Waverley College
Cadet Unit
Centenary of Foundation

F r o m t h e H e a d m a s t e r
It is with great excitement and pride that
I begin my second year as the leader of the
Waverley College community. Following
an engaging year of listening to a wide
range of views about and experiences of
life at Waverley College, we are about to
embark on a journey of transformation
and improvement which will enhance our
strong reputation in the community.
I have been privileged to consult with
parents, Old Boys, students and staff about our strengths and
challenges as an educational community. Four things have
emerged as key to our future:
? To continue our proud, successful educational tradition as an
inclusive independent Catholic school in the Edmund Rice
tradition, engaging with the broader community through
educational leadership, outreach and relationship building.
? To provide meaningful opportunities for staff, students and
parents to lead and work together in a climate of respect,
affirmation, flexibility and collaboration, supported by a
clear understanding of roles, conditions and responsibilities.
? To develop and establish a Learning Innovation Paradigm
which will transform the ways in which all learning and
teaching is viewed and supported in our Pre-School, Junior
and Senior Schools
With Old Boy General Peter Cosgrove AC, MC
at the Centenary of Foundation Reville Mess
? To prudently and proactively manage
and build our resource base so that
our inclusive, transformative learning
goals remain at the forefront of our
mission as a Catholic school.
I have thoroughly enjoyed working with
many individuals and groups in reaching
these conclusions. Everything I have
experience during my first year – engaged
student learning, a dedicated staff, a strong co-curricular and
sporting tradition, a challenging Social Justice program,
committed parent involvement and lasting connections between
Old Boys and the College – are further proof of this. The most
important reality for me is the fact that we identify ourselves
unapologetically as a Catholic School, celebrating together,
forming just leaders for the future and responding to the needs
of others. I invite you to visit our website and click on the link
The Future of Learning at Waverley for further information on
these directions.
Waverley College values relationships built on hope and trust.
Our goal is to liberate the potential of every learner. I am grateful
for your ongoing support of the college.
Immersion to India N o v e m b e r - D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 0
At the end of last year a colleague, Dane
Inman and I headed off to Kolkata. The
trip was a reconnaissance mission. We
were to visit projects that Waverley
College might consider helping through
fund-raising. The possibility of future
immersions for students was also
discussed. I had been to Kolkata before
but Dane had not. He was immediately
caught off-guard by the noise, pollution
and the sheer busyness of the city. Twenty
two million people inhabit the city during
business hours! We visited the city
garbage dump which is home to 5000
people. The people survive by picking
through the garbage and selling what they
can. There is one water pump and no
toilets. We were both traumatized at what
we saw. We hope to help build a school
and clinic here.
We were very fortunate to visit Arunachal Pradesh on the Tibetan
border. The Christian Brothers have a school here which
Waverley helped fund. The plight of women in this very isolated
community is heart breaking. Girls as young as 10 years old are
traded for livestock. Polygamy is common
as is domestic violence. The Brothers,
through education, are helping to change
entrenched sexist attitudes. One young
brother runs a Women's Empowerment
Group. I was invited along to a meeting.
Enough to say that I'll never complain
about my life again!!
Our travel guide, Br Ralph, exposed us to
lots of projects that the Brothers have set
up. Edmund Rice would be so proud of
these men who literally dedicate their
lives to making a difference to the most
materially poor people on the planet.
The hospitality we received from the
Brothers everywhere we went was just
wonderful. They also counselled us and
put things in perspective at the end of
another harrowing day. The trip was exhausting, both physically
and emotionally. It has certainly 'disturbed' me but that was its
purpose….
th
On Tuesday 11 of January 2011 25 students from years 10,
11 and 12 and 4 staff members, Mr. Boyd, Mr. Banboukjian,
Mr. McCallum and Mr. Ryan boarded an Air New Zealand
flight bound for Christchurch and 13 days of activities which
concluded with a week long cricket festival held at Nelson
College.
First stop on the tour was the beautiful Queenstown. Here the
tour party enjoyed the outdoor adventures of Jet boating,
white water rafting and some very competitive luge racing.
The tour then moved up the west coast to experience a guided
walk on the Fox glacier.
Nelson was the next stop with four games being played over 5
days at sunny Nelson. The senior team won 2 of the 4 games
with Andrew Coles and Daniel Kitto performing with the bat
and Harry James with the ball. The development team also
won 2 of 4 games with Samuel Fassos picking up a hat-trick in
the final victory.
A ferry ride to Wellington had some feeling a little green
around the gills before the return flight to smiling parents on
rd
Sunday 23 January. All boys and staff had a great time. The
boys were complimented on their appearance and behaviour
at many places around the South Island.
Special thanks to the staff who attended this tour including
Mr. James Maloney who had to remain behind awaiting the
birth of his second child. Their hard work with fund raising,
putting together the tour booklet and collecting all the paper
work over a 12 month period as well as outfitting the tour
group was very much appreciated. The parents who helped
raise the funds to make this tour a memorable one for the
boys deserve a big thank you.
I hope the tour has given the boys a sense of what gems lie
beyond our shores for possible future adventures.
Mr. John W Boyd, Tour Organiser
New Zealand Cricket Tour January 2011
achievements in sport over the last twelve months with some
excellent achievements. Not only did our Basketballers travel to the
USA for a tour, our cricketers also ventured over to New Zealand.
There have been some excellent individual performances and
representative honours recently that are worth congratulations.
These include:
? Jed Holloway being selected for the 2010
Australian Schoolboys Rugby tour of the
South Pacific
? 2011 School Captain Nicholas Brbot being
selected for both the NSW and Australian
BASKETBALL TOUR December 2010
On Thursday 2nd December 2010, 36 students, two parents and six
staff members departed on Air Canada flight AC 33 bound for
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. Our 14 hour flight went
smoothly, with everyone enjoying the individual touch screens and
the multiple movies available.
We arrived to a chilly 3°C winter day and were greeted by our host
and coach driver, Ron. Ron took us across the Canada/USA border
crossing, towards our first few nights in Clackamas, Oregon. Our 10
hour coach trip took us through British Columbia, Washington State
and into Oregon State. Here we stayed at the Sunnyside Motel
located near the Clackamas Town Centre.
Our first games of basketball were against Centennial High School; a
5A ranking school. Here we had the opportunity to stretch our legs
and put into practice all our hard work from training. Unfortunately,
all teams suffered significant losses, to a school that competes in 66
different sports.
Our next games were against Portland Adventist Academy. Here we
were treated to wonderful renditions of the national anthems and
the tone was set. Unfortunately again, both the Junior Varsity and
Varsity teams lost, to very well drilled teams that train five days a
week.
gym, as we again experienced defeat against a well drilled school.
Despite this, our team spirit was good as always and the after game
meal was sensational and the conversation between players and
other members of families helped to enlighten some Canadians
about Australia.
Burnaby South Secondary School hosted our next games. This was
difficult again against another 5A school. All teams tried their best;
unfortunately our opposition was just too good.
While at St Thomas Aquinas High School, all players went to classes
to experience the Canadian education system. Some went to
Biology class to dissect frogs; others to math; while some went to
home economics to bake cookies. After lunch, the entire school
attended the Freshman game, with the Waverley team cruising to
victory.
From Vancouver we travelled to Pemberton Secondary School, north
of Whistler. This town was nestled in a valley surrounded by large
snow covered mountains. Again the whole school packed into the
gymnasium to watch the Junior Varsity team secure victory. All
Waverley teams registered success against Pemberton.
In Yakima, Washington State, the players embarked on their first of a
two night homestay with the Riverside Christian School. Some
stayed in the well equipped barn of a large orchard farm, while
others experienced a 'normal' family setting. Everyone was excited
about their experiences while on homestay. Friendships were made
and gifts exchanged. Adam Danckert (Tour Captain) was
interviewed and appeared on the local television network. Better
still, some basketball wins were achieved by the Freshman and
Varsity teams.
When departing Yakima, the weather began to change as we headed
north towards Seattle. Snow began to fall and the countryside was
blanketed in white. Our next games were against Cedar Park
Christian School, north of Seattle. The hospitality was warm and the
basketball competition tough. The Freshman team posted a win,
while the other teams again tasted defeat against faster and more
athletic teams.
The Freshman team recorded another win the following day against
Eastside Academy. Here we played in a brand new basketball facility
against students who had been given another opportunity to
complete their high school education.
Our next games also included another homestay with the families of
Northwest Christian High School. Again the competition was tough,
but the experiences while on homestay helped to ease the losses.
Here some players went 'zip lining' on a giant flying fox through the
snow covered woods in the family backyard after midnight, while
others cruised into town and visited Wal-Mart.
From Seattle we again headed north to cross the border and onto
Vancouver. Here we played West Vancouver Secondary School on
their warm-up court, as their 3,500 seat show court was being
refurbished. Luckily they could not fit as many spectators into the
Other important highlights of the tour included: attending the
Portland Trailblazers verse LA Clipper NBA game at the Rose Garden
Arena; a private meeting with Patrick Mills (Australian Boomers and
Trailblazers point guard); watching the Vancouver Giants take on the
Swift Broncos in an ice hockey match; visiting the Pike Place Markets
in Seattle and the Granville Island Markets in Vancouver; and our
'R n R' activities at Whistler Blackcomb.
The Freshman team was coached by Mr Dean Papandreas and
included: Dylan Deep-Jones, Patrick Kava, Oliver Kimpton, Nicolas
Lucas, Francisco Lacoumette, Jack Ryan, Sebastian Rao, William
Anderson, Adrian Bokolis, Fred Giutronich, Kristos Kavrakoudis and
Djordie Krajcic.
The Junior Varsity team was coached by Mr Tony Montano and
included: Timothy Kastengren, Jackson Tate, Dylan Sweeney, Tom
Chamberlain, Ryan Azzopardi, Xavier Mahady, Jackson Farley, Peter
Panagopoulos, Billy Wright, Sam Johnson, John Hetreles and Dejan
Nakic.
The Varsity team was coached by Mr Greg Radford and included:
Christian Terry, John Sommerville, Callum O'Callaghan, Anthony
Bosnar, Oscar Heidrich, Patrick Duffy, James Sekhas, Ryan Dorian,
Patrick Byrne, Haydn Johansson, Adam Danckert and Nicholas Psaltis.
Everyone thoroughly enjoyed their time away. Waverley Basketball
improved with all players gaining valuable experience and insight
into to how the American and Canadian teams train and play ball.
Thank you to all parents and sponsors who made this trip possible
and especially to the boys, Mrs Robyn O'Callaghan, Mrs Maria
Sommerville, Ms Debbie Grigson, Ms Prue Garrod, Dean, Tony and
Greg who took part in this unforgettable experience with me.
KEVIN RICE (OAM)
1932 - 2011
Extracts from SMH 13.1.11
Kevin Rice was more than just a great architect. His
horizons extended beyond mere buildings - however
expertly and inventively designed - to conservation and
commercial harmony.
The legacy of his career in Sydney, which began when he returned from
London in 1960, was a city with buildings the likes of the HSBC Tower
(previously Coopers & Lybrand) in George Street and the Zenith Centre
in Chatswood, and others such as the Queen Victorian Building, restored
from a dilapidated state to become heritage gems. Other major projects
include the Sacred Heart Hospice in Darlinghurst and Liverpool Hospital.
Kevin James Rice was born in Waverley on June 8, 1932, the only child
of a commercial artist, Henry Rice, and a society seamstress, Mercia
(Merle, nee Shea). Rice attended Waverley College and then enrolled at
the University of NSW to study architecture. In 1955, he was one of the
university's first architecture graduates, with honours, then went to work
as an architect in England and Norway. He married an English woman,
Teresa (Terry) Turner-Nash, in London.
In his semi-retirement, Rice was still busy. He was retained by the NSW
Supreme Court as a referee and expert in property and construction
matters, and by the NSW Department of Fair Trading, in 2005, in a
review of licensing in the NSW Home Building Industry. He negotiated
the provisions of the NSW Architects Act on behalf of the profession, and
presided over disciplinary hearings at the Architects Registration Board.
In recent years he was a member of the Heritage Council and the boards
of St Vincent's Hospital and Waverley College (he was still a Board member
and contributed to many alterations to the College buildings and surrounds).
In 2004 he was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) for his
service to architecture.
Kevin Rice is survived by Jillian, his sons Simon, Dominic, Crispin and
Jeremy, stepchildren Campbell and Justine, and 12 grandchildren.
JOHN AUSTIN CHAPMAN (AM)
26/8/1928 - 5/10/10
It was with much regret that the OBU was advised of the
passing of John Chapman on the 5th October last year.
John was a former President of the OBU (1965-67)
John, son of Major General John Chapman (also an ex
Waverley student ) attended the college and subsequently graduated from
Duntroon. John army saw service in Japan and Korea and retired from the
army in 1954. His father's ceremonial sword was presented to the Waverley
College Cadet Unit to be carried by the senior cadet on all ceremonial
parades and the Chapman baton is presented annually to the outstanding
cadet. John then devoted his time to sports administration, in the fields of
swimming, athletics, rugby, cricket and tennis.
He was awarded the Member of the Order of Australia (OAM) in 1979, for
service to the community and in 2004, was appointed a Member of the
Order of Australia (AM) for service to cricket administration. He also
received the Federal Ministerial Sports Encouragement Award, Australian
Sports Medal, and was Senior Vice President, Cricket NSW, Secretary
Waverley Cricket Club, International Rugby Timekeeper Junior Wallabies,
Davis Cup Administrator, President of the NSW Schoolboy's Cricket
Association. John also foundered the Waverley College Rugby Union
Referees Association, the first Australian School to do so. John also worked
Centenary of Foundation Reveille Mess

Saturday 19th February 2011 Sofitel Sydney Wentworth Hotel
In 1985 the Waverley College Cadet Unit
held the first Reveille Mess Dinner. This event
was designed to mark the start of cadet
training for the year, hence the title
“Reveille”, named after the bugle call for the
start of the day.
The dinner brings together the newly
appointed senior ranks of the Unit (Year 12
boys who are Cadet Under Officers or Cadet
Warrant Officers) and their fathers, together
with Old Boys of Waverley College who
served in the senior ranks of the Cadet Unit.
As part of the Cadet Unit's Centenary of
Foundation events the dinner of 2011 was
attended by 350 guests at the The Sofitel
Sydney Wentworth Hotel. Amongst these
was the Unit's Guest of Honour, General
Peter Cosgrove (Ret'd), AC, MC, former
Chief of Defence. General Cosgrove
delivered the Reveille Toast, which followed
Toasts to the Australian Army Cadet Corps
and the Waverley College Cadet Unit.
Following General Cosgrove's address, the
current OC of the Unit, LTCOL (AAC) Peter
Frost, a College contemporary of General
Cosgrove, carried out the “Roll Call”,
assisted by the Unit RSM, Cadet Warrant
Officer Francis O'Neill. The roll call covered a
remarkable span of the ages with former
senior ranks represented from 1947 through
to 2010. Some Cadet Old Boys had travelled
from Europe and Asia to be present on this
occasion. Souvenir “regimental” ties and
Unit cuff links were available for purchase on
the night, and all guests received a souvenir
lapel badge featuring the Unit crest.
Other notable guests on the occasion
included the Headmaster of the College,
Mr. Ray Paxton, The Hon. Mr. Justice Barry
O'Keefe, AM (Ret) and Brother Paul Oakley,
representing the Christian Brothers and
former Headmasters of Waverley College,
whose support for the Unit was so influential
in the continuation of the Cadet Unit.
Current NCOs in the Unit wore historical
uniforms from the Unit's history and a
continuous slide show on a plasma television
provided many guests with some poignant
memories from their past in the Unit.
th
Later in the year, on 18 September, the
Unit will hold its annual Ceremonial Parade.
On this occasion the Unit will receive a new
set of flags, donated by the Old Boys Union

OLD BOYS SOCIAL JUSTICE
In October 2010 two
old boys, John Darvill
and Matt Leo, both
from the class of 2002
travelled to the PNG
highlands to support
the Sisters of Mercy to
establish a maternal
health clinic in the
village of Pundibassa.
The sisters, through their development agency 'Mercy Works Inc.'
have been active in the region supporting the local bishop and
clergy to improve the lives of the people. Pundibassa, five hours
over rough roads from the regional centre of Goroka lacks even
the most basic health service. With support from Mercy Works
the local bishop had acquired a kit home to serve as the basis of a
new clinic. Although labour was plentiful the bishop and the
sisters were worried that local workers lacked the skill and
expertise to complete the job.
Becoming aware of the sisters concerns former teacher and old
boy Michael Elphick, a member of Mercy Works Inc, suggested
approaching the Old Boys. John and Matt, both qualified
builders, made themselves available for two weeks, enough to see
the job all but completed. As is usual in such projects the Old
Boys consider they gained much
more from the experience then they
gave – grateful locals might
disagree.
A second project is in under
consideration, this time a
tuberculosis centre in Timor Leste.
A shared project of Rotary
International and Mercy Works, Old
Boys are again negotiating to send a
team of tradesmen to help with the
build. Expressions of interest from
tradesmen interested in assisting on
this or future projects can contact
Michael Elphick either through the
Old Boys or directly at
LC CLASS 1965- 45TH REUNION
David Rohr, Fr. Ken Cafe
The Class of 1965 held its
45th year reunion at the
Centennial Hotel Woollahra
on the 6th November.
Thirty five Old Boys attended,
this being only the second
reunion since we all finished
at Waverley.
Although the numbers were not as many as the 40th for
various reasons , it was much easier to catch up and talk with
fellow classmates as it commenced at midday and finished quite
late for some . There were quite a few there that had not been
able to get to the first one so I am sure they would have really
enjoyed the afternoon like the rest of us. Miki Pohl got everyone
present to give him a brief description of their profession which
he compilied and sent to us all , which was very interesting to
15
see the varied occupations all
of us have had. Under the
guidance of John Hilton plans
are already underway for the
big one -- our 50th in 2015.
