Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland
Well, the weather has turned, it has taken at least thirteen weeks and we may well have wet weather for the
school holidays too.
It has been a long Term and the students are tired (as are some of the staff). The holidays will be a time to
relax and recharge our batteries ready for Term Two. This week I did remind the students at the College
assembly that it is only five weeks into Term Two that the first set of examinations hit. Therefore, it will be
important that some revision takes place over the next two weeks. This reminder does align well with our study
programme being distributed this week. ‘The Learning Journey’ is a collection of ideas and thoughts we have
put together to assist our students on their journey to achieving successful outcomes with the examination
process. Please do not hesitate to speak with your Homeroom or Form teacher about revision suggestions.
I had the privilege of attending the opening night of ‘Ka-Pow’, the College Production for 2013. It really was a
highly entertaining and enjoyable experience with a near full house. The audience and performers really did
enjoy the whole performance. Well done to everyone involved. I wish to highlight Ms Adrienne Petre for her
direction, Mr Daniel O’Connor for his expertise with the music and his energy with props and set production.
Other staff involved were Miss Alva McHugh and Mrs Janine Tyler who assisted with directing and I believe
Mr Bill Draper did some painting of props too. A very big thank you, to you all.
I wish to congratulate Gregor Macdonald and the entire McDonald House team for organising our first service
for the year. With over fifty students and staff in attendance last Friday night, we were all surprised just how
much work was achieved. The courtyard area now looks fantastic with fresh mulch and a clean and pruned
look throughout. Thank you to everyone who took part. Remember to support those that donated goods for
this service, below.

Congratulations to everyone involved with the PrEP Market Day on Monday afternoon. It was a
tremendous atmosphere and very much akin to a ‘trading floor’. Within only about twenty minutes,
most of the products had been keenly ‘brought up’ and parents and friends had arms laden with
quality goods. It was a sell out in the end.
I know the children learned a great deal from the experience and we are confident they will be far
more prudent with their hard earned ‘pocket money’ in the future. Special thanks to all the Primary
staff for their patience and perseverance during this very important process.
ANZAC Day this year is during the holiday period. Mrs Leanne Chartrand will be
the staff representative for ACG Sunderland at the Swanson RSA on 25 April at
9.00am (a programme is included at the conclusion of this newsletter.) All
students, parents and staff are encouraged to attend this very important day. The
school Leaders will all be in attendance in school uniform.
The Parents and Friends committee held it’s AGM and reflected on what a tremendous year the
organisation has had. With the completion of the three year project of the sun shades, the quick
completion of the very popular Primary sandpit and not forgetting the highly successful social
functions of the Supersized Picnic, Parents and Friends Breakfasts, Trivial Pursuit nights and the Art
Auction. Much of these successes can be attributed to the leadership of this group. I wish to
publically thank Mr Simon Jaffe for his vision and passion over the past three years as the
Chairmain of the Parents and Friends committee. Thank you Simon, you have accomplished a
great deal during this time.
An election of officers did occur at the AGM and I am pleased to announce that Paula Green and
Kirsty Roby have been elcted Co-Chair of Parents and Friends for 2103. Sonya Eldridge was reelected
Secretary and Denise Mitchell continues a Treasurer. I wish to thank the entire committee
and congratulate the incoming officers.

In conclusion, I wish to note the wonderful contribution Mrs
Cathy Warden has made to the life of Sunderland since it’s
inception 2007. She has been instrumental in much of the
culture and traditions that Sunderland holds dear now. We
wish her all the best in her new endeavours.
I wish to also wish Miss Rebecca O’Donnell all the very best
with her Spanish Educational Scholarship and her OE too.
We held a special assembly this morning to farewell the Mrs
Warden and Miss O’Donnell, students read poetry, gave
flowers and their were loud House chants. Both these staff

Homework Revision, revision, revision.
This year started off with a bang, getting straight into a great Term of learning. Our first House event,
Swimming Sports, set the mood for the Term to come, with fantastic participation and fun had by all.
With hardly a week in between, the House spirit was in full swing once again with Athletics Day producing a
highly competitive yet supportive atmosphere, perfectly complemented by the warm, sunny weather. Both
Primary and College got really involved and it was great to see everyone’s cheering their House on and
participating.
This Term our school sports teams have put in all their best efforts to produce some fantastic results. The
stand-out being the Cricket Team coming first in their competition, Orienteering making it to the sprint finals,
and Tomas Mendes making it to the Maddi Cup and coming fifteenth in New Zealand .
This year’s Supersize Picnic was a great success, with a huge turnout and everyone enjoying the many
activities put on. It was great to see the Primary and College getting into the activities and helping each other.
A continuation of one of many House events has seen every House put forward their strongest players to
compete in Dodgeball for the prestige of humiliating their teachers in a staff vs students game, hoping to
continue the students lead of 2-0.
The holidays are a time for review of the Term’s work in preparation for the Term Two mock examinations.

Dean’s Report
It has been a long thirteen-week Term and very busy, filled with
lots of activities and programmes for the children. We have such
fantastic children at ACG Sunderland who have really worked hard
this term, stayed focused on their work, and who have also shown
values of respect and kindness to their friends.
Our students have worked hard on PrEP (Primary Enterprise
Program) and this culminated in a fantastic Market Day on Monday. Thank you to the busy mums
and dads in our community who were able to make it to our Market Day. It was a great opportunity
to have a look at and purchase some of the great products our students have made to help the
environment. All stalls sold out very quickly so you had to be fast to grab a bargain. The children
have spent the week reflecting on their learning in Financial Literacy and the Primary staff hope to
ascertain who was the most entrepreneurial!
On 25 April, ANZAC Day all students of ACG Sunderland are invited to come along and march in
the ANZAC parade, meeting at 8:45am at Swanson School to Swanson RSA. Please wear your
winter uniform if you are able to come and look for me once you are there. Don’t forget to bring a
poppy!
Over the holidays I know many students will be reviewing their work in preparation for the internal
Science, Math and English examinations. These will be for Year Five and Six students in Week
Five of Term Two. Students need to take the time to go over your notes and jot down any questions
they might have to ask the teacher on their return. Please also take a look at ‘The Learning
Journey’ for study skills you may not be aware of.
The College Production, ‘Kapow’ was a real treat on Wednesday and Thursday evening. Huge
congratulations to the cast of students and the staff who worked hard to make it a success. Well
done!
I have been invited to the grand premier of “Up the Creek”; a stream restoration comedy directed by

Community Waitakere Staff member, Simon Grant. This video was filmed at the end of 2012 with
some ACG Sunderland students and I will be first in line to purchase a DVD of the film to share with
the Primary. Other groups who took part in the film were Wai Care staff, West Auckland Historical
Society, Henderson Primary School and Flanshaw Road School. A special viewing will be held in
early in Term Two for interested students.
We finished the Term with our Citizen Assembly and I felt
very proud looking at the students who were awarded this
certificate. Pictured with Mr Villars is the group of
recipients, Benny, Jack, Oliver, Victoria, Amelia and Jake.
Well done.
Do not forget Book Week is week Two in Term Two and
on Tuesday that week we will hold our Book Parade.
Please come in that day wearing a costume of your
favourite book character! Put your thinking caps on and
be creative as our librarian, Mrs Davies, may have prizes to give out on the day!

Weetbix Tryathlon
On Sunday, 14 April, an enthusiastic group of students (twenty-three Primary and three College)
participated in the Weetbix TRYathlon, which was held on the North Shore.
It was a fantastic day out and it was great to see everyone try their best! For many children, this
was their first time competing in such an event and I know that from everyone’s smiles afterwards,
that they really enjoyed their experience.
The following children competed as an individual competitor and did the three (swim, cycle, run)
disciplines: Oliver Farley-Wilson, Mackenzie McElroy, Tyler Glenn, Joshua Winson, Tegan
Folwell, Nikita Gill, Jake Hynds, Victoria Mitchell, Lauren Mitchell, Mia Price, Briarna Higgs,
Max Ogden, Vanessa-Rose Schonknecht, Amelia Earley, Emma Farley-Wilson, Toby Duff,
Sophie and Hope Adams.

Basketball
ACG Sunderland Blazers played Holy Cross Lakers and lost 10-23. Player of the Day went to Daniel
Abdul for showing great competitive spirit and giving it everything he had. This was a tough game but
the team kept their heads up. Well done to Tyler Glenn for scoring our 10 points.
ACG Sunderland Heat played Ranger All Stars and lost 0-22. Player of the Day went to Yong Yu Xian
for her diligence around the court and some very good hustling.
Football
The Sunderland Waitemata10 th Grade Football played Te Atatu Colts at McLeod Park and drew their
first game and won the second. Player of the Day went to Leo Larsen for excellent play all around the
field and for scoring two great goals.
The Sunderland Waitemata 9 th Grade Football had a two all draw game. Player of Day went to Max
Ogden for outstanding goal and determination.
The Sunderland Waitemata 7th Grade Football Team, coached by College students Bradley
Andrews, Hannah Fernandez and Paige Robson, had a game in the weekend. Player of the Day went
to Connor McConnell (pictured with cup and certificate).

With the weather against us, we knew we had to dig deep to get a good placing at the Auckland
Secondary Schools Team Relays held at Ambury Regional Park, Mangere Bridge. We were not
disappointed with the efforts!
Our Senior Girls team; Jessica Sampson, Alisha Hart and Hannah Sampson placed fourth out of
nineteen teams. Well done girls. Our Senior Boys team of Patrick Newland, James Newland and
Jayden Chapman were placed in the middle of the group as were their Intermediate Boys; Jayden
Chapman, Rowan Hart and Harrison Ng.
Ambury Park is a tough course and
not very forgiving, Jayden smashed
his arm on some rocks but kept
running to the end, well done
Jayden (we have since learnt that
he has broken his arm and is in
plaster up past his elbow).
We had some very impressive
individual times for the 4.4km
course.

relay team. The boys started well with Alex Tonkin taking the lead early but unfortunately we had a couple of swimmers
