes to winning
Arab patients since those institutions are
often used as the first point of contact for a
trip to Germany. The UAE organizes the distribution
of nationals to different local clin-
ics through their General Consulate Office in
Munich, in cooperation with its branch office
in Bonn where the health department of the
institution is located.
Germany is indeed one of the best addresses
worldwide for state-of-the-art healthcare
combined with various leisure activities
in a secure atmosphere. Strong presence of
support agencies, marketing activities and
participation in medical exhibitions like “Arab
Health” in Dubai reflects the increased interest
from Arab patients in Germany as a destination
for medical tourism.
LASIK procedures are worldwide accepted
and FDA approved.
The surgery with the high speed laser takes
only couple of seconds, the procedure itself all
in all a few minutes. After a short rest patients
are able to leave the clinic on their own. This
outpatient procedure is totally painless except
for some slight irritation of the eye for the
first few hours. The day after surgery patients
can go back to their daily routine and these
patients are even able to drive on their own
to the follow-up consultations.
nearly every second person is dependent on glasses or contact lenses. and especially in uae with its heat and extreme humidity this
Dr. Bertram Meyer is one of the pioneers in
refractive laser surgery (LASIK). Since 1992
he enabled more than 20.000 patients to get
rid of glasses or contact lenses and to enjoy
a better quality of life. Both the “Laser Eye
Centre Cologne” as well as the “Laser Eye
Care & Research Centre” (LERC) in Dubai
are referral centres of Carl Zeiss Meditec
(Germany) for many years. Both centers are
equipped with high-tech technology and
latest diagnostic tools. At regular intervals
ophthalmologic colleagues join both centres
for medical instructions in the newest laser
technique.
In addition to this specialization patients
with “normal” eye problems are welcome at
the “Laser Eye Care & Research Centre”. Routine
check-ups are as important as the evaluation
and treatment of specific eye diseases,
e.g. examinations of the retina when suffering
diabetes mellitus, high blood pressure or age
related macula degeneration. Also aesthetic
blepharoplasties, outpatient surgeries of cataract
and glaucoma, laser treatments of the
retina and basic consultations for kids are part
of the daily work. A friendly and experienced
Germany
at a Glance
The federal republic of Germany lies in
the heart of europe and is a cosmopolitan,
democratic country with a great tradition
and a lively present. Germany has one of
the world’s strongest economies and offers
an innovative research and education landscape.
at the same time it has a strong
creative economy and a dynamic cultural
scene. Germany is the european union’s
most populous nation with 82 million
inhabitants.
tHe country: located in tHe
centre of europe
Germany is surrounded by nine neighbouring
countries. Its territory encompasses
roughly 357,000 square kilometres. It stretches
from the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in
the north to the Alps in the south. Some of
the largest European rivers – the Rhine, the
Danube and the Elbe – flow through Germany.
German landscapes are extraordinarily
varied and attractive: low and high mountain
ranges, extensive lakelands, forests and
roughly 2,390 kilometres of coastline.
History: endinGs and new
beGinninG
Historical schisms mark Germany’s path
towards constitutional democracy and a functioning
parliamentary system: they include
the failure of the March Revolution (1848)
and the Weimar Republic (1919–1933), but,
above all, the upheaval of National Socialism,
Holocaust and the Second World War (1933–
1945). One of the consequences of the Second
World War was the division of Germany
into the Federal Republic of Germany and
the German Democratic Republic (GDR). The
peaceful revolution by the people of the GDR
only brought down the Wall in 1989. The Two
Plus Four Treaty with the victorious powers
of the Second World War cleared the path
for German reunification on 3 October 1990.
politics: democratic partner in
tHe world
Since 1949 the Federal Republic of Germany
has been a democratic parliamentary
federation consisting of 16 Länder (states),
each with its own constitution, parliament
and government. The highest government
authority lies with the federation. In addition
to the German Bundestag (federal
parliament), the Bundesrat (federal council)
of delegates from Länder governments also
participates in the legislative process at the
federal level. The Basic Law forms the legal
and political foundation of government. It
binds legislation to the constitutional order.
Special significance is attached to the basic
rights anchored in the Basic Law. Germany
supports peace, democracy and human rights
as well as environmental and climate protection
worldwide in cooperation with its European
and transatlantic partners. Germany is
a member of important European and other
international organizations. The Federal Republic
of Germany is a founding member
state of the European Union (EU) and has
been a full member of the United Nations
(UN) since 1973. The German Bundeswehr
(armed forces) is engaged in foreign missions
that are mandated by the UN and conducted
by NATO and the EU.
Germany is one of the most highly developed
and efficient industrial nations and, after
the USA, Japan, and China, has the world’s
fourth largest national economy. With a population
of 82 million Germany is furthermore
the largest and most important market in the
European Union (EU). The Germany economy
focuses on industrially produced goods and
services. In particular German mechanical engineering
products, vehicles, and chemicals
are highly valued internationally. Around one
euro in four is earned from exports and more
than every fifth job depends directly or indirectly
on foreign trade. Having been “export
world champion” six times in a row between
2003 and 2008, in 2009, with exports worth
US$ 1,121 billion, around one third of the
gross national income, Germany was the second
biggest exporter of goods worldwide after
China (US$ 1,202 billion). Germany’s share
of total world trade is around nine percent.
Given its high focus on exports there is
scarcely any other country than Germany so
intertwined with the world economy and interested
in open markets. The most important
trading partners are France, the Netherlands,
the USA and Great Britain. In 2009,
goods and services worth EUR 82 billion
were exported to France, EUR 54 billion to
the Netherlands and the USA, and EUR 53
billion to Great Britain. In addition to trade
with the original European Union member
states, since the European Union’s expansion
eastwards (in 2004 and 2007) there has been
an increase in trade with the central and east
European EU Member States. A good ten
percent of all exports go to these countries.
Overall the share of total German exports to
the countries in the European Union is 63
percent.
The importance of trade and economic relations
with emerging nations in Asia is growing
continually. Asia is now the second most
important market for goods from Germany.
In 2009 14 percent of German exports went
to this region. China is the most important
partner. Since 1999 Germany has also been
China’s biggest European investor. Some
2,500 German companies have investments
in the country.
successful social marKet
economy model
Germany is a social market economy, in
other words: The state guarantees the free
play of entrepreneurial forces, while at the
same time endeavoring to maintain the social
balance. Also on account of this concept,
made popular in the post-War era by the
Minister of Economics at the time, Ludwig
Erhard, even in economically difficult times
Germany enjoys a high degree of social harmony,
something reflected in the fact that
labor disputes are so rare here. The social
partnership of trade unions and employer associations
is enshrined in the institutionalized
settlement of conflicts as outlined in the collective
labor law. The Basic Law guarantees
employers and trade unions independence in
negotiating wages, and they accordingly have
the right themselves to select the working
conditions.
Like all industrialized nations, since 2008
Germany has been affected by the global
banking, economic and financial market crisis,
which was triggered by speculation on
the real estate market in the United States
and hit Germany in the middle of a strong
growth phase. As an efficient response to the
systemic crisis in the finance sector and to
stabilize the situation on the financial markets,
in the winter of 2008-2009 the Federal
Government, like other countries (the United
States, France, Great Britain), put together
two rescue packages for the banks worth billions
and for business introduced two extensive
economy stimulus packages.
The state programs for repairing roads,
schools, and other public buildings proved to
be a success, as did the internationally highly
regarded efforts to maintain employment levels
despite severe capacity under-utilization
(short-time working) and the environment
incentive for older vehicles (until September
2009). The Growth Acceleration Act passed
in late 2009 brought further tax cuts and
stimuli for domestic demand.
restructurinG of international
financial arcHitecture
In view of the financial market crisis Germany
is strongly pursuing a reform of the
international financial structure at several
levels (European Union, G20, IMF). It envisages
extending the scope of financial market
regulation to all players, products and markets
as well as ensuring that the regulatory
measures are implemented in full and in a
consistent manner. In the banking sector Germany
is hoping for stricter equity capital and
liquidity regulations, internationally valid accounting
rules and a financial supervisory authority
that it more stringent in its controls.
At the same time the remuneration systems
in place in banks and insurance companies are
to be regulated more strictly; inappropriately
high bonuses for managers should be able to
be forbidden. With its economic policy the
Federal Government hopes to overcome the
decline in growth as quickly as possible and
ensure Germany emerges strengthened from
It is not only the 30 major corporations
such as Siemens, Volkswagen, Allianz, SAP
and BASF listed on the German share index
(DAX) that make the country competitive internationally,
but ten thousands of small and
medium-sized enterprises (up to 500 employees)
in manufacturing, in particular mechanical
engineering, the supplier industry, as well
as nano and biotechnology, which frequently
form clusters. Small and medium-sized enterprises
employ over 25 million people, making
them the biggest employer. They are regarded
as the backbone of the German economy
and also provide the majority of apprenticeships
for young people. Industry is also an
important pillar of the German economy. In
comparison with other industrial nations such
as Great Britain and the USA it has a broad
basis with a strong workforce – five million
people work in industrial companies. In no
other traditional economy does classic industrial
production play a comparably major role.
It contributes some percent to German economic
output.
Germany specializes in developing and
manufacturing complex industrial goods,
primarily capital goods and innovative production
technologies. The most important
sectors of industry are automotive manufacture,
mechanical engineering, electrical engineering
and chemicals. These four sectors
alone provide work for 2.9 million people,
who generate sales worth in excess of EUR
800 billion. Automotive manufacture is the
innovation engine room: Around 30 percent
of all internal company spending on R&D is in
this sector. With the six manufacturers VW,
Audi, BMW, Daimler, Porsche (VW) and Opel
(General Motors) Germany, alongside Japan,
China and the USA is one of the largest car
16
producers – with a significant share of the upper
mid-range and luxury market segments.
Nevertheless the worldwide crisis in sales has
hit German car manufacturers hard. So as to
be braced for the future all vehicle manufacturers
are now working on environmentally
friendly drives, for example on a new generation
of diesel engines, hybrid drives and
further electrification of the powertrain.
With a share of a good 13 percent, in
terms of sales the almost 6,000 mechanical
engineering companies are in second place
after vehicle manufacture. As the largest
employer in industry (965,000 jobs) and the
leading export sector, mechanical engineering
has a key position in the German economy.
The electronics industry is one of the strongest,
particularly innovative growth sectors.
Over 20 percent of investment by industry in
research and development is in the electronics
industry. The chemical industry, as a result
of takeovers and mergers partially owned by
foreign companies, primarily manufactures
producer goods. In BASF in Ludwigshafen
Germany boasts the world’s largest chemicals
company.
More than 29 million people work in the
service sector – around 12 million in private
and public service providers, ten million in
commerce, hospitality and transport, and
seven million in financing, leasing, and corporate
services. Banking and insurance are a
pillar of the service sector. It is concentrated
in Frankfurt/Main, the leading banking sector
in continental Europe, where the European
Central Bank (ECB), the German central
bank, (the Bundesbank), and Deutsche Börse
are all headquartered.
Cultural and creative industry on the up
The cultural and creative industry is a sector
that is increasingly attracting attention. It
embraces fields such as music, literature, art,
cinema and the stage, as well as radio/TV, the
press, advertising, design and software and
numbers some 238,000 companies employing
almost one million people. The creative industry
has thus not only gained considerable
significance for the national economy, but is
also in itself a model for a modern economy:
It offers above-average employment opportunities,
is playing a pioneering role on the
way to a knowledge-based economy and is a
significant source of original innovative ideas.
The most important economic hubs in Germany
are the Ruhr area (an industrial region
that is being transformed into a center of
high-tech and service provision), the metropolitan
areas of Munich and Stuttgart (hightech,
automotive), Rhine-Neckar (chemicals),
Frankfurt/Main (finance), Cologne, Hamburg
(harbor, Airbus aircraft construction, media).
In the new federal states a small but efficient
industrial sector has now established itself
in various high-tech centers, so-called “beacon
regions”, for example in Dresden, Jena,
Leipzig, Leuna and Berlin-Brandenburg.
International investors rate Germany as
one of the most attractive centers. Direct
investment from outside the country now
stands at EUR 460 billion and includes major
investments from corporations such as General
Electric and AMD from the USA. They
value the central geographic location and
the stability of the law. Furthermore, in comparison
with other countries Germany scores
particularly well with regard to infrastructure
(traffic, telecommunications), the quality of
its higher education institutes and research
facilities, research and development, and the
qualifications of its workforce. More than
three quarters of adults have trained in a profession
and 13 percent of them have a university
degree. Investors also rate the quality
of life in Germany highly.
Destination
Germany
Great cuisine, relaxing in mother nature,
festivals and celebrations, vacation, design
and fashion, inspiring architecture: Germany
has plenty of all to offer – and is far
removed from all the clichés that might still
abound about lederhosen and sauerkraut.
but the numerous visitors from abroad who
are increasingly discovering that Germany is
an interesting vacation destination already
know this. not just because of the wealth
of German cultural and historical sights, but
also because of the wide-ranging regional
cuisine and the changing landscapes. in
fact, although the Germans are the undisputed
world champions when it comes to
foreign travel, they still prefer to holiday
between the north sea and the alps.
Germany is becoming increasingly popular
as a travel destination: In 2010 the German
Federal Statistical Office recorded 60.3 million
overnights by foreign guests from the
North Sea to the Alps. Despite the economic
crisis Germany succeeded in maintaining its
high level of tourism and in comparison with
other countries was even able to increase
its share of the international market. Berlin,
Hamburg, Munich, Frankfurt and Cologne
are the most popular cities with international
visitors. Business travelers in particular value
Germany as a destination. With an 11 percent
market share of all international business
trips Germany is the market leader in
business tourism worldwide.
In Berlin, the number of overnights has
been increasing for years: In 2010 it rose by
more than one million to around 20.8 million.
Most visitors to Germany come from other
European countries, the USA and Asia. With
regard to individual states, Bavaria, North
Rhine-Westphalia and Baden-Württemberg
are the preferred destinations.
In addition to historical sights, top-quality
concert series, art exhibitions, theater performances
as well as major international sports
events, street festivals and atmospheric
Christmas markets are just a few of the attractions
that bring the visitors flocking. The
Germans love to celebrate, and never miss an
opportunity to do so. Many festivals such as
Munich’s renowned Oktoberfest, the Carnival
of the Cultures in Berlin, Fastnacht in Mainz
and Carnival in Cologne have long become an
international synonym for high spirits and a
cosmopolitan atmosphere.
Whereas most foreign visitors are drawn to
the big cities, Germans themselves tend to
visit smaller places and rural regions in their
home country: The coasts of the North and
Baltic Seas, the Black Forest and Lake Constance
are the most popular vacation destinations.
Germany boasts no less than 14
national parks, 101 nature parks and 15 biosphere
reserves. However, for active holiday
makers too coastlines, lakes, as well as low
and high mountain ranges are all becoming
increasingly important. There are all sorts of
opportunities available: There are as many as
nine European long distance trails stretching
for 9,700 kilometers throughout the
country and a total of 190,000 kilometers of
signposted walks. And for cyclists there are
50,000 kilometers of track on which to discover
the country.
wellness Holidays
Feel-good Germany: Wellness and health
have for years been the rage among tourists.
Many German holidaymakers put a relaxation
and wellness vacation at the top of their list.
And an increasing number of foreign guests
choose a relaxing holiday in one of the 330
recognized German spa towns and thermal
springs. Be it classical massage or Qigong,
Chinese energy motion therapy, there are
any number of hotels up and down the country
specialized in offering wellness holidays.
Especially popular are the long-standing
sea spa towns along the Baltic coast, such
as Heiligen damm, the “white town on the
coast” and the oldest and perhaps most refined
German sea spa town, with a famous,
award-winning grand hotel.
South Germany scores highest with a
wholesome climate, thermal springs, and “hay
baths”: Baden-Baden in Baden-Württemberg
and Bavaria’s Allgäu region are the preferred
wellness destinations. However, in Mecklenburg-Western
Magic Cities:
The Eleven Stars
of Germany
Every year, Germany‘s biggest and most
popular cities attract millions of visitors from
all over the world. Everyone from business
travellers and cultural aficionados to shopaholics
and party animals will find exactly what
they‘re looking for.
berlin
The events of the past have left their mark
on the cityscape - and the city is still changing
today. „Berlin is always in the process of
becoming“, remarked historian Karl Scheffler,
and this is one of the traits that makes it one
of Europe‘s most vibrant, exciting and colourful
capitals. Berlin has a vibe all of its own,
and wherever you go, you can experience the
pulsating life on the boulevards, in the art
galleries, at the flea markets or in the city‘s
clubs, bars and restaurants.
Cologne is the oldest among the big German
cities. The city‘s very name bears witness
to its 2000 years old Roman past as the town
of Colonia. As well as the legacy from Roman
times and the Middle Ages, particularly
the world-famous cathedral, UNESCO world
heritage, Cologne has an extremely lively arts
and culture scene. The city is also home of
the oldest fragrances „An Farina“ and „4711“
as well as the Cologne Chocolate Museum.
dresden
Dresden is one of the most beautiful
baroque cities in Europe – and a bustling
metropolis at the same time. Because of its
wealth of tradition and superb setting in the
Elbe valley, the city was long ago dubbed “the
German Florence”. It has since developed
into a modern city, the attraction of which is
based in equal measure on its many cultural
treasures as well as on its progressive scientific
and industrial prowess.
düsseldorf
The elegant city on the Rhine stands for
fashion, shopping, culture and extraordinary
events. Great international designers present
themselves on Königsallee, one of the most
luxurious shoppers’ paradises in Europe.
From there, it is just a few steps to the old
town with more than 260 pubs and restaurants.
In its narrow lanes with their easy atmosphere,
countless small fashion stores and
avant-garde shops have been established.
franKfurt
A look at the city´s silhouette reveals what
most people already know: Frankfurt am
Main exudes cosmopolitan flair and style. Today,
Frankfurt is home to the German Stock
Exchange, the European Central Bank, the
Deutsche Bundesbank and over 300 financial
institutions from around the world, making
the 1200-year-old trade and commerce city
one of Europe´s foremost finance centres.
The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg
truly is a metropolis, but with an abundance
of green areas and countless canals Hamburg
also ranks as one of Germany’s greenest and
most attractive cities. Trade always played an
important role in Hamburg’s economy, most
outstandingly visible in Hamburg’s impressive
harbour and Europe’s most significant urban
development district – the HafenCity.
The Royal Gardens of Herrenhausen with
their baroque Great Garden have remained
unchanged for more than 300 years. The
grotto designed by the artist Niki de Saint
Phalle is a major attraction here. The world‘s
foremost trade fair venue has a very cosmopolitan
feel at its atmospheric festivals,
celebrations and concerts, as well as a lively
cultural scene.
According to an EU-wide study, Leipzig’s
more than 500,000 inhabitants are the most
satisfied in Germany when it comes to their
hometown. Be it the theatre, the opera or
the over 50 museums, the zoo, the abundant
green spaces or the newly created lakes to
the north and south of the city, Leipzig offers
countless opportunities for making your
event something to remember.
„Munich nestles between art and beer like
a village between hills.“ Originally written by
Heinrich Heine some 150 years ago, these
words remain true today. With the Oktoberfest
and Opera, Hofbräuhaus beer hall and
Pinakothek art galleries, BMW and Bayern
Munich, the city manages to marry old Bavarian
tradition with vibrant modern life.
nuremberG
Nuremberg boasts a surprising number
of superlatives: it has the largest pedestrian
shopping area in Germany, it is the safest city
in Bavaria and it is one of Europe‘s foremost
regions for technology. The huge numbers of
research and educational institutions have
secured the city its place among the leading
locations for business and research.
stuttGart
A vibrant city with top-class art and culture,
appealing leisure activities and fantastic
shops, Stuttgart is at the centre of one
of Germany‘s foremost economic regions.
What’s more, the people of Stuttgart really
do know how to throw a party – the lively
Stuttgart Beer Festival, the traditional Wine
Festival and the atmospheric Stuttgart Christmas
market are just three of its popular
events.
history than Berlin‘s signature attraction.
When the Berlin Wall fell in 1989, thousands
of Germany in its shadow. The Brandenburg
cHurcH of our lady
Dresden‘s most famous attraction is a
masterpiece of baroque architecture. The destruction
and rebuilding of the Church of Our
Lady symbolises the history of the city like no
other building. After falling victim to the intense
bombing raids of 1945, its remarkable
ruins became a powerful reminder of the destructive
effects of war. Following its reconstruction,
which was supported by donations
from all over the world, the building is now a
symbol for reconciliation and peace.
HamburG’s port
An impressive labyrinth of canals, basins,
quays and bridges, Hamburg‘s port is one of
the foremost sea freight centres in the world,
and – with its harbour tours, promenade
the Landungsbrücken jetties, the arrival and
Shopping in Germany
shopping made in Germany is a wonderful
experience. Germany has a huge range of
different places to shop, from the traditional
atmosphere of its town centres to more
than 400 shopping malls, each like a world
of its own. The one thing they all have in
common is a colourful mix of shops, boutiques,
restaurants and cafés. and nearly
all German towns and cities have pedestrian
areas with large department stores and
shopping arcades.
shopping is fun, especially when you
have a huge variety of top-quality goods
to choose from. and there are so many
things that make a shopping tour around
cities like munich, Hamburg or berlin particularly
special: German “originals”, for
An increasing number of international labels
Second Opinion – Unique Solutions
Get the right advice
made in Germany
by definition “second opinion“ is a relevant
medical judgment from a highly
qualified medical specialist for patients
concerning diagnosis and treatment over
and above the existing medical status. This
is a more and more accepted medical service
for patients, insurance companies and
governmental institutions with the goal of
obtaining decision guidance when it comes
to complex or rare medical conditions. and
eventually, the right advice followed by tailor-made
treatment will strengthen trust in
the healthcare system and may even save
money. beyond that, second opinion is a
further training tool for treating doctors.
Hence, this is a very important topic for the
whole Gulf region.
Even though teaching in conventional medicine
is broadly standardized and practiced
based on evidence, taking the right decisions
for an optimal treatment might be difficult
in particular cases. Sometimes there are uncertainties
regarding diagnosis and adequate
therapy. This uncertainty is often even bigger
if the disease is very complex. Not uncommonly
diseases overlap and influence one
another. For this reason in severe cases that
require a risky treatment as well as in cases
with various therapeutical options, Second
Opinions should be taken into consideration.
And some patients might just have doubts
about the diagnosis of their disease, especially
if curing measures have failed so far.
“A qualified Second Opinion from a renowned
expert can free patients from inner
and external pressure, stabilize them psychologically
and keep them from being prone to
speculative and often pecuniary based promises
of healing”, explains Prof. Joern Treuner,
Managing Director of GMC. Second Opinion
is also a sensitive topic in the relation between
the patient and the doctor. If the patient asks
the doctor to obtain a Second Opinion, the
latter might feel criticized and occasionally react
offended because he sees his competence
doubted. But luckily most doctors are confident.
Especially if they are sure about their
competence they don’t mind and welcome ad-
ditional opinions in severe cases of illness and
will suggest them themselves.
A Second Opinion assessment has the advantage
of a neutral and objective statement.
The treating doctor is not completely free
of a subjective view on his patient. German
insurance companies already take account of
that by bearing all costs for a Second Opinion.
If a cost-intensive treatment according to
international medical standards is indicated,
Second Opinion becomes of increasing importance
for insurance companies, governmental
institutions or charity organizations. Those
usually have to decide on expensive treatments
and need a reference that is neutral
and competent on the subject.
Of course a Second Opinion is only justifiable
if it is qualified and consulted in accordance
with the patient. For an assessment of a
disease all relevant records must be revised.
When appropriate, further diagnostic inquiries
can be necessary to get a profound expert
opinion. “Apart from medical expertise, a Second
Opinion procedure requires a network of
well-recognized and serious experts. Only a
professional organization can provide reliable
expertise”, states Prof. Guenther Kieninger,
Medical Director at CEDARS J.A. International
Hospital. The hospital is part of GMC
network and has started cooperation with
renowned German partners in 2005. CEDARS
J.A. International Hospital aims at extending
the existing facility with a 70 bed hospital
in 2013. Another GMC partner is Klinikum
Stuttgart – one of the biggest and most ef-
ficient hospitals in Germany. More than 50
clinics and institutes enable high level of
specialization and comprehensive business
activities in almost all medical faculties. Annually
they have around 80,000 inpatients.
And 1,000 patients come from abroad, out
of which almost two-thirds are from the
UAE. “Stuttgart is a safe city and offers highperformance
medicine on a world-level. For
patients of the gulf states, for adults as well
as children, the major indications are neurosurgery,
orthopedics and oncology”, says
Andreas Braun, head of the International
Unit at Klinikum Stuttgart. Nevertheless, in
many cases medical reports prepared in the
home countries of foreign patients are either
incomplete, inadequate or give a wrong
diagnosis. In these cases Second Opinion
could help to assess cases correctly, reassure
patients and avoid unnecessary costs. So far
neither in Egypt nor in the Gulf region or in
other Arab states, there was a professional
organization with interconnected medical experts
of various medical specialties.
German medical consultants
The Consultant Company „German Medical
Consultants“ (GMC) now offers Second
Opinion services within the scope of a
spectrum of medical consultant services for
Egypt, UAE and the Gulf region. GMC has
established a network of medical experts at
the university level in Germany and at the
local level in the home countries of Arab
patients. GMC wants to help patients who
need the advice of an expert due to illness
or health complaints. Insurance companies,
governmental institutions as well as charity
organizations can benefit from GMC. Getting
an expert opinion via GMC can alleviate the
treatment and offers a further training character
to the treating physician.
“A good advice may be expensive. But no advice may be even more expensive.”
These carrier systems are used wherever
you need a lot of equipment to help care for
patients. I am referring mainly to the operating
theatre and the intensive care unit, but
not only. Hospitals and doctors’ offices require
solutions that can really perform. Maintaining
the highest levels of hygiene is paramount,
but design also has to support the work of
care givers. Medical institutions purchase carrier
systems together with the other equipment.
That’s why our customers are leading
original equipment manufacturers (OEM).
dG: what services do you offer the oems?
We provide them with standard solutions
for their product portfolio and carrier systems
for, say, a specific hospital, which we do project
by project. Even the project-specific systems
meet all the relevant guidelines and are
given CE certification. In addition, we develop
mounts for new systems. And we always
keep the area of application and the functionality
of the respective product in mind.
Because we develop our material in-house,
we are able to react quickly and individually
to customer wishes.
dG: you offer integrated carrier solutions,
what makes them special?
With our carrier systems, all the connected
cables of the mounted apparatus run inside
the arms. This avoids an unhygienic tangle of
cables. It serves esthetic purposes as well, and
it meets the highest standards in critical care
areas. They are especially easy to clean and
resistant to disinfectants. The mounts are also
flexible, highly functional and made to last.
Our mounts are manufactured according to
ISO standards. Only top-notch materials are
used in manufacturing the components. Our
production site is in Germany. It is subject to
continuous quality management and is regularly
audited by leading international OEMs.
ralswieK: störtebeKer festiVal
Pirates ahoy! Every summer Ralswiek, on the
island of Rügen, goes into a state of emergency
as the most notorious of the Victual
Brothers, Klaus Störtebeker, takes over this
peaceful town with his band of pirates. Watch
out for pirates and buccaneers - Störtebeker
is in town! Each year plays about the famous
pirate, based on real historical events, are
performed on the charming waterside stage.
More than 120 members of cast and crew,
four ships, several horses and special effects
make this festival a real treat. The highlight
of every evening is the firework display over
the „Great Jasmund Lagoons“.
GarmiscH-partenKircHen:
four Hills tournament
Garmisch-Partenkirchen is the second
of four towns which host the ski jumping
world championships known as the Four Hills
Tournament. The venue for the event, which
traditionally takes place on New Years Day,
is the Olympic Ski Stadium. Kicking off in
Oberstdorf, the championships then move on
to the New Year ski jumping competition in
Garmisch-Partenkirchen. Innsbruck is up next,
while the fourth and final leg takes place in
Bischofshofen.
bonn: rHine in flames
When 2,000 red Bengal lights bathe the
famous sights of the Rhine and the riverside
promenades between Bonn and Linz in a festive
glow on the first Saturday in May, the
illusion of the „Rhine in Flames“ is created.
On land or on board one of the 60 cruise
boats, the spectacular firework event in Linz,
Remagen, Bad Honnef and Bonn captivates
tens of thousands of people every year. The
Rhine is transformed by a frenzy of fireworks,
and there is also a kaleidoscopic program of
entertainment and other events. Come along
and experience the spectacle for yourself!
municH: oKtoberfest
Year after year the Oktoberfest attracts
millions of visitors from all over the world
to the Theresienwiese. Beer tents and fairground
rides as far as the eye can see guarantee
an exuberant atmosphere for a whole
two weeks. Experience the real Germany of
traditional music and costumes, wurst, pretzels,
and an inexhaustible supply of the finest
beer in the world
coloGne: carniVal
Carnival is the first thing that springs to
mind when Germans think about Cologne,
where it is celebrated in a particularly lavish
and traditional fashion. „Kölle Alaaf“ –
a cheer for the city of Cologne – is the cry
that rings out at the opening of the carnival
season. Over five fun-packed days it is the
Jecken (carnival jesters) that hold court at
the carnival festivities. This spectacular event
culminates in a crazy Rose Monday parade,
when people call on the passing floats to
throw them sweets and bunches of flowers.
Come along and get swept up in the Rheinish
carnival atmosphere!
HanoVer‘s „scHützenfest“ fair
The Schützenfest fair in Hanover can
rightly claim to be the largest of its kind in
the world. For ten days the city‘s Schützenplatz
fairground turns into a huge stage for
the festivities – just as it has done since the
17 th century and visitors can expect a festival
of superlatives. Electrifying, ultra-modern
rides sit happily alongside their more traditional
counterparts, and the place is packed
with stalls, beer gardens and party marquees.
Despite all this, the highlight of this longestablished
festival is the riflemen‘s parade,
the longest procession in Europe.
berlin: berlinale
The international film festival has blossomed
to become the most acclaimed event
in the city‘s cultural calendar. Every year this
huge two-week event attracts over 16,000
visitors from all over the world to Berlin.
With around 350 films covering all genres,
lengths and formats, the Berlinale boasts
an eclectic program that includes countless
European and world premières. The line-up
ranges from major productions with stellar
casts to lesser-known independent pictures.
An unashamedly public festival, the Berlinale
is not just an event for industry insiders.
rostocK: Hanse sail
Hanse Sail, the Baltic region‘s biggest
regatta for traditional sailing boats, attracts
around half a million people to the Hanseatic
town of Rostock every year. It is not only
the largest maritime event in Mecklenburg-
Western Pomerania, but also a huge public
festival with an eclectic mix of entertainment
and cultural attractions. Everywhere you look
there are tall ships, museum ships and vintage
boats. The traditional sailing vessels are
a particular highlight of the regatta.
The Standard of
Veterinary Services
in the UAE
The largest healthcare exhibition in the
middle east, the arab Health, is a good opportunity
to look into the standards of the
human medical sector and available equipment
as well as into the field of veterinary
medicine.
The veterinary field can be clearly divided into
two different areas: First of all the veterinary
facilities of the Sheikhs and other very rich
private persons mostly from the Arab World,
who run their own clinics and hospitals mainly
for their race horses, race camels, falcons and
their private collections of wild animals. The
equipment and the spacious facilities reflect
clearly that money is no issue – whatever is
state of the art will be bought and will be
available for the above mentioned animals, as
long as it makes sense. The veterinarians who
run and work in these facilities are on the
payroll of these families. Prestige comes before
profit – profitability is not the main aim.
On the other hand there are public veterinary
clinics. These clinics deal mainly with
private owned horses and pets – dogs, cats,
rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pet birds like
parrots and many more. These institutions
have to calculate hard and have to run in a
profitable manner, otherwise invoices cannot
be paid, salaries cannot be transferred and,
most important now, the equipment cannot
be renewed and kept up to the latest Western
standard.
The Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic is a good
example of a privately owned and run small
animal veterinary clinic in the Middle East.
Dr. Wolf Ofner
The clinic is looking after pets from the expat
population and locals in the Green Community
in Dubai Investments Park since 2008.
Any pet owner should expect that the veterinary
clinic he is choosing for his pet has
at least the following equipment on site,
serviced and running: The range of diagnostic
tools start with simple things like an
ophthalmoscope/otoscope to examine eyes
and ears, a microscope for parasite diagnostic
and cytology of different smears and samples
of fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) or
equipment to check different body fluids like
urine and blood. The in-house laboratory can
analyse urine, stool and of course blood samples.
Haematology and the blood chemistry
are vital for quick and efficient diagnostic
without losing important time to get reliable
results in minimal time. After the diagnostic
is done, in-house care in the cage room is
often needed. The highly trained and qualified
veterinary nurses are now looking after
the beloved pets and treat them under the
instructions of the Austrian/German veterinary
team with state-of-the-art veterinary
products mostly imported from Europe, US
and/or Australia. The surgical equipment includes
not only soft tissue surgical tools for
spays, neuters or tumour resections, but also
the whole range of orthopaedic/bone tissue
surgical tools to fix broken bones after car accidents
or torn ligament after “sport injuries”
from the weekend trips into the wadis or
the desert. All these surgical procedures are
done under the permanent monitoring of the
heart, oxygen partial pressure and breathing
Dr. Dieter Mallaczek
Advertorial
rate. If needed, the heated intensive care
oxygen cage is used in the wake-up phase.
The digital x-ray unit and the ultrasound are
rounding up the spectrum of high end diagnostic
tools in the clinic.
An additional part of the one-key-solution
is the well sorted pet accessory shop, the pet
groomer, who provides medical haircuts and
baths as well was beauty haircuts and the cat
boarding unit, where they look after your cat
during your vacation or your weekend trip.
So compared to the Western World there
is no big difference. The only equipment
which is not available for pets in the Middle
East is the big high maintenance machines
like CT and/or MRT. However, in the Western
World these units are mainly available at
University clinics and do not belong to the
normal set-up of equipment in a small animal
clinic.
We hope that this short overview of
equipment standards together with diagnostic
and medical services is helpful for considering
the right clinic for your pet.
