From the desk of. . . . . . . . . . . . . . Nathan Villars, Principal
Dear Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland
I’ve just got off my bike, it is 7.30am and the Cycle Team had another fantastic training session in the
foothills of the Waitakere. Ranges. I cannot believe this weather, it is just so warm still.
Over the last two nights the school has been open for our traditional Term One Parent/Teacher Interviews. I do
hope the process was positive and you got a great deal from the staff contact. Once again I remind parents
that all staff are more than happy to discuss your child’s learning at a mutually convenient time; please do not
hesitate to make another appointment if you did not cover all you wished to. Another initiative for 2013 was the
mail out of the PAT documentation. I know a number of you used these documents as a discussion point for
the interviews. If you want more clarification of these documents, please do not hesitate to contact Lawrence
Stephens. His email address is lawrence.stephens@acgedu.com
Last Saturday I had the opportunity to witness our Senior Cricket Team defeat Lynfield College Second XI by
one run. By doing this, they have become the grade champions. Well done to the Team and parent support
and a huge thank you to Mr Stephens for his energy and enthusiasm in building our cricket culture at the school
so quickly and effectively. What a wonderful atmosphere on the side-line too with such supportive parents.
Congratulations to our young Orienteering team. Hannah Sampson, James Newland, Jayden Chapman
and Jessica Sampson and Jackson Hurihanganui have made it through to the Auckland Regional Sprint
Semi-Finals to be held at Manukau Tech and the Finals to be held at Massey University, Albany in the
afternoon. We wish the four all the best on the day.. The team of ten students; Hannah Sampson, James
Newland, Alisha Hart, Jayden Chapman, Harrison Ng, Rowan Hart, Jessica Sampson, Jackson
Hurihanganui, Euan Macdonald and Brennan Sampson, have all come in the top twenty for their age
groups.
Parents and Friends AGM
Monday, 8 April at 7.15pm
Boardroom

The feedback from students and staff alike with regards our most recent ‘Shakespeare As You Write
It’ performance has been overwhelming. Students from Year Six study Shakespeare at Sunderland
and this performance gave such a positive insight into the sometimes difficult language of this era.
Everyone was pleased with the performance and outcome. Well done to the English Department for
making this happen.
Another reminder of the annual Parents and Friends of ACG Sunderland AGM meeting on
Monday, 8 th April at 7.15pm in the Boardroom.
Parents and Friends was designed to support and help resource the College and Primary school
with the extra resources required to help our children grow and to build a tight community of
Parents. This primarily is for our children and future students of our fine school.
We have developed a strong community culture amongst the parents of ACG Sunderland over the
years and raised a considerable amount of money, the highlight has been the purchase and fitting of
the shade areas around the campus. We have successfully hosted events like Parents and Children
Supersize Picnic, the Chamber of Arts, Trivial Pursuit Evenings, Hot Dog Days, Cup Cake Days and
our annual Parents and Friends Breakfast.
With this strong community spirit in mind, would you like to stand for Chairperson of this
group? If you are interested please contact me before the AGM.
I do hope like me you spend some quality time with family and friends over the Easter break and I
look forward to catching up with you all on Wednesday next week.
Quote of the Week - Prepare
“Each minute you spend in preparation saves at least five to ten minutes worth of catching up. Get
out ahead of yourself. Prepare for what is coming next. When opportunities come your way they
won’t wait until you to get ready for them. You must already be prepared to meet the challenges and
quickly seize those opportunities, or they’ll leave you behind.
Preparation makes the difference between merely offering empty promises and really being able to
deliver. Those who are prepared can deliver right away. Those who are not can only try. Guess who
comes out on top!
What can you do right now to prepare for tomorrow? Each day, every time you can, make the extra
effort to better prepare yourself. It is time well invested, which begins to pay dividends almost
immediately. Prepare ahead, work ahead, and you’ll surely get ahead.”- Ralph Marston
Aspire. Respect. Succeed.
Value of the Week - Preparedness (Week Eleven)
The word prepare is an action word; a verb. Prepare literally means to make ready in
advance. So to have a habit of making things ready in advance is to literally live “ahead of the
game.”
“The best preparation for tomorrow is to do today’s work superbly well” ~William Olser
To shower the night before, have your clothes ready and beside with your schoolbag and tech
equipment set by the door is to place your tomorrow in a successful position before you ever enter
into it. Setting your goals before bed and eating a balanced breakfast in the morning prepares your
mind to actually reach the results you want. Sounds simple right? Well these are basic elements of
success that are commonly overlooked by the average person. In order to express your full
potential you must fully understand the importance of preparation and making it a habit.

McDonald House ‘Sunderland on Service’ for Term One
ARE YOU PREPARED?
On Friday 12 th April after school, there will be a service taking place between the patch of grass from
the Art classes and the College Maths classes. There will be lots of jobs needing to be done such as
weeding and putting down bark. For students interested in taking part in this activity it would be
appreciated if you could bring anything from home that could help (e.g. gloves, spades). Outdoor
shoes are essential, people wearing things such as sandals and school shoes will not be able to
participate. If there is a sufficient amount of people getting involved with the service there will be a
sausage sizzle as well. See Gregor for details. Thank you for support in advance.
Primary Dean’s Report
I was so pleased reading many wonderful reports that went home last Friday. We have such fantastic
children at ACG Sunderland who try very hard all the time to be respectful of others, focus on their
work, and their friends. Thank you to the busy mums and dads in our community who were able to
make it to our Parent/Teacher Interviews on Wednesday night. It was a great opportunity to touch
base with classroom teachers and discuss your child’s work habits and attitudes at school. If you
weren’t able to attend please contact your child’s teacher and book an appointment time that suits you
both.
ACG Sunderland Primary has been invited to take part in an Art project along the Henderson Stream
behind our school. Project Twinstreams has won funding for students to participate in contributing an
art project and helping to beautify our adopted streambank. They have invited ACG Sunderland to be
a part of this great project. Stay tuned for more information about this in Term Two.
Year Six were lucky
enough to attend an
interactive show
about Shakespeare’s
plays alongside some
college students on
Wednesday. It was a
terrific performance
and really added to
the students’
enjoyment and
understanding of this
wonderful playwright!
Don’t forget Good Friday 29 March as well as Monday 1st April and Tuesday 2nd April are holidays for
ACG Sunderland. I hope the Easter bunny finds his way to your home! Enjoy a little break and we
will see you again on 3 April. Stay safe and have a super rest!
A reminder to parents that Term Two, students will come to school in their winter uniform. The hours
for the Second-hand Uniform Shop during the holidays are to de decided but we will certainly let you
know in plenty of time. To purchase new, the Uniform Shop / ISC Lenco The Schoolwear Shop on
I am really pleased to be back after a year’s maternity leave and I am ready to roll up my sleeves and
get involved in all the projects the pupils are busy creating!
Year Seven are designing and making a desk tidy for a particular client using different types of wood
based materials. Students can’t wait to get into the workshop and get started!
Year Eight are researching various metals so that they can create a ‘Mini Monster’ sculpture based on a
scary creature theme such as insects, dinosaurs, etc.
‘Automata’ is the theme for Year Nine this Term. They are looking into mechanisms and motion to create
an automaton - a mechanical toy. The pupils have been busy making various prototypes to see how
their toy will work and it’s proving to be challenging yet lots of fun!
The Year Ten students are learning about the importance of advertising and promoting. This is an
interesting topic which has proved to be a real hit! They are producing a computer game based on a
cartoon character they have created. It will be scanned and manipulated using Photoshop. Then they
will make a display stand in order to promote it.
Year Eleven are starting their IGCSE Design coursework which is 50% of their final grade. They have to
produce a graphic product which can vary from a board game to packaging. At the moment they are
researching in order to start designing their product. So far I am really impressed with their perseverance
and determination. It’s a big step up from Year Ten.
This is the first year that A2 level Design has run at ACG Sunderland and I think they have developed
into a creative and motivated class of budding young designers. They are busy developing their ideas
from AS Design and starting to realise their final product!
Sunderland vs Lynfield 2 nd XI
Sunderland batted first against the best bowling attack we have faced all season scoring 112/6.
,Patrick Cook leading from the front with 67. In reply Sunderland bowled accurately but struggled to
take wickets, a few catches going down didn’t help. Lynfield needed 6 off the last over with 5 wickets
in hand, Patrick Cook taking responsibility to bowl the over as Captain. The six balls went like this; 1
run, wicket (caught and bowled), wicket (bowled), 1 run, 1 run, 1 bye. A win to Sunderland by one
run! This means we win the Senior B grade, going unbeaten throughout the term..
Leading players for the season
Patrick Cook – Scored 243 runs at an average of 48.6
Mehul Patel – Scored 169 runs at an average of 56.3 and 4 wickets at an average of 20.5 and
conceding 5.4 runs an over.
