Next concert: March 31 Sinfonla Toronto Margaret Chasins, spokesperson for Sinfonia Toronto tells us that the new chamber orchestra's first season has been an artistic and box office success. Artistic director, Nurhan Annan, is well into planning next year's series, in addition to which the orchestra will be performing at least one private function and will give a concert in Barrie as well. Next concert: March 12 Via Salzburg T.S.O. percussionist, David Kent, organizer of the series, tells us that it has gone "fantastically'', that all the concerts so far have sold out, all have been broadcast on the CBC, tl1at all the daily newspapers' senior critics have attended and written reviews and tl1at the series has been lucky to receive some good corporate sponsorships. He attributes fuis success to tl1e standard of the playing and tl1e uniqueness of combining tl1e best local musicians with outstanding international talent (somethlng which another highly successful ensemble, Amici, has been doing for some time). Bach, Francis Poulenc, Anton We bern and Ludwig van Beetlloven, and after tl1e concert will participate in a question and answer session witll members oftlle audience in tl1e north lobby of Roy Thomson. PIFFARO 1l1e Toronto Consort will expand our horizons again on the seemingly limitless musical past, introducing Toronto audiences to Piffaro, 1l1e Renaissance Band, on March 24. ll1e music on their program i:; by composers such as Heinrich Isaac, Ludwig Senfl, Heinrich Finck, Paul Hof11eimer and Adam von Fulda, who were all employed at the court of Maximilian I, a great patron of music and ruler of the Holy Roman Empire from 1493 to 1519. Pi !Taro models itself on tl1e wind players who performed the music of tlle time for religious, ceremonial and festive occasions and were known as "Stadtpfeiffer", "town pipers". 1l1e six members ofPiffaro, like tl1eir 15th & 16th century predecessors, are versatile, each being able to play as many as five instnunents. They will be joined by Mack Ramsey, who, though not a regular member of Piffaro, is a specialist in early brass instruments - tlle sackbut, comett and slide trumpet. Piffaro is from the New York- Philadelphia area, where its members are active in performing and teaching early music. Dance OREMUS Musique On March 17 Dance OREMUS 15" Danse will present tlle Boston/ New York dance company, Dances by Isadora, in their Canadian debut, with internationally acclaimed pianists, Sarah Takagi and guest artist, Toronto virtuoso, Li Wang, who last autumn won three gold medals at the first Canadian Chopin Competition. The great dancer/ choreographer, Isadora Duncan wrote " ... we are trying to ... blend together a poem, a melody and a dance so that you will not listen to the music, see the dance or hear the poem, but will live in the scene and the thought that all are expressing."
