Last, but not least of the listings
this month, on March 29 at 8pm,
University of Toronto Faculty of
Back in June of last year I raised
the question of jazz venues and
the "respectability" jazz aspired
to when it was presented in, let's
say Carnegie Hall, as opposed to
Eddie Condon's or The Village
Vanguard. For example, is a jazz
performance at the Montreal
Bistro by Junior Mance any less
valid than a concert hall perfonnance
by Cyrus Chestnut? TI1e
earlier social prejudices against
jazz and jazz musicians have all
but disappeared. Most of my
fellow jazz musicians are, as the
time-honoured phrase goes,
"decent, law-abiding citizens",
and all of them sound at least as
good in a conducive club setting
as they do in a concert hall. I
have seen the Basie band play in
concert and I've seen them play
for a dance. I think they had more
fun at the dance. If you have any
thoughts on the matter, please
send them to me at WholeNote.
In the meantime remember that
music is best enjoyed live, be it
in a concert hall or in a club.
About a year ago, I presented
Travel! in' Light, a series of six
radio progranunes on CBC Radio
2. Well, things are so bad at CBC
these days that they have decided
to give me another series. Each
week I take a trip into my
personal time warp and share
some music, some anecdotes,
some memories and insight into
the jazz life. It airs on Fridays,
begim1ing March 3 at I Opm. Give
it a listen, because if I b1unp into you
on the street, I'll ask questions!
I've just spent most of the past
month at home with three broken
ribs, so I've had Jots of time to
surf the net finding interesting
band links for the readers of this
colunu1. Here are a couple of my
favourites:
Community Music Mailing List
(http://www.io.cornl;rboerger/
COIIUUUnity.html). This page
allows you to subscribe to a
mailing list that discusses items
of interest to people in the band
world. TI1e site also has lulks to
band associations all over the
world, music companies and
instnunent specilic web pages.
The World Of Wind Ensembles &
Symphonic Bands (http://
bandchat.schoohnusic.com/
windslindex.html) features the
Band Chat mailing list, an
archive of concert programs, and
a compilation of wind ensemble
and band repertoire categorized
by style and difficulty level.
If you'd like to see some sites
The Markham Concert Band is
presenting A Night at the Opera
featuring music by Verdi, Wagner
& Bizet. Dr. Diana Brault and
the band are joined by the
Raymer Wood Public School
Choir and their director, Shirley
Madden. (See March 5 listings
for details)
TI1e Hannaford Street Silver
Band has two very interesting
and very different programs this
month. The first is a performance
with the Hamilton Philharmonic
Orchestra on March 10.
TI1e combined group will perfonn
music for orchestra and brass
band, including the 1812
Overture. TI1e second concert is
on March 12, and it features the
HSSB playing music by Japanese
composers. The band has two
guests for this concert - euphonium
soloist Shoichiro Hokazono,
and conductor James Curnow.
Curnow's name will be familiar
to many band aficionados. He's a
prolific composer and arranger
for concert, symphonic and brass
bands, as well as being the owner
of the music publishing company
that bears his name. (See March
10 & 12listings for details of
these concerts.)
Vocalist Kathy TI10mpson joins
the Etobicoke Community
Concert Band in a musical
tribute to Bette Midler on March
24 & 25. Kathy is not only a
wonderful singer, but really looks
the part - she's played Bette
Midler in tribute shows all over
