From the Headmaster
On Thursday evening this week, I was invited
by the Mayor of Waverley, Cr Paul Wakefield (a
Waverley College Pre-School parent), to deliver
the address at the Waverley Council Citizenship
Ceremony. On this night, over fifty people from
a range of backgrounds and countries read the
Pledge of Allegiance to Australia and were officially
welcomed by the Australian Government. It was
a great privilege to be present, to witness the
emotions felt by each person and to experience
the celebratory atmosphere created by friends and
family in attendance.
In my address, I spoke about the contribution of
Waverley College to the region:
“As an independent Catholic school in the Eastern
Suburbs of Sydney, Waverley College shares the
provision of education with other independent
schools, CEO Schools and government schools.
In this context, Waverley is a comprehensive,
inclusive, academically non-selective school which
offers a wide range of courses and co-curricular
opportunities to students from all backgrounds in
our Pre-School, Junior School and Senior School.”
I then spoke about the goals of Waverley College
as described in our Strategic Plan. I mentioned
Waverley boys at
the cutting edge of
learning
Last week, all Year 10
students received brand new
Macbook Air computers as
part of ‘Waverley iLearn’, the
College’s innovative blended
learning program.
Excited students and families
received the laptops at a
special evening where they
were briefed on use and
care of the laptops, security
measures at school and
on public transport, cyber
safety and physical health
when using and carrying the
equipment.
that schools are a reflection of the hopes and
dreams of the broader community. As such, the
goals Waverley College are essentially the goals
and standards – in fact, non-negotiables - for
citizenship. I referred to our commitment as a
school to Beliefs, Innovation, Relationships,
Resources, Environment, Leadership and Life
(BIRRELL). This was expanded to an examination
of how we form each other:
• As people of faith
• As innovative, inspired learners
• As hopeful, proactive resilient people
• As a community prepared to share our
resources with the poor
• As carers of our environment
• As confident, just, compassionate leaders
• As ethical and reverent human beings.
These are my expectations of myself, of all students
and staff, and of familes and friends of Waverley
College. These expectations and standards are the
foundations of good citizenship.
On Sunday 27th, Christians
will celebrate Pentecost,
the feast held 50 days after
Easter. We give thanks to
God for the gift of the Holy
Spirit. The coming of the Holy
Spirit gave courage to the
frightened disciples. They
went out to tell others about
Jesus. The Holy Spirit helps
us to carry on the work of
Jesus and gives us new life.
God of Peace,
We pray that our Church will
be guided by the Holy Spirit
and that all Christians will live
in peace, united by the Holy
Spirit.
We ask this through Christ our
Lord,
Curriculum News: Reviewing and revising
Exams and Revision
It is a busy time of year at Waverley at present with
much of the School doing tests and revision for end of
semester tasks.
Yesterday Mr Paxton and myself taught our three
classes of Year 8 Critical Thinking. We had a fantastic
lesson planned (Of course it was fantastic!) around
watching a clip of the Berlin Wall and getting them
to think about and ask questions using Bloom’s
Taxonomy (see illustration at right).
The aim was to move them from asking simple
‘Remembering’ and ‘Understanding’ questions to
higher levels of questioning involving the skills of
analysis and evaluation. It was well planned, taught
and delivered for most of the day. The Period 6 class,
however, came in after just completing a test and for
the first 5-10 minutes the chatter was about, “What did
you write for that question?”, “Did you think the test
was hard?”, “How do you think you went?”. Both of
us laughed because we were observing the flow-on
effects of the assessment period and instead of diving
into the lesson we let them talk about the test that
seemed more important to them than the lesson on
the Berlin Wall.
We eventually got to the lesson, but on reflection
realized how keen this class was to discuss the test.
These boys were keen. In a few weeks these tests
will be marked and passed back to the boys to find out
how they went and then begin the next cycle of exams
and revision next term.
Assessment and Exam Week is a new process at
Waverley this year for Years 7-10 and as part of
this process teachers and Heads of Department will
discuss how things went and what could be improved
for the end of the year. One of the things I want
to discover is what makes this class so eager for
learning and results so that we can spread this to
other classes in Year 8 and the school.
I would be happy to hear from any parents either by
email or phone on their thoughts around exams and
revision at Waverley.
Last week I spoke to a Year 7 parent who wanted to
know what their son needed to study for the exams.
Each department summarises this information and it
is placed on EWave, the internal school portal that all
boys and parents have access too. Any parent can
access this information using their son’s login details.
Year 12 Reports and Academic
Progress
As we go to press the Year 12 Reports are being
printed, signed and mailed out to parents. This is an
important time for Year 12 boys, teachers and parents.
We are into the final few weeks of Term 2 and this
report data will be an important measurement tool of
progress for Year 12 since the last report in early Term
One. A few events are happening with Year 12 this
term to assist them and prepare them for the HSC and
beyond.
1. Careers Interviews
Mrs Kath Knowles – Senior Studies and Careers
Coordinator is interviewing each Year 12 student this
term to help them plan for a future career pathway.
The aim is for each boy to sit with Mrs Knowles and
think about University, TAFE or other options and
to plan accordingly. This is a time-intensive but
important task that provides the best possible to guide
our students as time marches closer towards HSC
Trials, then HSC exam and life beyond.
2. Year 12 Academic Mentoring Interviews
Each boy in Year 12 has an academic mentor, who is
a member of the College Executive, Senior Studies
Team, Year Master or Head of Department. This
term they will again find time in Week 8 or 9 to meet
with Year 12, discuss their latest report and chart a
pathway to the HSC Trials. Each Year 12 boy will be
asked the same questions they were asked in
Term 1:
• What subjects were you pleased with in your
last report. Why?
• What subjects were you disappointed with?
• What strategies can you put into play to improve
your subjects?
• What goals would you like to set yourself for the
next term?
• Tell me about your study habits. How is your
time management going?
Study Skills Tip for June: Reviewing
your work on a daily basis
Did you know that if you don’t look at what you
are learning for a second time within 24 hours you
forget 80% of the detail? This is why your teachers
encourage you to review what you learn each day
when you get home from school.
One of the best habits you can develop is the
following: each afternoon, even before you start your
homework, spend 10-15 minutes reviewing what you
learnt at school that day.
There are lots of different ways you can do this
review, here are some ideas (and you can do
something different every day):
1. Highlight the key points in each lesson.
2. Write down the top 3 things you learnt in each
lesson (you could do this in a separate book or
at the bottom of the day’s classwork).
3. Make a mind map about what you have been
learning in class.
4. Try and explain what you did in each lesson that
day to a family member (or even to the cat).
5. Go on a Google adventure, do some quick
research on one interesting thing from each
lesson.
6. Write up on a white board one main idea from
each lesson (a whiteboard in your room is a
great tool for secondary students).
7. Write down for each subject a question you
could ask about what you learnt that day.
There will be a fabulous payoff to doing this, more of
what you learn at school will stick in your head, you
will have less to learn at test time, and it will make
your assignments and projects easier when you can
recall what you have been learning.
Learn more about the Brain and Advanced Memory
Techniques at www.studyskillshandbook.com.au.
Is your son sitting down each day or once a week to
review his work? This simple process may assist his
exam performance.
Social Justice: Red Shield Appeal supported
I spoke to a parent of a year 11 student last week
and she was surprised to hear that our students
are involved in at least six outreach experiences
every week.
Over the past couple of weeks we have had year
7-10 students train to be buddies to disadvantaged
kids in a reading program. We had twenty students
take part in the Salvos Red Shield Appeal in
locations all over Sydney.
Every week, students attend the Matt Talbot Kiosk,
bowl with the disabled, help out at Waterford
Preschool and play Bingo with the elderly at
Charingfield.
Over 100 boys have offered to donate blood this
year which is a new record.
This week Night Patrol will go out on Friday night
and year 11 students will attend a Social Justice
Day at Christian Brother’s School Lewisham. Next
week, 15 boys will spend the evening at a Street
Retreat in Kings Cross. They will get the chance
to hear first hand what it is like to be homeless
on the streets of Sydney. Our students and staff
should feel very proud of the huge contribtion they
are making to their community.
Our Lady’s Mount & Waterford
Sports Master’s Report
Last weekend saw a big round of sport against
some well-drilled Barker sides. Our 1st XI
Football were gallant and very unlucky in their
2-2 draw. Our 1st XV went down to a big Barker
side that were simply more hungry for the victory
on the day, however, we did have some other
great results including winning the 16A’s; 15A’s;
14A’s and 13A’s rugby. The 15A’s have gone
from strength to strength but come up against a
determined St Aloysius side this week and will
need to keep improving. All teams need to be on
their game this coming week and will need to train
and play well to secure victory.
A reminder that CAS Codes of Conduct apply to
both participants and spectators at our games.
Any student involved in on-field behaviour that
does not fulfill CAS and College expectations will
face either a sports tribunal or will be dealt with
appropriately.
I would like to emphasise that parents and
spectators should not approach opposition or
Waverley College coaches directly on a Saturday.
If you have a complaint or a concern then we
certainly encourage all to voice these but in the
correct manner and through the school rather than
at a venue.
Alcohol is banned at all school grounds and those
caught drinking alcohol will be removed from the
venue.
Let’s hope that this weekends’ sport is conducted
in a manner that brings credit to the school.
Cross Country: Sydney Park - the Year’s
toughest course
Cranbook and St. Aloysius hosted this Meet on
a freezing morning at Sydney Park; arguably the
toughest course for the year.
177 runners contested the U/14 race with Connor
McGrath best performed for Waverley in 4th place
overall (1st CAS U/13), followed by Nick Blakey in
25th place (1st CAS U/12), hotly pursued by Luca
Reiners in 26th place (6th CAS U/13), with Angus
Baird coming in 48th place (3rd CAS U/12), and
Latham James (15th CAS U/14). The team did
great; coming 5th overall (2nd CAS team behind
Barker). Well done to all the boys.
The U/16 race had 163 runners and Oscar
Osbourne ran a fine race to finish 7th overall (2nd
CAS U/16), followed by Jake Bartholomaeus in
13th place (3rd CAS U/15); another great effort.
These boys were followed by Jake Foster, Josh
Causer, Leandro Moore and Michael Chan.
Congratulations to all the boys who ran to their best
ability on a hard course.
Unfortunately captain Jethro James was unable to
run in the Open race, but was there to support the
team. Next week’s Meet is at St. Ignatius College,
Lane Cove. It is the CAS selection race for the CIS
Championships.
The Rugby Report: Good results against Barker
CAS round 4
After a few Saturdays of lovely Autumn weather,
last week saw the first of the big westerly winds
that can make Queens Park a difficult place
to play rugby. Barker College were the visitors
– undefeated in 1sts and traditionally strong
throughout all age groups. A tough day of rugby
beckoned.
16Bs showed glimpses of good play but the
reluctance to tackle was again in evidence at
crucial stages and a good Barker side took the
honours. The Waverley boys proved their ability
when they beat Knox away from home three weeks
ago and need to believe that they have the ability
to play like that again.
The As were up for the challenge and worked
hard against the breeze in the first half to be 5-all
at the break. The boys had trouble playing the
ball in Barker’s end in the second half but kept
persisting and were rewarded at the death with
a controversial try to front-rower Ben Gan, to
steal the win. The C’s had their issues but battled
gamely and the D’s started well but faded late in
the game.
The 13s showed their depth with solid
performances in each grade. The A’s produced
excellent passages but lapses in concentration and
ill-discipline at the breakdown saw Barker come
storming back to get level with 5 minutes to play.
A final try to Waverley gained the win – this team
has plenty of potential but needs to keep focused
for the whole game. The B’s , D’s and E’s won hard
fought matches but the C’s and F’s were unlucky
to lose.
The standout 14s had outstanding wins up at
Barker. Still struggling with injuries, the boys
showed great character to totally dominate. A’s
were clinical with a 48-5 victory while the E’s
racked up 50 points in a fine display. Excellent
work by all players and coaches!
The 15s is traditionally a difficult age group
against this opposition and the D’s, C’s and B’s
were outclassed. The A’s however, kept up their
unbeaten run in CAS by winning 33-20. The boys
are relating well to the coaching of Mr. McBride and
their commitment to training is reaping rewards.
The Opens promised to be tough as Barker
had defeated Knox in all games for the first
time in memory and have real depth. 5th’s
were disappointing with a number of unsavoury
incidents spoiling the game. 4ths, however,
gained a stirring victory 26-12. 3rds went down
and 2nds gained their second victory by downing
their previously unbeaten opposition 12-7.
The 1sts knew they were in for a tough day trying
to emulate the feat of the 2007 side who gained a
famous victory at Queens Park on the way to an
undefeated CAS season.
Our guest speaker on Saturday was Captain of
that particular side, Tom Wallace, who spoke of
the reverence he holds for the ‘Double V’ and of
fond memories at QP. Our boys, however, were
not able to respond to the challenge set down by
the visitors who used their size and speed to great
advantage. Barker rolled two lineouts from 25m to
score two converted tries running with the breeze
to lead 14-0 at halftime. Waverley were not able to
put a dent in the Barker defensive line who played
with great intensity and purpose. Barker crossed
the line early in the second half and the game
seemed over. To Waverley’s credit, they kept
trying to find holes in the defence and a converted
try with 15 minutes to go gave hope to the home
supporters. Unfortunately, Barker’s defence held
strong at the Waves went down 21-7. Outplayed
on the day but unbowed – Waverley still believe
the CAS title is up for grabs as all sides are
capable of winning on any given Saturday.
This week we are away at St. Aloysius which
promises to be yet another weekend of tough,
uncompromising rugby. Good luck to all teams.
Thanks again to the Rugby Supporters Club who
work wonders on a Saturday at Queens Park. As
usual for ‘away’ games we need volunteers from
the 14’s and 15’s parents to assist. If you can
spare some time, it would be gratefully accepted.
