to Alexander technique, gamelan,
Broadway song and dance and early

children and adolescents accompanied by

The Shelly Berger School of Music
begins its summer session in May and
plans follow up classes through August.
Lome Lofsky, one of Canada's finest jazz
guitarists, offers jazz guitar master classes
evenings from 7 to 9 pm starting May 11.
Also beginning in mid-May are master
classes from Juno award-winner Phil
Dwyer (Best Jazz Album), and Shelly
Berger's course in contemporary musicarranging

Vocal school pro VOCE Studios has
another week-long Singer's Retreat in
Lion's Head on Georgian Bay at the end of
July, with private lessons and workshops
and a final public concert. The Retreat is
both for advanced singers looking to mix
vacation time with lessons, and amateurs
looking for a musical vacation. It's an
intensive with a "relaxed atmosphere,"
with time to hike and swim.
In June, Jocelyn Rasmussen and Lee
Musilcer will lead a workshop in Broadway
and pop repertoire focussing on belt
techniques. Peter Neff will teach a series
oflleder Classes and a Perfonnance
Class. Placement audition required. Tina
Torlone will teach Learn to Sing for
adult beginners. This intensive yet
informal one week evening course in July
will cover both the basics of vocal
technique and how to put them into
practice. Ability to read music not
required. The seven-week intensive
Opera Workshop in June and July with
Mila Filatova and Edward Franko will
culminate in a fully staged performance.

University Settlement Music and
Arts School (23 Grange Road, near the
Art Gallery of Ontario) offers two
affordable summer music programs for
children and adults with qualified and
experienced teachers. Some subsidies are
available for low income families. The
School hosts daytime Music Camp, one
session for younger and one session for
older children, usually in July and August.
Children play instruments, sing, compose
and listen to music of many styles and
cultures, and get free swim lessons. Price
usually around $200. Spaces are limited:

Between July 10 and August 20 the
Music and Arts Sununer School
offers six weekly individual lessons on 17
instruments and voice, plus group music,
dance, and art classes for babies, children,
adults and seniors of all abilities and

The University of Toronto Faculty of
Music offers a variety of Sununer
Music Session programs. The six week
Music Theor-y Institute prepares
students to take RCM exams. Other
programs were not confirmed by press

Children and Youth
Centauri Arts Sununer Camp is a
residential camp for boys and girls 8-18
years near Wellandport in the Niagara
region and specializes in arts training.
Centauri offers sessions lasting 10-14
days between July 4 and August 22 which
mix traditional summer camp activities
like sports with intensive and specialized
music and arts training. Programs include
choir, theatre and musical theatre, dance,
creative writing, visual arts, acting for 1V
and film and "Artsquest," a fantasy arts
adventure. Junior leadership courses and
ESL classes are also offered. The cost is

Choirs Ontario runs two camps. The
Children's Choir Camp at the Albion
Hills Conservation Centre in Bolton,
Ontario runs between July 24 and July 29.
There is no audition, but there is a short
introductory musical test of the singers'
abilities. The residential camp is open to a
maximum of sixty campers 9 to 16 years
(unchanged voices only), and alternates
rehearsals with environmental activities,
socials like the staff talent show,
campfires, and a skit night. Past educators
have included Barbara Clark, Jean
Ashworth Bartle, John Barron, and
Glenda Crawford. The cost of $365
includes accomodation, food, all rehearsal
and workshop fees, camp T-shirt, three

The deadline has passed for the
Ontario Youth Choir, which, led by the
Tafelmusilc Chamber Choir's Ivars
Taurins, prepares August 20-27 at
Queen's University in Kingston for a tour
of eastern Ontario in September. Tuition

Canadian Children's Opera Chonts
has run a Workshop Week at Camp Kilcoo
near Haliburton Hills, near Mindon,
Ontario for over 15 years. Please note that
only children 10 to 16 years who are
successful applicants to the eeoc Main
Chorus are eligible, and auditions for
eeoc membership are held in April and

The Canadian Opera Company has in
the past conducted a Sununer Opera
camp. For information please contact

trevorr@coc.ca. Last year the C0C ran
three one-week camp sessions starting the
first week of August.
Young Musicians and
Adults
The Centuries Opera Association
Swruner Opera Workshop gives
young singers a chance to perform in the
theatre. "Young" singers are young in
experience and are of all ages. "They're
people who have talent, but who have
never had a chance to perform before,"
COA director Michele Strano says. "A 40-
year-old can be a young singer." COA
produces complete operas from the
standard repertoire in full costume and
staging. This year Centuries is producing
Gluck's Orfeo e Eurydice and Donizetti's
Don Pasquale. "These are the roles that
young singers should learn to put into
action in the future," Strano explains.
Performances will be staged at the Leah
Posluns Theatre.
The program costs vary depending on
the complexity of the role, vocal coaching
requirements, and costumes. Training
runs from June 12 to August 27. Auditions

The Aria International Sununer
Academy offers three weeks of intensive,
professional training for young musicians.
