Chiropractic History:
A New Focus for Research at the AECC
Francis J H Wilson, DC, MSc, FCC
(PhD Candidature, University of Southampton)
Research at the AECC has traditionally focused mainly on clinical and basic science topics, most frequently
employing quantitative methodologies. Recently however, new fields of research and alternative
methodologies have been given serious consideration. The inclusion of chiropractic history as an accepted
field for academic study at the College is a good example of this.
Within the European context, concern was raised in the
1990s that chiropractic history had been widely
neglected by researchers. European chiropractic lacked
detailed written histories. At a General Council Meeting
of the European Chiropractors’ Union (ECU) in May 1997,
it was unanimously agreed that it was essential to begin
working towards just such a history. Dr Kyrre Myhrvold
(1998) wrote: “A profession without a written history is a
spineless profession. Pride and identity in one’s profession
is based on knowledge of the past and the goals for
the future.” 1
The AECC is now taking a leading role in this field. Francis
Wilson, a member of AECC Faculty, is undertaking an
MPhil/PhD in which he is examining the history of
chiropractic’s professionalization in Britain, a project that
is receiving ECU funding. Francis has also been
Francis Wilson at work in the History Library.
instrumental in establishing a History Library at the
College, made possible by financial support from the
Treatment a Month (TAM) Club. Dr Michael Copland-Griffiths, Chairman of the General Chiropractic Council,
officially opened the Library on 7th March 2003. By
coincidence, the most convenient date for the opening
was DD Palmer’s birthday, suggesting that the library might
have the blessing of chiropractic’s Founder!
This project is supported by the ECU Research Fund and the Treatment a Month Club (AECC).
The library is intended to ensure that available historical
materials are protected for future reference, to ensure that
historical information is readily accessible for interested
parties, and to act as a focus for the collection of
chiropractic historical data from across Europe. It is
intended not only for the use of students and staff at the
AECC, but also for the chiropractic profession as a whole
and those who wish to study it.
