Seminole State College Selected to Participate in Students in Service AmeriCorps Grant
Seminole State College has
again been chosen as one of two
community colleges in Oklahoma
to receive the Students in Service
Grant through AmeriCorps. Along
with Western Oklahoma State College
in Altus, SSC will participate
in a program to support part-time
AmeriCorps community service
positions.
Seminole State College will select
three students to be funded
through the Students in Service
(SIS) program. Vice President for
Institutional Advancement Lana
Reynolds said the program recruits
students to volunteer in their communities
– helping to increase the
capacity of local nonprofit agencies
and schools, and meeting critical
community-defined needs.
Reynolds said, “SIS members
help to meet key educational, environmental,
health, economic,
veteran, and social service needs
within their area and across the
nation. These students gain valuable
civic and workforce skills.
By participating in the Students
in Service program, the member
becomes a part of the AmeriCorps
national service network.”
Applicants will be chosen
through an extensive selection
process to include interviews and
background checks. As a part of
the program, students successfully
completing a 300-hour Term
of Service within one year will be
eligible to receive a $1,175 Education
Award. To apply, students
must be enrolled in at least six
hours, be at least 17 years of age,
and a United States Citizen.
This year’s program will engage
150 students in Oklahoma
in tutoring, mentoring, coaching,
providing services to disadvantaged
youth, and hosting service
projects related to the environment
and human services. Nine
campuses have been awarded
sub-grants from the Oklahoma
Campus Compact, Washington
Campus Compact, and the Corporation
for National and Community
Service during 2011-2012.
They include: the University of
Oklahoma, Oklahoma State University,
the University of Oklahoma
– Tulsa, University of Central
Oklahoma, Southeastern Oklahoma
State University, East Central
University, Oklahoma Panhandle
State University, Seminole State
College, and Western Oklahoma
State College. Participating students
on these campuses will contribute
more than 45,000 hours of
service to nonprofit organizations
across the state. Collectively, they
will receive more than $176,250
in education awards.
Reynolds said, “We were pleased
to be selected as one of the higher
education institutions in Oklahoma
to participate in the program.
Helping students develop an interest
in community volunteerism is
an important part of their educational
experience. It is exciting to
participate in a national program
which will encourage and reward
students for their volunteer efforts.
Additionally, their service through
the grant program will provide
much-needed help for organizations
in our area.”
“Dr. Gasparro came to SSC just
Lloyd Peever played baseball at
LSU in 1992 and had one of the best
years a pitcher has ever had for a
Tiger baseball team. A transfer to
LSU from Seminole State College,
he assembled a perfect 14-0 record
with an earned run average of just
1.97 and was named National Player
of the Year by Collegiate Baseball
Magazine and first team All-American
by both the American Baseball
Coaches Association and Baseball
America Magazine. He helped lead
the Tigers to a 50-16 record as they
won the SEC championship before
losing in the NCAA Regional
Tournament, just short of a College
World Series berth.
Peever, a native of the Ada area,
was a 1989 graduate of Ada High
School where he lettered in baseball
and football and contributed to state
championships in both sports during
his senior campaign. He attended
Seminole State College and played
for former Trojan baseball Coach
Lloyd Simmons during the 1990 and
1991 seasons, compiling a record
of 25-2 and earning Junior College
All-American honors. Both years,
the Trojans were Region II and District
Champions and advanced to the
JUCO World Series in Grand Junction,
Colo., where they finished 3rd
and 9th in the nation.
While at Seminole, Peever was
also recognized as an outstanding
academic student and served as student
editor of the SSC Collegian.
After graduating with honors from
SSC, Peever transferred to LSU
where he played on the 1992 championship
team. He received a bachelor’s
degree in psychology from
LSU in 1996.
Peever was drafted by the Colorado
Rockies in the fourth round
and played six years in their organization,
before an arm injury ended
his career. Currently, he works for
GlaxoSmithKline and is owner of
OuterSpaces, LLC.
Now married to Livingston Parish
