SPECTATORS GUIDE ON HOW TO WATCH THE RACE
Maui’s World Championship XTERRA course is a classic and covers 27 miles of unyielding terrain. The experience is a
sensory riot – crystal clear Pacific waters, fragrant breezes, bright sun, fine volcanic dust, needle-like kiawe thorns, soft
white sand, cool green lawns, and lava rock of every shape, color, and size.
Start and Swim: Located at the beach fronting the Makena Beach & Golf Resort, there are plenty of great vantage
points to watch the mass start from the lawn above. Pros are easy to spot with their identifying swim caps - men in blue
and women in pink. A short beach sprint mid-race between two 750-meter laps of a triangular course gives spectators a
chance to pick out their friends and family from the field.
T1 and T2 - Bike and Run Transition: Located a few yards from the swim start in a big grassy area at the lobby level
of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort. The transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the
change-over from any position around the boundary.
Bike: The bike course is not open to the public and cannot be pre-ridden by competitors.
Run: Most of the run course is also on private lands and closed to the public with the exception of a long, leg-burning
section of sand at Makena Beach, aka “Big Beach”.
Finish: The Makena Beach & Golf Resort is the place to be for both transitions, the finish, and live race reports. There’s
food booths, the Paul Mitchell cut-a-thon, XTERRA Gear shop, the Kona Brewing Liquid Aloha Lounge, and a front row
seat to one of the greatest spectacles in all of sport - the spontaneous, ecstatic, and sometimes tear-jerking displays of
emotion at the finish line.
Friends, Family and fans that are not able to attend the race can get live updates on the internet at www.xterramaui.com
starting at 9am Hawaii time (12 noon PST, 3pm EST, 9pm in Europe, 5am in Sydney, Australia, 8am in New Zealand,
4pm in Brazil).
The Makena Beach & Golf Resort (808-874-1111)
There are few places left in Hawaii where you can stroll along quiet stretches of
sand, see waves splash on ancient, storied shores and feel what the Hawaiians
call the mana, or spirit of the land. One such place is Makena on Maui's southwestern
coast, home of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
The Resort is secluded on 1800 acres, between a perfect crescent beach and
the dramatic slopes of Mount Haleakala. A true Aloha experience, the Resort
welcomes you with everything you desire for your Hawaiian visit. Sparkling
Pacific views from every guest room. A pristine beach. Spectacular golf. Plus
oceanside recreation and enticing dining options.
Designed for relaxation, the Resort surrounds an Asian meditation garden with
stone paths, waterfalls and streams swimming with brilliant multi-colored carp.
You'll feel the serenity from the moment you arrive, when a lei of seashells is
draped over your shoulders and you're welcomed with the genuine smiles and
warm attention of the staff.
QUICK FACTS ON THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
WHAT IS XTERRA: The world’s premier off-road triathlon, combining a 1.5-kilometer (1-mile) swim that starts in front of
the Makena Beach & Golf Resort (formerly the Maui Prince)a 32-kilometer (20-miles) mountain bike that climbs 3,000
feet up and down the lower slopes of Haleakala, and a 12-kilometer (7.5-miles) trail run that traverses lava rock, forest
trails, and beach sand. Top pros finish in roughly two-and-a-half hours.
WHO RACES IN MAUI: A sold-out field of 550 racers including 75 professionals and 450 amateurs representing 23
countries & 36 U.S. states, ages 15 (Lucas Garzon from Piedade, Brazil) to 72 (Ron Hill from Hayden, Idaho).
WHEN: The XTERRA World Championship starts at 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 25. The XTERRA Makena Beach
5km and 10km trail runs are on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 8:00 a.m.
WHERE: At the Makena Beach & Golf Resort (formerly the Maui Prince) on Maui’s South Shore.
WHY: The XTERRA World Championship race is the last in a series of nearly 100 off-road triathlon races held in 12
countries and 32 U.S. States. The concept is to provide a bona-fide off-road world championship for amateur and pro
athletes. For pros there is $105,000 in prize money at stake.
THE COURSE: Arguably the toughest and most scenic on the entire circuit, the Maui XTERRA course is a classic.
From the crystal clear waters of the Pacific, to the sharp lava rocks and kiawe thorns of the bike and run - Hawaii’s natural
obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth.
HOW THEY QUALIFIED: Amateurs enter the World Championship through one of two means:
1. Earn a slot by qualifying as one of the top finishers in their age group at an XTERRA Championship race in Austria,
Brazil, Czech Republic, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Saipan, South Africa, and
Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Idaho, Michigan, Nevada, Utah, Vermont, and Virginia in the United States. There is
also a special Hawaii resident qualifier, the MountainMan, held on Oahu each year, or... 2. Enter through the at large
drawing - a limited number of slots are offered on a first-come first-serve basis.
XTERRA BACKGROUND: This is year 14 for the XTERRA World Championship on Maui – the birthplace of off-road
triathlon. The first XTERRA race was held here on November 3, 1996 with just 123 participants and was televised on
Fox Sports Net. The demand for the sport of XTERRA exploded thereafter and there are now more than 30,000 competitors
from all 50 states and more than 40 countries worldwide and each year a new one-hour TV show is produced
and broadcast across the U.S. showcasing the scenic beauty of Hawaii.
1996: Jimmy Riccitello and Michellie Jones win inaugural event in Wailea, Maui.
1999: 11 races spanning from California to New Jersey. First year of Pro Points Series.
2000: XTERRA goes global with its first international races in England, Japan, and Canada.
2003: The seventh consecutive year of expansion provides more than 50 events to compete in.
2009: Now 60 events in the U.S., plus more than 30 international races including a European Tour
TELEVISION: This will be the 14th straight year a nationally broadcast one-hour show will be produced on the event,
which showcases Maui’s scenic south shore. The 2008 XTERRA World Championship one-hour TV show has been
seen by 4.4 million viewers via national syndication (ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX), Fox Sports Network, and Comcast
Sportsnet cable airings. There have been 190 airings of the show since January 2008 and it is still being broadcast on
Fox stations nationwide. This year’s show will start its run in national syndication in mid-January 2009.
XTERRA MAKENA BEACH TRAIL RUNS
Saturday, October 24 at 8:00 a.m.
The off-road adventurous spirit of XTERRA reaches out
to the community with the XTERRA Makena Beach 5km
and 10km Trail Runs. Both races are open to one-andall,
and a benefit for the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Maui
County. In an effort to get more participants involved, the
5km is open for walkers too! Awards go to the top three
in each age group and the 10km men’s and women’s
winners earn roundtrip airfare between the mainland and
Hawaii on Hawaiian Airlines.
The race starts at the Makena Beach & Golf Resort then
quickls ascends up the south slope of Haleakala into a
desert-like environment. After a pass though "Cactus
Alley", competitors are treated to a run on the white
sands of Makena Beach, famed as one of the most beautiful
beaches in the world. The course continues through
the "spooky" forest adorned with kiawe trees and leads to
a striking black sand beach. The final leg is a balancing
act of speed and skill, as runners cross over jagged lava
rocks, infamous for grabbing and twisting unsuspecting
ankles.
Entry is $25 for the 5k and $30 for the 10k and all competitors
receive a tee shirt and refreshments.
Race day registration is available from 6:30-7:30 a.m.
and runners can also sign up at www.xterramaui.com or
call toll-free to 1-877-751-8880.
XTERRA BY NIGHT
Maui is a reward for a great season, and as such
competitors are treated to a pair of "ono" dinners with the
Night of Champions carbo-loading affair on Saturday and
the awards celebration on Sunday - complete with highlight
videos and special presentations. Both are held under the
stars at the magnificent Makena Beach & Golf Resort.
On Sunday, it gets scary! The XTERRA Halloween costume
party is legendary...Despite the typical post-race banter and
antics by delirious athletes, the best-costumed competitor
wins Hawaiian Airlines roundtrip tickets for two from the
U.S. mainland to Hawaii.

Foodbank.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
Maui’s XTERRA course is legendary, and conditions change radically from year-to-year, diminishing the advantage to
repeat competitors and perpetuating the course's stature as the most intimidating in the series. Hawaii’s natural
obstacles are unlike anywhere else on earth and for the 500+ athletes racing in Maui – the XTERRA World
Championship is a truly unique experience. The victor will traverse this rugged terrain in roughly two and half hours
(although Conrad Stoltz broke the record by almost two minutes when he crossed in 2:22:55 in 2002), with the lead
woman 30-minutes behind. Age groupers must reach the bike/run transition by 1:00pm (race starts at 9am), or their
quest for the finish will be cut short. NOTE: Course records mean little as the route has changed through the years.
SWIM
Distance: 1.5-kilometers (0.93 miles)
Location: Maluaka Beach right in front of the host hotel
Access: Open to the public
The rough water swim is two laps of a 750-meter triangular course, with a 50-yard beach
shuffle between laps to get the blood pumping in a totally different direction. The first
male & female age groupers out of the water win an XTERRA Velocity++ Speedsuit!
SWIM RECORD:
Gender Name Time Year
Male Glenn Wachtel (HI) 18:10 2000
Female Raeleigh Tennant (AUS) 18:31 2000
Swim to Bike (T1), and Bike to Run (T2) Transition
Location: Located at the lobby level of the Makena Beach & Golf Resort in a big grassy area
Access: The swim/bike transition area is for competitors only, however, spectators may view the change-over
from any position around the boundary.
MOUNTAIN BIKE
Distance:
Location:
Access:
10
32 Kilometers (20 miles)
The slopes of the mighty Haleakala Volcano
Closed to the public
Competitors are not permitted to pre-ride the XTERRA World
Championship course. For newcomers, it is read and react.
For veterans, the experience might allow them to remember
portions but more often than not it instills a solid feeling of
respect for the Old Lady of XTERRA.
Every year competitors say, “XYZ course is tougher than
Maui”. Every year around noon on Championship Sunday,
the look – the eyes pointing down and the head shaking side
to side – tells you that there is nothing like Haleakala.
Climbing from sea level to 1,200 feet then down and back up to 1,400 feet with a final portion called “the plunge” of 8-
kilometers back to sea level, this track has everything. Full of rock strewn paths, gnarly golf ball sized gravel, short
steep and long go forever climbs, hard packed lava, and sometimes, depending on conditions, deep, dusty silt.
Over 3,000 total feet of climbing.
BIKE RECORD:
Gender Name Time Year
Male Conrad Stoltz (RSA) 1:24:12 2002
Female Melissa Thomas (USA) 1:41:02 2004
OFF-ROAD RUN
Distance: 11 Kilometers (7 miles)
Location: South Maui
mtb elevation gain table
Out on the run athletes will find all sorts of sand - white, gold, black, salt and
pepper, green or garnet. There’s a lot more climbing involved, a spooky forest to
navigate, a dozen different surfaces to cross, and just before the finish line some of
Hawaii’s most stunning oceanfront scenery.
There is no accounting for the heat generated by gnarly lava fields, making otherwise
simple obstacles extremely difficult to conquer. The "Makena Beach Mile" is
a grueling slog along soft sand, but a beautiful end run along the ocean-front golf
course helps racers forget it all at the finish.
RUN RECORD:
Gender Name Time Year
Male Jan Rehula (CZE) 33:14 2004
Female Erika Csomor (HUN) 38:18 2004
“KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEW
Nobody on the planet has been
to more XTERR Championship
events than the managing
director of the XTERRA World
Tour - "Kahuna Dave" Nicholas.
Having been to every World
Championship race in Maui
since creating the sport back in
1996, and having been onsite
to see this years races unfold
all over the world - the Kahuna
is more than qualified to speculate
on who might win it all this year. That doesn't mean
he'll get it right, in fact, he's hardly ever right (just 2 for 14 in
picking winners over the last seven years).
So, with a grain of salt, but some tasty insight nonetheless,
here are the Kahuna's '09 Maui prognostications:
Last year at Maui he was 3rd coming off the bike, but was
suffering from sciatica damage and faded on the run. His
problems are behind him and Franky will be strong. Nico
Lebrun dominated the last half of the USA season and
knows Maui well. Conrad Stoltz was blitzing his way
through 2009 before a huge cut in his foot at Richmond
sidetracked him. He has had time to recover and will be
ready to go for his 4th title.
The more things change, the more they stay the same.
Every year our field gets stronger and faster. 2009 is no
exception. The top 10 women from 2008 are all back and 9
out of 10 men. And neither of our 3 time champs Mel
McQuaid or Conrad Stoltz were inside the top 10 last year.
We have a chance for history as Julie Dibens could be the
first to win 3-in-a-row. A lot of big-time athletes have tried,
but none have done it.
Spanish Mountain bike racer Ruben Ruzafa will be back to
reclaim his Championship. Ruben led the Italian XTERRA
this year until Franky Batelier chased him down on the run.
The strongest person on paper has to be the Frenchman.
Batelier swept the Euro Tour this year winning every race.
Shonny
Julie
14
We will add mtb specialist and Canadian Olympian Marie-
Helene Premont who will try and duplicate what Ruzafa and
Michi Weiss did last year; prove that the strong biker can
overcome the swim/run of the triathlete. Renata Bucher
won the Euro title this year plus Malaysia and Saipan. She
is stronger than ever and wants Maui badly after tasting the
podium with a 4th last year. South Africa and Czech
“KAHUNA DAVE’S” PRO RACE PREVIEW
Conrad
Ruben
champion Carina Wasle is training in Colorado and looked
good at the USA championship race. Shonny
Vanlandingham has had a great year with wins on the USA
Tour and in Mexico. Living on the Big Island will have her
ready for the Maui heat; she had the fastest bike time last
year and is swimming and running a lot better. Little Lesley
Patterson is ready to get on the podium and we must never,
ever leave out Danelle Kabush who simply shines at Maui
and was 2nd last year and in 2006.
Olivier Marceau is back and looking for that elusive win after
so many 2nds, Mike Vine has led Maui and is a consistent
podium finisher; Josiah Middaugh is healthy and motivated.
Seth Wealing, Sam Gardner, Richard Ussher and Rom
Akerson all won XTERRA National Champ races this year.
Eneko Llanos is back after Ironman, Olympian Brent
McMahon is entered, and both are very fast. Whew – what
a field and how do we pick ‘em?
I’ll go with history and say Julie can’t get her third in a row.
I see a battle with Mel, Renata and Shonny chasing the big
Brit out of the water. Danelle and Lesley making up minutes
on the run.
The wild card? What can we expect from Marie-Helene?
Can she shred the gals on the bike and hold them off on the
run?
Ruben will be strong but he will, once again, have to come
from behind. I see Brent McMahon, Batelier and Olivier in
the lead early with Conrad and Mike Vine catching them
and everyone knowing that Ruben is back there along with
Austrian Michi Weiss. They will not take it easy this year.
15
At the end I have to go with Batelier and McQuaid. If
Conrad keeps his equipment together he will be tough to
beat and if Julie stays healthy and rides like she did last
year – she will change history.

LAST YEAR AT THE XTERRA WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
Ruben Ruzafa, 24, from Spain and Julie Dibens, 33, from
England won the men’s and women’s XTERRA World
Championship titles on a trademark tropical day in Maui.
Ruzafa, competing in his first XTERRA, became the
youngest racer to win the crown by edging Austrian Olympic
mountain biker Michael Weiss by 34 seconds after 28
grueling miles of swimming, mountain biking and running.
“I decided to do this race two months ago after talking with
(fellow countryman and 2003/04 XTERRA World Champ)
Eneko Llanos,” said the current Spanish mountain biking
champion. “I didn’t know I could do so well, but I thought if
I didn’t lose too much time on the swim I would be able to
catch up on the bike and hopefully hold on during the run.”
That’s exactly how it played out. Ruzafa, who only started
swimming a year ago, came out of the swim more than two
minutes behind a tight pack of leaders – Brent McMahon,
Craig Evans, Branden Rakita, Eneko Llanos, Olivier
Marceau, Seth Wealing, Hektor Llanos, Franky Batelier, and
Conrad Stoltz – but was able to work his way to the front of
the pack by about mile 14 on the bike.
Early on, this race showed all the signs of a Stoltz world
championship run. The “Caveman” was out of the water with
the leaders, passed everyone by the fourth mile of the bike
where he had already put 30 seconds on Marceau, Dan
Hugo, Batelier, and Eneko Llanos. From there he extended
the gap, and was up 1:30 by mile 10 and with less than two
miles left of heavy climbing before “The Plunge” steep
downhill section where Stoltz’ is at his best, it looked like he
was well on his way to a 4th World Title.
“I felt really good today, best I’ve felt in a long time. I was
relaxed and riding really fast on the technical stuff, and even
had quite a bit in the tank for the run, but then it came down
to luck,” said Stoltz, who got a slow-leak somewhere around
mile 13 or so that forced him to stop, repair, and watch as
Ruzafa went by.
The run belonged to the speedy Brent McMahon who
turned in a 43:18 (two minutes quicker than anyone else).
McMahon passed a half-dozen others and finished in third,
the same spot he placed here in 2005.
One of the last guys McMahon passed was Vine, who settled
in for fourth place, and the consummate pro Olivier
Marceau rounded out the top five. Eneko Llanos was sixth
and won the Hawaiian Airlines Double for the third straight
year, and Middaugh came in as the top American in 7th.
DIBENS DOUBLES XTERRA WORLD TITLE COUNT
Dibens dominated the women’s race for the second straight
year, taking the lead from the very start of the swim all the
way through the finish line with a winning time of 3:03:57, a
full minute ahead of runner-up Danelle Kabush from
Canada. Dibens is just the second woman to win the
XTERRA World Championship in back-to-back years (following
Melanie McQuaid’s 2005 and 2006 titles).
“I think this one was harder, it definitely took more out of
me,” said the former All-American swimmer at Louisiana
State University and 2004 Olympic triathlete. “I was hurting
out there on the run and the heat really got to me, and just
before the finish a guy passed me and said that Danelle was
right behind so I had to sprint to the finish and that was murder.
Despite that, XTERRA is awesome. I just wished I
would have got into this earlier. It’s just something where
everyone who tries it loves it, and then it’s addictive.”
Melanie McQuaid was supposed to provide Dibens stiffest
competition, but “some kind of intestinal thing” turned out to
be her chief rival and after regurgitating over and over in the
early portions of the run, there was nothing left to do but wait
for next year.
“I want a mulligan, can we race tomorrow,” said the threetime
World Champ. “I tried to keep going but just kept catapulting
backwards, it was the worst.”
Stoltz bad luck aside, Ruzafa and Weiss came in with heavy
mountain bike credentials and lived up to every bit of it –
posting the two fastest splits in 1:30:25 and 1:30:33 respectively.
To put that in perspective, American Josiah Middaugh
who had the fastest split on this course two years ago - had
the third best time in 1:33:39.
48
Shonny Vanlandingham solidified her reputation as being
the best women’s biker this course has seen by turning in
the fastest bike for the third time in four years.

2009 XTERRA EUROPEAN TOUR RESULTS
Franky Batelier and Renata Bucher are the best XTERRA athletes in Europe. As proof, the duo won the XTERRA European
Championship race, which doubled as the XTERRA Austrian Championship, and the XTERRA European Tour titles as well
on a picture perfect day in Klopeinersee (a beautiful lake village nestled in the Carinthian Alps) on August 22, 2009.
For Batelier the victory marks his fourth win in as many chances on the Euro Tour and seals his fate as the 2009 XTER-
RA European Tour Champion. Bucher, who has won three of the four races on the Tour this year (as well as Saipan,
Malaysia, and the Northeast Cup in Vermont) solidified her fourth consecutive XTERRA European Tour Championship with
the win.
THE XTERRA HALL OF FAME
When XTERRA celebrated its 10th year in October of 2005,
the founders created the XTERRA HALL OF FAME. This year,
on the eve of the XTERRA World Championship on the luau
grounds of the Maui Prince, another XTERRA legend will be
honored in front of their peers at the night of champions dinner.
NED OVEREND (2005)
After retiring from mountain biking in 1996 at the age of 40 (he won six national titles and became mountain
bikings first world champion in 1990), Overend competed in the first-ever XTERRA in 1996, finishing third. In ‘97
he was second, and in ‘98 and ‘99 he won consecutive World Championships at the ripe young age of 42 & 43. He
was also the XTERRA USA Series Champion in 2002. At the 2004 World Championship, at age 50, Overend
posted the 9th fastest bike split and placed 21st overall. Midway through the bike course Peter Reid was overheard
saying “There’s a 50-year-old in front of me!”
As an XTERRA pro, Ned regularly beat the spandex off guys 10 and 15 years his junior. He was so devastating
on the mountain bike that he earned the nicknames of “Deadly Nedly” and “The Lung.” At the end of his XTERRA
career, race commentators respectfully called him “The Old Man of the Mountain.”
SCOTT TINLEY (2006)
Scott Tinley was named the second inductee into the XTERRA Hall of Fame. In 1996, Scott competed in XTERRA's
inaugural event, known as Aquaterra at the time. That day, he finished in 4th place and went on to finish in the top
10 in both 1997 and '98. But more than just an athlete, Scott was one of the early ambassadors for the sport. Tinley
was at the sharp end of getting athletes to Maui. When you look at the high level pro's that came 10 years ago, it
is far more impressive than what one, solitary, unusual race with a $5,000 prize list should have attracted. Jimmy
Riccitello, Mike Pigg, Wes Hobson, Ray Browning, Pat Brown, Scott Molina, Emilio Desoto, Jeff Devlin, Kenny Glah,
Paul Huddle, Michellie Jones, Paula Newby, Sian Welch, Karen Smeyers and more I probably can't remember. A
lot of that participation is because of ST. Tinley also campaigned in the Hawaiian Mountain Tour bike race in Hawaii
to promote XTERRA and near the end of his career, he helped found and develop the sport of off-road triathlon.
KERSTIN WEULE (2007)
Kerstin Weule, using equally deadly swim, mountain bike and run speed, won more XTERRA races than anyone
(until Jamie Whitmore took on the challenge). She won 19 XTERRA titles, including the US. Pro Series in 1999
and 2000, and the 2000 World Championship. Born in Braunlage, Germany in 1966, Weule’s name was synonymous
with XTERRA for years. She was 5th at Maui in 1997 after a second in Kirkwood and a third at Big Bear. The
winning started in 1998 in Louisiana and she won the next two big races. In her career, Kerstin won at almost every
U.S. venue where XTERRA traveled too, including races in the UK and Canada. Her early battles in 97-98 and 99
with Lorraine Barrow and Jody Purcell were wonderful to watch. Weule brought much to XTERRA – an open
disposition, the ability to share all that she knew at XTERRA University clinics, a great laugh, her cartwheel at the
finish line, & blue painted toenails on raceday. Kerstin retired from XTERRA in 2003.
JIMMY RICCITELLO (2008)
Flash back to 1996… AquaTerra…the first XTERRA…123 Speedo-clad racers on the start line at dawn on the
beach in Wailea, Maui. A who’s who of triathlon and mountain biking showed up to try something completely
new…off-road triathlon. And, it turned out that XTERRA with its catch phrase “Your toughest competitor is Mother
Nature” was right up Riccitello’s alley. He took the inaugural XTERRA World Championship by more than three
minutes over triathlon great Mike Pigg. After the win, he said “Man this race is a bitch, but it’s the true spirit of
triathlon – the athlete against the course”. Over seven years Riccitello raced XTERRA all over the U.S., including
six more Maui World Championships, and was always the life of the party. Fellow athletes, XTERRA University students,
and event staff alike were subjected to his less than politically correct opinions, quick wit, bodily sounds, and
practical jokes.

THE XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP
DEC. 6, 2009
In 2009 XTERRA took trail running to the extreme with the halfmarathon
distance "Xduro". More than a dozen endurance
runs across the U.S. and several more around the globe have
prepared runners for the ultimate Hawaiian experience - the
XTERRA Trail Running World Championship at Kualoa Ranch
(pictured here) on the island of Oahu.
The XTERRA Trail Running World Championship is scheduled for December 6, 2009, a week before the Honolulu
Marathon.
"After 12 years of producing trail runs alongside our XTERRA off-road triathlons we've learned that our audience wants
a bigger challenge than a 10k," said TEAM Unlimited CEO Tom Kiely. "What the market told us was to create a series of
half-marathons that have a physical challenge parallel to that of a road marathon, but with Mother Nature along for the
ride."
The XTERRA Trail Run World Champs will be held in conjunction with the XTERRA Trail Running Series, a collection of
50 trail runs of various distances twisting on crooked, dirty, and rocky paths from Malibu to Japan. Global Tour stops for
the 21k "Xduro" included New Zealand, Japan, France, Italy, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
The final stop in the Series will certainly satisfy even the most adventurous runner. Kualoa Ranch, located on the northeastern
side of Oahu less than an hour from Honolulu, is a 4000-acre working cattle ranch spread from the steep
mountain cliffs to the sparkling sea. The ranch terrain varies from dense rainforest to broad open valleys and from
beautiful white sand beaches to awesome verdant cliff faces. Kualoa Ranch has been the site of television shows and
Hollywood films such as Jurassic Park, Windtalkers, Pearl Harbor, Godzilla, Tears of the Sun, 50 First Dates, and LOST.
In addition to the epic location, the World Champs will immerse participants in a festival atmosphere with great food and
family entertainment. Shorter distance trail runs, races for kids, and a walk-a-thon for charity will also be offered.
"XTERRA is thrilled with the growth of its Trail Running Series, and we think the longer distance focus will push it to whole
new extreme in terms of participation and challenge," said Janet Clark, President of TEAM Unlimited/XTERRA. "XTERRA
Trail Runs give runners an opportunity to explore some wildly natural environments and challenge Mother Nature's diverse
and unique offerings from roots and rocks, to stream crossings and unexpected scenic vistas."
Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help Athletes
Stalk Their On-Course Prey
XTERRAGEAR.COM NEWS
TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s new
line of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of the
XTERRA World Championship in Maui in October 2008.
While many of the competitors lay in bed the night before
counting sheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoon
Gray and Brown were counting shoes.
Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poured
down from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their
nearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines,
Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes.
“Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, who
along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for
Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing stability
for less weight.”
They returned to the drawing board, determined to make
XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running
shoe on the market. With four months until the launch of the
shoes at the Outdoor Retailer show in Salt Lake City,
designs were tweaked, materials tested — including a
unique combination of lighter blown rubber in the forefoot
and a heavier high-abrasion carbon rubber in the heel.
But their biggest scientific sport discovery was yet to come.
After much trial and error in their New Hampshire lab, a
molding model never before seen in the category was
created. Gone was a traditional glued-together midsole,
replaced by a dual-injected, dual-density EVA made of two
layers — the top soft, the bottom harder — giving comfort
and stability while taking away weight.
The result: an eco-friendly design that’s one of the lightest
trail runners ever, weighing in at less than 10.5 ounces for
men, 9.5 for women.
With the weight issue solved, multi-sport competitors Gray
and Brown began to research every movement taken on a
trail — the footplant and lateral pushoff around a 90-degree
directional path change, the flexed-footed jump over water,
the balanced gripped-toe run across a log.
As they were going for a timed run in the woods near their
studios — furiously passing each other, taking turns as the
lead — the big-picture design inspiration for XTERRA’s new
footwear line came: a big-cat predator’s paw.
“Chasing its prey, a big cat grips into the earth — digging
into loose gravel, dirt, gaining time and distance on every
step, every leap,” said Gray, a former collegiate decathlete
at Syracuse.
“The outer part of their foot acts like a traction pad,” he
continued. “It’s from there that we came up with XTERRA’s
unique outsole lug concept.”
The concept’s name: WILDTred. According to Gray and
Brown, its carved claw-like perimeter lug design forms
independent touch pads from forefoot to heel with deep flex
zones for controlled, wrap-around grip. They also noted the
lugs are higher than the shoe bottom’s concave center,
helping it act as its front and rear suspension while creating
a larger surface area.
“With the cat’s paw, we liked the symbolism of man’s
co-existence with all things found in the environment, said
Brown. “We adapt to our surroundings, whether it be
animal, plant or any of nature’s elements.
Continued Brown: “The thought behind XTERRA’s new line
is that the outdoors are no longer to be conquered; they’re
to be connected with.”
XTERRA’s footwear launch includes five styles: trail
runner, trail trainer, ultra trainer, performance sandal, and
performance slide.
