The Standard of
Veterinary Services
in the UAE
The largest healthcare exhibition in the
middle east, the arab Health, is a good opportunity
to look into the standards of the
human medical sector and available equipment
as well as into the field of veterinary
medicine.
The veterinary field can be clearly divided into
two different areas: First of all the veterinary
facilities of the Sheikhs and other very rich
private persons mostly from the Arab World,
who run their own clinics and hospitals mainly
for their race horses, race camels, falcons and
their private collections of wild animals. The
equipment and the spacious facilities reflect
clearly that money is no issue – whatever is
state of the art will be bought and will be
available for the above mentioned animals, as
long as it makes sense. The veterinarians who
run and work in these facilities are on the
payroll of these families. Prestige comes before
profit – profitability is not the main aim.
On the other hand there are public veterinary
clinics. These clinics deal mainly with
private owned horses and pets – dogs, cats,
rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, pet birds like
parrots and many more. These institutions
have to calculate hard and have to run in a
profitable manner, otherwise invoices cannot
be paid, salaries cannot be transferred and,
most important now, the equipment cannot
be renewed and kept up to the latest Western
standard.
The Blue Oasis Veterinary Clinic is a good
example of a privately owned and run small
animal veterinary clinic in the Middle East.

The clinic is looking after pets from the expat
population and locals in the Green Community
in Dubai Investments Park since 2008.
Any pet owner should expect that the veterinary
clinic he is choosing for his pet has
at least the following equipment on site,
serviced and running: The range of diagnostic
tools start with simple things like an
ophthalmoscope/otoscope to examine eyes
and ears, a microscope for parasite diagnostic
and cytology of different smears and samples
of fine needle aspiration biopsies (FNAB) or
equipment to check different body fluids like
urine and blood. The in-house laboratory can
analyse urine, stool and of course blood samples.
Haematology and the blood chemistry
are vital for quick and efficient diagnostic
without losing important time to get reliable
results in minimal time. After the diagnostic
is done, in-house care in the cage room is
often needed. The highly trained and qualified
veterinary nurses are now looking after
the beloved pets and treat them under the
instructions of the Austrian/German veterinary
team with state-of-the-art veterinary
products mostly imported from Europe, US
and/or Australia. The surgical equipment includes
not only soft tissue surgical tools for
spays, neuters or tumour resections, but also
the whole range of orthopaedic/bone tissue
surgical tools to fix broken bones after car accidents
or torn ligament after “sport injuries”
from the weekend trips into the wadis or
the desert. All these surgical procedures are
done under the permanent monitoring of the

rate. If needed, the heated intensive care
oxygen cage is used in the wake-up phase.
The digital x-ray unit and the ultrasound are
rounding up the spectrum of high end diagnostic
tools in the clinic.
An additional part of the one-key-solution
is the well sorted pet accessory shop, the pet
groomer, who provides medical haircuts and
baths as well was beauty haircuts and the cat
boarding unit, where they look after your cat
during your vacation or your weekend trip.
So compared to the Western World there
is no big difference. The only equipment
which is not available for pets in the Middle
East is the big high maintenance machines
like CT and/or MRT. However, in the Western
World these units are mainly available at
University clinics and do not belong to the
normal set-up of equipment in a small animal
clinic.
