<strong>Our</strong> <strong>2012</strong> <strong>Academic</strong> Year comes to an end and I wish to inform you of the organisation for next year.<br />

Please find enclosed information pertaining to the incoming year and should you require further<br />

information, Catherine Ferguson will be back at school from Monday, 7 January <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

The staff and I are very excited about the coming school year as we have many fantastic events and<br />

opportunities organised for our students.<br />

Staffing Positions in <strong>2013</strong><br />

o Lawrence Stephens has been promoted to the position of Deputy Principal.<br />

o Cathy Warden will be mentoring the Dean’s programme in the school and she will<br />

oversee the Year 7 to Year 9 cohort with Stephen Demanuele covering Year 10 to<br />

Year 13.<br />

o Paul Devereux is the Mathematics Curriculum Coordinator.<br />

<br />

New Staff<br />

o Kristin Terry I am very pleased to introduce our Year One Teacher for <strong>2013</strong>. Miss<br />

Kristen Terry will join the Primary staff teaching our Year One class as well as Art to<br />

the whole Primary. Kristen has obtained a Bachelor of Arts, Double Major in<br />

Psychology and Education, Certificate in Applied Leadership, Graduate Diploma in<br />

Teaching. Having taught Year One and Two’s, she is very much looking forward to<br />

teaching here.<br />

Business Studies will be taught by Alva McHugh. Alva will be a quality addition to<br />

the Social Science Department. She is not shy of study with First in Class Honours<br />

Degrees for Professional Diploma in Education, Bachelor of Corporate Law and<br />

Honours in Masters Advanced Language Skills alongside a wealth of teaching<br />

experience.<br />

In English we have Margaret Rasmussen joining Janine Tyler and Stephen<br />

Demanuele. Margaret lives and breathes English; she is going to compliment the<br />

Department immensely. Margaret has a Bachelor of Arts (Double Major, English and<br />

Education), Postgraduate Diploma in Teaching (English, Social Science and Drama)<br />

and a Postgraduate Diploma in Education. She is an experienced teacher in all<br />

facets of English.<br />

o Sarah Graham joins the Science Department with great enthusiasm. A central

Southland import to Auckland, Sarah comes to Sunderland with Bachelor of Science<br />

in Biochemistry and a Postgraduate Diploma in Science (Forensic Science), a Masters<br />

in Science (Forensic Science) and finally a Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Science<br />

and Biology). Sarah will be a fantastic addition to our Science Department.<br />

Michelle Ngoh joins Sunderland in the Mathematics Department. With a Bachelor of<br />

Science, majoring in Mathematics, Dynamics and Statistics as well as a Postgraduate<br />

Diploma in Physical Education (PE and Mathematics), Michelle has taught all levels<br />

of Cambridge Mathematics. She loves Badminton and is a keen sportswoman.<br />

The first school day is Wednesday 23 th January for all year levels.<br />

Students are to be in full summer uniform and have pen and paper for Wednesday only. Students will<br />

be on their full timetable from Thursday 24 th January onwards.<br />

College:<br />

Class lists will be read out at assembly.<br />

students are not to go to classrooms or locker areas.<br />

Tutor Meetings<br />

Homeroom / Tutor Teachers will be in touch to organise a 15‐30 minute interview during the day over<br />

the 21 and 22 January <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

The objective of this meeting is for your child to set goals and to initiate a relationship with the<br />

teachers.<br />

The annual tuition fees for <strong>2013</strong> have been set and an invoice will be mailed out in January. If you have<br />

Stationery and Text Books<br />

The stationery and text book requirements for <strong>2013</strong> are to be found on the University Book Shop<br />

website www.ubsacg.co.nz. For Years Seven to Ten all subjects are compulsory, for Years Eleven to<br />

Thirteen students should only purchase textbooks for the options they are taking. Please contact the<br />

Assistant Principal Lawrence Stephens on lawrence.stephens@acgedu.com for confirmation of options.<br />

A stationery list is attached for your information.<br />

Staff<br />

Please find attached a list of staff for <strong>2013</strong> and their area of teaching/responsibility.<br />

Students Own IT Equipment<br />

In <strong>2012</strong>, the campus became wireless with Staff and Students utilising this function with the use IT<br />

devices being used during the learning process in the College. This will continue in the College in <strong>2013</strong>.<br />

This will include Smart Phones, iPads, Laptops.<br />

The following protocols apply:<br />

‐ No ipod/music players are to be used within class time<br />

‐ No use of texting/calling functions within the class


‐ No connection with any social networking sites while on site at ACG Sunderland<br />

‐ <strong>Our</strong> current cyber safety agreement will apply to all devices used at school “I understand that<br />

these rules apply to any privately owned ICT or equipment/device (such as a laptop, mobile<br />

phone, USB drive)I bring to school or school related activity. Any images or material on such<br />

equipment/devices must be appropriate to the school environment.”<br />

‐ School will take no responsibility for electronic devices students bring to school<br />

‐ Electronic devices must not be left at school overnight<br />

‐ For <strong>2013</strong> Primary students are not permitted to bring devices to school and this process will be<br />

reviewed.<br />

<strong>Parents</strong> have begun to engage with us with regards the types of devices, we are suggesting you contact<br />

Mr Lawrence Stephens to discuss suitable options.<br />

Uniforms<br />

In the Primary, the boys summer short‐sleeved white shirt is preferred with a complete phase out of<br />

the blue polo shirt by 20<strong>14</strong>.<br />

We also have made it compulsory for students in Year One to Year Ten to have the Sunderland<br />

Tracksuit as part of their uniform. Senior students taking Physical Education must have a Tracksuit as<br />

part of their PE uniform.<br />

For new uniform requirements, please contact the ISC Lenco Schoolwear Shop, 80 Railside Henderson,<br />

phone 838 6164. The usual shop hours are Monday to Friday, 9.00am to 5.00pm. Saturday from<br />

10.00am to 4.00pm. The shop will be open up to and including Monday, 24 <strong>December</strong> 9.00am to<br />

3.00pm then reopens on 3 January 9.00am to 5.00pm and usual shop hours apply. Prices have<br />

changed and I attach a new price list for your information.<br />

We do have a number of second‐hand uniforms for sale here at ACG Sunderland. The Second‐Hand<br />

Uniform shop is open from Wednesday, 9th January by appointment, please phone reception on 838<br />

7070. Please note that there is eftpos and credit card (2.5% surcharge applies to using credit card)<br />

facilities.<br />

Buses<br />

Please find attached the proposed <strong>2013</strong> Bus Route information.<br />

Enclosed is a form for you to complete if you wish to take up our bus service; please return the form or<br />

email Catherine.ferguson@acgedu.com by the <strong>14</strong> January <strong>2013</strong>. Completion of this form will help<br />

confirm bus routes as well as confirm pick up and drop off points. Bus runs will initially follow the<br />

existing routes as attached.<br />

Bus services will commence from Wednesday, 23 rd January <strong>2013</strong> and buses will be identifiable by having<br />

ACG Sunderland written on them.<br />

Meet the Teacher Evening and Parent Interviews<br />

On Wednesday, 30 January we will hold our annual “Meet the Teacher for College <strong>Parents</strong> and Staff”<br />

and Thursday, 31 January for our “Meet the Teacher for Primary <strong>Parents</strong> and Staff” here at ACG<br />

Sunderland. I encourage parents to attend these evenings in order to meet the teaching staff. A parent<br />

introduction to our learning management system “Blackboard” will also be given on the night.<br />

Open Day Information<br />

The first Open Day is set for Saturday, 16 March, from 10.30am until 2.30pm. This is an opportunity for<br />

the public, friends and family to see the school in action. The other Open Days are set for Saturday 15<br />

June and Saturday 21 September at 10.30am through to 2.30pm.<br />

Should you know of anyone who is interested in bringing their child to Sunderland in the future, we<br />

recommend them coming along to one of our open days.<br />

We will have ten vertical forms for students from Year Eight upwards.<br />

Horizontal Forms<br />

The welfare and care of our students is of paramount importance and for Year Seven students (the<br />

transition year from Primary to College) will be cared for in a horizontal Form Class. All other levels<br />

operate in the Sunderland vertical forms.<br />

Lockers<br />

Students will be allocated a locker during the first week of school. There is a charge of $10 (Year 7, 8 &<br />

13) and $20 (Year 9‐12) for all new students and this will be charged against your child’s account.<br />

Year 7, Year 8 and Year 13 students are allocated lockers where they need to supply their own lock.<br />

Please note we are able to hold a spare key at Reception.<br />

The majority of Year Nine to Year Twelve students are given a key for their locker, which if lost, costs<br />

$20 to replace.


Student Diary<br />

All students will receive an ACG Sunderland which will be invoiced against the students account. The<br />

homework diary is one of the most important pieces of stationery that a student will receive at<br />

Sunderland. It is a student’s personal organiser.<br />

x<br />

Students should enjoy the challenge of their homework. By using the ACG Sunderland Homework Diary,<br />

students will build good work and study habits, as well as sound habits of mind. Such habits will prepare<br />

students not only for successful learning experiences at school but also for their future careers.<br />

Lunch Orders<br />

Lunch orders will be available from the first day of school. Order forms will be available in the<br />

Classrooms. Orders are to be placed in the lunch order box in the class not at reception. Orders will<br />

then be collected and placed with the lunch bar. The lunch order form is available online through<br />

‘Blackboard’.<br />

Before and After School Care<br />

In <strong>2013</strong>, Kids at School Care will only operate after school care at ACG Sunderland, Monday to Friday<br />

from 3.00pm – 5.45pm. Please note at present the morning session is in recess but if you would like to<br />

take this option up please contact Jennie Neville. Enrolment is required and if you wish to express<br />

interest in using this facility please contact Jennie Neville on 021 358 379 for enrolment and fees<br />

information or email jennie.neville@acgedu.com<br />

Kids at School Care also run school holiday programmes with the first beginning on Monday, <strong>14</strong>th<br />

January <strong>2012</strong>.<br />

Students should always remember to aim high and always give their best effort.<br />

I personally wish all ACG Sunderland families a wonderful Christmas and safe holidays with friends and<br />
