ived in San Miguel early in the morning and went to<br />

a hotel where birds sang loudly in a courtyard tree.<br />

After a good huevos rancheros breakfast, we went to<br />

our room for much needed sleep. The next day, we<br />

rented a comfortable house for twenty-five dollars a<br />

month.<br />

On our way home from the bars and restaurants at<br />

night, a gang of young Mexicans followed us and<br />

yelled insults because we were long haired gringos. I<br />

was accustomed to carrying a knife and ready for action.<br />

However, after several nights like that, even<br />

though we were able to avoid violence, we cut our<br />

hair, and I took on a more Poncho Villa look with long<br />

side burns and drooping mustache after I shaved my<br />

beard.<br />

One night, Paul and I ate filet mignon and drank<br />

tequila at a restaurant. We met two charming sisters<br />

from Queretero named Maria and Lupe. A couple of<br />

days later, Paul and I went to Queretero to see them.<br />

After a day of meeting the family, shopping, dining,<br />

visiting the church, and promenading around the<br />

square we took the girls home. As we got ready to<br />

leave, their brother, Raul, told us where the local<br />

brothel was located.<br />

Paul and I liked hiking in the mountains around<br />

San Miguel. One evening, we sat on our rooftop<br />

drinking wine and watching the sun set. I said, “This<br />

is beautiful, but can you imagine what it’s like to see<br />

the sun set into the Pacific? I’ve never seen the Pacific.<br />

Have you?”<br />

“No.” Paul replied.<br />
