to keep me awake during the trip. Paul hitchhiked<br />

to meet me. When I crossed the border, a customs<br />

agent went through my bag and found the bottle<br />

of Benzedrine.<br />

I told him, “I’m a college student. I don’t usually<br />

use drugs, but I had to stay awake during the trip and<br />

keep an eye on my bags so no one could steal them. I<br />

bought the pills legally down there and just forgot to<br />

take them out of my pack. I wasn’t trying to smuggle<br />

it. Please don’t ruin my life.” He gave me a warning<br />

and let me go.<br />

I went to a pawn shop and sold my guitar. Then I<br />

got a good meal. I slept in the bus station on the<br />

Mexican side for a couple of days waiting for Paul.<br />

When he arrived, we took a bus to El Centro, California.<br />

We checked into a cheap hotel and got work picking<br />

asparagus. We came down with Montezuma’s revenge<br />

and had a hard time picking in the hot sun. We<br />

only made enough to pay for our room and meals. We<br />

saw the job as a dead end. I made a collect call to<br />

Grandma Minnie in New York, and she wired me a<br />

couple of hundred dollars.<br />

We took a bus to San Francisco to check out the North<br />

Beach beat scene and get some good work. The night<br />

we arrived, we slept sitting in chairs in the bus station.<br />
