Message
Research and Continuing Professional
Development at AECC
2001 – 2003
Since the reorganisation of research at AECC in 1999, further developments took place in the autumn of
2001. This reflected the pivotal role of research activity both in the professional development of Faculty at
AECC and in the delivery of postgraduate education and continuing professional development (CPD). As
a result, a single department within the AECC was established to provide postgraduate education, training
and research opportunities to maintain and enhance the professional skills and competencies of chiropractors,
and to provide research and other scholarly activities for the professional development of AECC staff. The
Department of Research and Professional Development was established in October 2001, and for the first time
the AECC Research Report is expanded to include Postgraduate Studies.
The period covered in this Report (2001-2003) has been productive and exciting. Research activity has continued
and in some areas expanded, maintaining the reputation of the AECC as a research centre of excellence
among chiropractic educational institutions worldwide. Research at the AECC is evidenced in the main by
the Faculty who have either completed or are currently enrolled on PhD and Masters programmes, by
publications in the peer-reviewed literature and by platform and poster presentations at national and
international research conferences. A record of these is given in the first half of the Report. The AECC is
committed to research as a means of providing a stimulating and intellectual environment in which
undergraduate students, postgraduate students and Faculty alike all learn. Research ensures that teaching
staff are current and up-to-date in their respective disciplines, and that as a result, the education provided at
AECC is of the highest standards and quality.
Since the establishment of the Department in 2001, there has been a striking expansion of the postgraduate
education and training portfolio. The AECC has developed, in collaboration with the University of Portsmouth,
two new postgraduate Masters programmes and a new Professional Doctorate programme. The latter is the
first of its kind in chiropractic education worldwide, meeting the demand for more professionally relevant
programmes in research. Further details of these innovative developments in postgraduate education can be
found in the second half of the Report. In addition to these award-bearing programmes, the Department has
implemented an impressive CPD portfolio. These short courses and workshops in a wide range of subject and
skills-based areas for qualified chiropractors are delivered in the main by AECC Faculty, again reflecting the
expertise, energy and commitment of our teaching staff. Again, details of these CPD events are recorded in
the second half of the Report.
This Report reflects the considerable expertise, talent, ability and effort in research and postgraduate education
expended by our staff at AECC during their working and professional lives. I am very proud as Director of the
Department to be able to present this Report and take this opportunity to sincerely thank everyone who has
contributed to research and to postgraduate studies over the last two years. I would also like to thank the
Department’s Research Associate, Mrs. Denise Stys-Norman, for her expert skills in compiling the Report, and
the Departmental Administrator, Mrs. Georgina Enright, for her invaluable support in managing the postgraduate
education and training programmes.
Texas Visit
In 2001, Dr. Jeff Bagust took a month’s study leave to
visit the laboratories of Professor W G Willis in
Galveston, Texas. Prof Willis is one of the world’s
top experimental spinal physiologists, and his
laboratory specialises in pain physiology, with
particular emphasis on inflammatory pain. A major
area of current interest is the role that nervous activity
travelling backwards along sensory nerves from the
spinal cord to the periphery – the Dorsal Root Reflex –
may have in the generation of peripheral
inflammation.
Professor W G Willis (left) and Dr. Jeff Bagust (right) in the
research laboratory, Galveston, Texas.
Jeff had worked on the dorsal root reflex for many years
before joining the AECC, and was invited by Prof Willis
to visit Galveston to investigate the pharmacology of
the dorsal root reflex using an isolated spinal cord
preparation that he has developed. Whilst there, Jeff
gave a seminar on “The Isolated Spinal Cord and the
Dorsal Root Reflex”.
The visit was very successful. It was shown that the
sensory nerves leaving the spinal cord exhibit two
different patterns of antidromic (backwards)
discharges, which can be distinguished using a
convulsant agent, muscimol. In the absence of
muscimol, the dorsal root reflex consists of bursts of
large amplitude action potentials, but this activity is
abolished by low concentrations of muscimol (2µM)
and replaced by activity in nerve fibres producing very
small action potentials, typical of those carrying pain
signals. It seems probable that it is this small amplitude
activity that is responsible for the spread of
inflammatory reaction and pain to sites distant from
an area of damaged tissue.
Cutaneous Sensitivity
Palpation is one of the major investigative techniques
used by chiropractors, and a considerable amount
of time is spent by students at the AECC learning
palpatory techniques. Palpatory skills are essentially
subjective and difficult to quantitate, but a series of
three BSc projects (PS Chandhok, IE Foster, MC de
Jager) have attempted to measure aspects of sensory
acuity that might contribute to palpatory ability and
be expected to change with training.
Two parameters have been measured; 2 point
discrimination threshold (2-PD)- a measure of the
minimum distance between a pair of points touched
on the tip of the index finger that can be identified as
two, and not one; and the thickness of paper through
which a thin nylon monofilament can be accurately
located (the Palpation Threshold).
Comparison of 1 st year students who had no training
in palpation, with 5 th year students who were using
palpation techniques in the clinic on a daily basis,
showed that the experienced group were able to
identify two points touched on the skin more easily
than the inexperienced students, and they were also
able to locate the filament under a greater thickness
of paper.
This indicates that the fingers of the 5 th year students
were more sensitive than those of the 1 st year students,
giving support to the suggestion that it is possible to
improve palpatory ability by appropriate training.
Rod and Frame
The Rod and Frame test is a measure of an individual’s perception of verticality. Subjects are required to
rotate a rod to a vertical position within a square frame. Errors in orientation are produced when the outer
frame is tilted 10° - 20°. In a recent publication, researchers at CMCC have shown that patients with neck
pain produce greater errors on the Rod and Frame test than asymptomatic controls. They suggest that this test
might be a useful tool in assessing neck problems and the effects of therapy.
All studies using the Rod and Frame test so far have used cumbersome mechanical systems, requiring specialized
facilities. In collaboration with Dr Kim Humphreys (Dean of Research at CMCC), Jeff has developed a computer-
based version of the Rod and Frame test, which has the advantages of ease of use and portability. The test
can either be performed in a darkened room using a conventional VDU screen, or using a pair of video
glasses.
Results of preliminary trials on asymptomatic subjects show results very similar to those reported in the literature
using mechanical systems. Investigations involving subjects with neck problems are planned in the near
future.
Master’s Degree in Education
Networked Collaborative Teaching and Learning
Ian Brown BSc, PhD, MEd
Senior Lecturer in Physiology
All healthcare professionals now recognise the need for CPD to ensure that they maintain the necessary
skills and competencies throughout professional life. The chiropractic profession is now on the verge of
introducing mandatory CPD in order for practitioners to retain their registration with the national regulatory
bodies. It is generally viewed within the profession that on one hand, time away from practice, travel and
cost are negative aspects of engaging in venue-based CPD events but on the other hand, social and
professional interaction on a
personal level is a very positive
aspect. In addition, previous studies
have identified a potential
requirement for alternative modes
of delivery of CPD learning activities
such as distance learning and use
of the Internet (Bolton 2002).
As part of the staff development
initiative at AECC, Dr. Ian Brown
undertook a Masters degree in
education specialising in teaching
and learning on the Internet. This
brought knowledge and expertise
into the college that would allow
future development of on-line
courses for both distance learning
for CPD and in-house
undergraduate computer-assisted
learning.
The Master’s course was undertaken
at the Department of Education,
University of Sheffield, a leading
school in the implementation of
technology in education. The course
itself was a distance learning
exercise with all modules carried out
on-line including the project viva-
voce and graduation! The four
modules making up the course
consisted mainly of practical action
research relevant to the students’
individual professional practice, and
developing the relevant skills to both
develop on-line courses and to
implement their delivery through
virtual learning environments (Brown
2003). The final module consisted of
a short research project (shorter in
scope and duration than a typical
science or medical Master’s
project).
Feature Reports
Ian Brown’s dissertation was entitled ‘A survey of chiropractors’ and final year chiropractic
students’ attitudes to on-line learning before and after participating in an on-line learning
event, either as independent learners or collaborative learners’.
The study’s aims and objectives were to investigate and compare chiropractors’ attitudes to learning on-line
before and after taking part in a short on-line course relevant to their clinical practice, having worked either
as independent learners or as part of a collaborative group of learners. In particular, the study set out to
identify the perceived positive or negative aspects of chiropractors’ respective experiences and whether or
not these were relevant to views held about the delivery of CPD in general.
Two cohorts of volunteers were recruited for the study. Thirty senior intern undergraduate students from the
Anglo-European College of Chiropractic, who were about to enter practice and 30 qualified practitioners
currently attending voluntary weekend CPD events at the same institution. All participants were sent an initial
questionnaire to provide data about their previous experiences of and attitudes to, using the Internet or other
on-line resources as part of their learning and practice. A second questionnaire was sent to all participants
after they had all completed a short on-line course within a web-based virtual learning environment specifically
authored for the study. Fifteen of the undergraduates and fifteen qualified practitioners undertook the course
as independent learners and the remainder engaged with identical course material but with the freedom to
collaborate with their peers within that group through a text based chat room and discussion forum.
The data from the first questionnaire showed that undergraduate students used the Internet more as a part of
their learning compared to the qualified chiropractors. Although the frequency of use was greater in the
undergraduate cohort, the type of resources used was similar for both groups. Both groups identified that
convenience, lower cost and flexibility of learning were advantages to learning on-line and that isolation and
lack of contact with colleagues, peers and tutors, lack of technical support and feedback were a
disadvantage. Overall, undergraduate interns expressed less negative concerns than did the qualified
practitioners.
Data from the second questionnaire showed that most respondents generally thought that the learning event
had been a positive or very positive experience, with no significant difference between the individual or
collaborative learning sets. A greater number of qualified chiropractors remained neutral, saying it had been
neither a positive nor negative experience. No respondents claimed it had been a negative experience. All
groups indicated that they thought the level of support received during the learning event was satisfactory.
There were however, significant differences as to the level of support that different groups thought that they
had received. The highest level of satisfaction was shown by the undergraduate and practitioner collaborative
learning groups. The lowest was shown by the undergraduate and practitioner independent learning groups.
This difference in perception within the collaborative learning groups may be due to peer interactions within
the learning sets.
In conclusion, the results of this study show an overall positive attitude by chiropractors to learning on-line.
Collaboration and cooperation with peers and tutors when learning on-line may partially satisfy some of the
concerns shown about the perceived fear of isolation and lack of support associated with distance learning.
Attention should be paid to the less computer-competent learners so as not to exclude or disadvantage them
in any future on-line CPD distance learning events.
Cervical Functional Parameters in
Subjects Submitted to Cervical Fatigue
and Subjects that have Suffered a
Whiplash Injury
Guy Gosselin, DC
(PhD Candidature, University of Southampton)
The aim of this project is to understand the effects
of muscle fatigue and whiplash on cervical
function and to identify the effects of muscle
fatigue and cervical whiplash on the vestibular
(balance) and cervical somatosensory (neck)
components of neck function. This should eventually
provide professionals involved in treating patients that
have suffered a whiplash injury with additional
information necessary to optimise the rehabilitative
process.
The first part of the past year has been spent on
investigating the validity and reliability of the
equipment. This was followed by the first
experimentation, which has been written up and
submitted for publication. (Gosselin, Rassoulian and
Brown, 2003)
The second and third experiments are presently being
concluded. These are: “Effects of neck extensor
muscles fatigue on head repositioning” and
“Electromyography of the neck extensor muscle during
an isometric contraction”. During the next months, a
specially developed linear oscillator used in the
production of vestibular fatigue will be validated.
The Intra-Articular Synovial Folds of the
Cervical Spine
Alexandra Webb BSc, MChiro
(PhD Candidature, University of Southampton)
Autopsy studies of the victims of motor vehicle
trauma have demonstrated damage to the
synovial joints of the cervical spine, including
haemarthrosis, contusions of the intra-articular synovial
folds, rupture of the joint capsule and occult fractures
of the articular processes. Thus these structures are
considered to be possible sources of neck pain and
headache following trauma to the cervical spine.
Previous studies have examined the intra-articular
synovial folds of the cervical spine in vitro. However,
different methods of morphological investigation have
been used and the descriptions and classifications of
Feature Reports
the synovial folds are conflicting. Hence,
themorphology of these structures, their function and
their clinical relevance remains a controversial issue.
During the last 12 months work has progessed in the
Department of Anatomical Sciences (University of
Southampton) developing a technique for assessing
the morphology of the intra-articular synovial folds in
the cervical spine. The data that have been collected
are currently being analysed in conjunction with
histological material. Preliminary Magnetic Resonance
Imaging (MRI) experiments have been conducted at
Southampton General Hospital and will continue over
the course of 2003.
The Role of Eye:Neck Coordination in the
Rehabilitation of Cervical Spine Pain
Neil Osborne, BSc(Chiro), DC, FCC(Orth), FRSH
(PhD Candidature, Brighton University)
Over the last few decades, researchers have
noted that individuals reporting chronic neck
pain (especially that of traumatic onset) seem
to have a disruption in the reflexive relationship
between eye and cervical spine movement.
Under normal circumstances, fast gaze (saccades) of
the eyes in the direction of a neck movement
precedes the actual neck movement itself. This
cervico-ocular reflex causes the eyes to fix on an
object and, throughout the full range of the neck
movement, necessarily leads to a slow contralateral
gaze of the eyes. It is this reflex association that some
have noted becomes disrupted in cervical spine pain
patients. Indeed, it has been reported that saccadic
movement may become ‘interrupted’ following a few
days of immobilisation in a cervical collar.
Others have devised exercises to reinforce this
eye:neck relationship and have demonstrated an
improvement in both neck pain and reflex control
following a period of training. Indeed, with practise, it
seems that a blindfolded patient may become better
at the task of accurate head repositioning and be able
to reduce their neck pain in the process.
Whilst more and more work is being developed in this
field, there is a considerable lack of tangible evidence
to clearly underpin the actual relationship between
eye and neck movement. Indeed, it is yet to be firmly
established whether eye movement is truly impaired
in the manner that it is claimed, in neck pain patients.
The aim of this study is therefore to investigate the
relationship between eye and neck movements in
both normal individuals and cervical spine pain
patients.
Study to Document Outcomes Following Cervical Spinal Manipulation
Treatments by Chiropractors
Haymo W Thiel DC, MSc(Orth), DipMedEd, FCCS(C), FCC
(PhD Candidature, University of Portsmouth)
To date there is controversy regarding the risks associated with manipulation to the cervical spine. The evidence
that does exist originates mainly from reviews of individual case studies and medico-legal insurance claims
data. (Haldeman, Carey, Townsend and Papadopoulos, 2001). This study aims to document outcomes
prospectively from a large number of consecutive cervical spine manipulation treatments administered by
chiropractors in field practices. The study is a large-scale observational design, similar to that conducted on
the safety of acupuncture in UK clinics reported in the British Medical Journal in 2001. (MacPherson, Thomas,
Walters and Fitter, 2001; White, Hayhoe, Hart and Ernst, 2001).
The study aims to recruit 500 chiropractors, each of whom will report on either 100 consecutive cervical
manipulation treatments or consecutive cervical manipulation treatments over a six-week data collection
period, whichever is sooner. Outcomes will be monitored immediately following the treatment using a
specifically designed data capture form. This will include patient demographics, type of manipulation and
area of the cervical spine manipulated, change in presenting symptoms and onset of new symptoms. Any
serious adverse event will necessitate the completion of an adverse event reporting form. On the subsequent
visit, data will be captured on treatment-related outcomes that may have occurred in the intervening period.
Again, any serious adverse event will be recorded. The study will be implemented in four phases: i) compilation
of documentation and ethics approval; ii) peer-review; iii) feasibility study; and iv) main study. Data analysis in
the main will be descriptive, but will also include sub-group and time series analyses.
The documentation, which includes Data Collection Forms and an Operations Manual, has undergone extensive
revisions and was finalised in November 2002. Ethics approval for the study was obtained from the University of
Portsmouth and ethical opinion from the Eastern Multi-centre Research Ethics Committee was received in
November 2002. For the second phase, a multidisciplinary peer review panel was constituted, including field
chiropractors, chiropractic and biomedical researchers and statisticians. Following revisions based on these
responses from the panel, the feasibility study will start in summer 2003. This will involve a small number of
randomly selected field practitioners to determine the feasibility of implementing the research design in the
routine practice setting. The main study will begin in Autumn 2003.
Spotlight on Paediatrics
Joyce Miller BS, DC, DACBO, FCC
Senior Clinical Tutor
The Paediatrics Programme at AECC has a new look with the addition of a
Master’s degree. Accredited by Portsmouth University and coordinated by
Joyce Miller as well as featuring numerous acclaimed guest lecturers (see
panel), this three-year part-time programme leads Master’s students to gain
expertise in diagnostic and therapeutic skills to create comfort and satisfaction
in treating the enigmatic problems of the paediatric patient. Upon successful
completion, the Master’s students will lead the profession in qualifications and
expertise to provide optimal care to the smallest members of the family.
Chiropractors pride themselves on the ability to fully
understand the anatomy and biomechanics of the
spine and extremities of the human body in order to
successfully diagnose and manipulate for a healing
outcome. Most undergraduate programmes are
limited in the amount of tuition devoted to the special
health issues of the paediatric population. It is well
documented that children are not merely small adults
and that specialized study is required to create
expertise in this unique arena.
More and more, parents are turning to conservative
therapies for their children, and the profession must
adequately prepare its practitioners to meet the
needs of this patient population. Consistent with
parental demand, there is also a growing demand
from health care workers. According to the AECC electronic data collection system, health care workers refer
44% of paediatric patients less than two months of age. Infants less than six months of age represent the
largest group of paediatric patients presenting to AECC (See Figure 1).
Paediatrics at AECC is taught in a
graduated step-wise fashion. At the base
is a 26 hour required undergraduate
course just before the students enter their
clinical training. The course is designed
to teach the student the necessary skills
to enable him/her to conduct a
meaningful history and examination of
various age groups (between 1 day and
16 years of age) and to assess their
growth and development. It is also
expected that upon completion of the
course, the student will be familiar with
common congenital and acquired
disorders of the paediatric patient (with
emphasis on musculoskeletal and
nervous system disorders) as well as the
social, behavioural and emotional
problems, which are common to
children.
Elective Paediatrics at AECC
While the students are in their clinical year, they are
able to diagnose and treat a wide variety of clinical
disorders in the paediatric
population simply because
there is a large paediatric
patient base that presents
to the clinic. At least 12.4%
(numbering approximately
6200) of the clinic’s patients
are under 16 years of age.
To support the interns, an
elective course is offered
two hours per week in the
clinical year that deals with
all aspects of both routine
and unusual cases that are
seen in the chiropractic
environment. A paediatrician has agreed to consult
on difficult clinical cases that are seen in the AECC
teaching clinic.
Elective and Post-Graduate Paediatric Seminars
at AECC
New in 2002 is an undergraduate elective and
postgraduate seminar series involving all aspects of
chiropractic clinical care of the paediatric patient.
This seminar series is designed for the student or
practising chiropractor that wishes to enhance or
update his or her paediatric education. Issues such as
growth and development, paediatric orthopaedics,
radiology, immunization, foetal development, birth
process and birth trauma as well as treatment for the
pregnant woman are covered in depth in weekend
seminars. Certificate or Diploma level awards are given
depending on attendance and fulfilling educational
requirements.
Master’s Degree
The Master’s degree in Chiropractic Paediatrics serves
as the pinnacle of paediatric education offered at
AECC (see figure below). The Master’s Programme is
itself in its infancy; six students courageously began
this course of study in the autumn of 2002. Weekend
seminar course work imbedded in self-study and
research, the hallmarks of Master’s level study, will
prepare these students to set a precedent for state-
of-the-art clinical care for the paediatric patient.
Chiropractic History:
A New Focus for Research at the AECC
Francis J H Wilson, DC, MSc, FCC
(PhD Candidature, University of Southampton)
Research at the AECC has traditionally focused mainly on clinical and basic science topics, most frequently
employing quantitative methodologies. Recently however, new fields of research and alternative
methodologies have been given serious consideration. The inclusion of chiropractic history as an accepted
field for academic study at the College is a good example of this.
Within the European context, concern was raised in the
1990s that chiropractic history had been widely
neglected by researchers. European chiropractic lacked
detailed written histories. At a General Council Meeting
of the European Chiropractors’ Union (ECU) in May 1997,
it was unanimously agreed that it was essential to begin
working towards just such a history. Dr Kyrre Myhrvold
(1998) wrote: “A profession without a written history is a
spineless profession. Pride and identity in one’s profession
is based on knowledge of the past and the goals for
the future.” 1
The AECC is now taking a leading role in this field. Francis
Wilson, a member of AECC Faculty, is undertaking an
MPhil/PhD in which he is examining the history of
chiropractic’s professionalization in Britain, a project that
is receiving ECU funding. Francis has also been
Francis Wilson at work in the History Library.
instrumental in establishing a History Library at the
College, made possible by financial support from the
Treatment a Month (TAM) Club. Dr Michael Copland-Griffiths, Chairman of the General Chiropractic Council,
officially opened the Library on 7th March 2003. By
coincidence, the most convenient date for the opening
was DD Palmer’s birthday, suggesting that the library might
have the blessing of chiropractic’s Founder!
The library is intended to ensure that available historical
materials are protected for future reference, to ensure that
historical information is readily accessible for interested
parties, and to act as a focus for the collection of
chiropractic historical data from across Europe. It is
intended not only for the use of students and staff at the
AECC, but also for the chiropractic profession as a whole
and those who wish to study it.
Gonstead Master Classes at the AECC
Kent Edlund, DC, BSc, CCSP
Senior Lecturer
Over this last year, the AECC joined forces with the Gonstead Clinical Study Society
(GCSS) in a unique and innovative programme to present a series of seminars on
the Gonstead technique system. The first discussions for the project took place early
in 2001 when Dr Greg Plaugher, the Director of Research for the GCSS, visited the UK and
took time out of his schedule to visit the AECC and present an afternoon technique workshop.
A brainstorming session took place after the workshop about the best method of organising
a presentation of the Gonstead Technique system in the UK. It was decided that a series of
ten seminars over a period of one year presenting the system in a regional approach could
be a viable proposition. That was the beginning of the hard work of organising, co-ordinating,
promoting and presenting the series. Within two months, dates were chosen and ten
chiropractors from six different states in the US were selected as presenters.
By November the series was up and running. The first two weekends were an overall introduction to Gonstead,
presented by, Dr. Greg Plaugher, the editor of “ The Textbook of Clinical Chiropractic, A Specific Biomechanical
Approach and Dr. Mark Lopes who co-edited the book. In the early spring, the regional approach of the
technique series was started by looking at the pelvis, and then working our way up through the body including
weekends on both the upper extremity and lower extremity. Each weekend included assessing, adjusting,
and managing specific conditions for the region discussed. The final weekend of the series addressed the
problems of ‘special populations’ that included geriatrics and paediatrics. To conclude, the final weekend
was a written assessment covering the whole course. To be eligible for the assessment, participants had to
attend at least eight of the ten weekends.
Participants ranged from very experienced field practitioners to student
interns and even a few students in the earlier years at the College who
qualified to attend by their extensive participation in the Gonstead Study
Club at the AECC. All participants seemed to share the same feelings of
accomplishment of the refining of adjustive technique skills. Not only
the students, but practitioners also voiced their appreciation of the
hands-on opportunity to practise and have the opportunity to have
feedback on the refinement of their technique.
We hope that in the future the AECC can collaborate further with the
GCSS to offer more Gonstead weekends. If there is support from the
chiropractic profession during the next several workshops, further
programmes will be scheduled. Hopefully we can continue what we
have started and continue to promote the feeling of enthusiasm for
chiropractic that occurs during each of the weekends.
Presentations at Research Conferences
The AECC has always been well represented at international research conferences. Over the last two
years, Faculty at AECC has made important and significant contributions to the ECU Research Conferences
in Oslo (May 2002) and Heidelberg (May 2003), and to the WFC Conference in Orlando (May 2003).
ECU Conferences-Oslo 2002 and Heidelberg 2003
The 2002 conference was held at the impressive Holmenkollen Park Hotel overlooking the city of Oslo. Five
members of AECC Faculty were invited speakers at the conference, providing approximately one-third of the
conference’s plenary programme, and half of the workshop programme. The 2003 conference was held in the
beautiful town of Heidelberg in Southern Germany. On this occasion, six of the AECC Faculty were invited to
give presentations and workshops, once again making the major contribution to the conference programme.
AECC representatives at the ECU Conference in Oslo 2002.
Front row: Diane Wright, George Rix and Ken Vall. Back row: Jennifer Bolton,
Jane Cook, Alexandra Webb, Kent Edlund, Ed Rothman, and Jeff Bagust
Both these events reflect the expertise of the Faculty at the AECC and the support and contribution that
organisers of the ECU conferences have come to expect from us. The annual ECU Conference is the major
research platform for chiropractic research in Europe. It not only affords members of Faculty the opportunity
to present their work and network with other researchers in the chiropractic profession, but also to demonstrate
our support and commitment to chiropractic research in Europe.
WFC Conference-Orlando 2003
The WFC’s 7 th Biennial Congress was held in early May in Orlando, Florida.
Professor Jenni Bolton and Dr Haymo Thiel represented the AECC and
Professor Alan Breen represented the Institute for Musculoskeletal Research
and Clinical implementation (IMRCI). In addition to making presentations,
we received two research awards. Alan received the prestigious WFC
Research Honour Award for his considerable contribution to chiropractic
research over the last twenty years. Hugh Hurst and Jenni Bolton won
third prize in the original research paper competition for their work on
the “Clinical Significance of Outcome Measures”. Again, our presence
at the Conference and the recognition of our work through these awards
helps maintain our reputation as a chiropractic research centre of
excellence not only in Europe, but throughout the world.
NEW ON–LINE DISTANCE CPD
LEARNING FOR CHIROPRACTORS
WORLDWIDE
The World Wide Web offers a new dimension for distance learning, providing
easy access for self–paced study to chiropractors undertaking CPD
wherever in the world they are. The AECC is making use of internet learning
in CPD, and is now launching its first two innovative distance–based CPD
courses in Radiology.
Geriatric Low Back Pain (author: Dr C Peterson, DC,RN,DACBR,MMEd)
5 (UK) CPD POINTS
Cervical Spine Trauma (author: Dr C Peterson, DC,RN,DACBR,MMEd)
7 (UK) CPD POINTS
Each package can be accessed free on the web at
www.biomedvle.com. This enables access to practice cases
together with model answers.
To undertake the course, chiropractors must register with AECC.
This will give access to a set number of test cases with questions.
Answers are sent by email to the tutor who marks and feedbacks
to the individual. Successful completion of each package is
awarded a Certificate and CPD credits (UK).
An Information Sheet giving full details of how to register with
registration fee can be obtained from the AECC.
Postgraduate Studies
Postgraduate studies at the AECC can be categorised into award-bearing programmes on one hand, and
short courses/workshops on the other. Award-bearing programmes lead to academic qualification such as a
Masters or a Doctorate, and are normally undertaken part-time over a period from three to six years. In contrast,
short courses/workshops are often held over one or two days and are awarded CPD points based on attendance
rather than assessment.
Masters and Doctorate programmes
In 2001, two new postgraduate programmes were developed in collaboration with colleagues at the University
of Portsmouth. The Professional Doctorate (PD) in Chiropractic was based on the unique PD programme
pioneered at the University in Portsmouth to address the need for research at Doctorate level in the wider
context of professional practice, rather than the narrow confines of a monograph thesis typical of the traditional
PhD. The PD allows research students to develop advanced skills in research methods, publication and
dissemination, and CPD, before going on to the second part of the programme in which practice-based
research is carried out and a Doctoral thesis produced. An advantage of this programme is that the first part
of the programme is delivered in a multidisciplinary format in which chiropractors can develop their research
skills alongside other healthcare professionals.
The other new programme, again developed in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Portsmouth,
is the MSc Advanced Professional Development (APD) in Chiropractic. This course enables chiropractors to
develop advanced skills in CPD at the same time as advanced clinical skills within a professional development
framework. Like the PD, the core skills are taught in a multidisciplinary environment, enabling chiropractors to
interact with a variety of healthcare professionals. The first chiropractors were enrolled on the Masters and PD
programmes in September 2001.
In 2002, another new Masters programme was developed at the AECC, this time specifically to meet the
demands for advanced skills in the area of chiropractic paediatrics. Using the framework of the original MSc
APD in Chiropractic, the MSc APD in Chiropractic Paediatrics incorporates core modules in chiropractic
paediatrics. The Course Leader for this programme is Dr Joyce Miller, whose expertise and energy in this subject
area has made the programme a great success. The first cohort of chiropractors was enrolled in September
2002.
Details on all of the above programmes can be obtained from the Department of Research and Professional
Development, AECC.
Short Courses/Workshops
The AECC is a major provider of CPD for the chiropractic profession in the UK, and over the last two years both
the scope of subject areas and the number of events have risen sharply. CPD events are typically held over
one or two days, normally at weekends, and mainly delivered by Faculty at AECC. Subject areas vary from the
academic such as Evidence-based Practice to skills-based such as Dry Needling. In addition, a number of
longer courses have been held such as the Certificate/Diploma in Chiropractic Paediatrics and the Gonstead
Technique Series. A full list of CPD events held in the period September 2001 to August 2003. As shown on page
43 and 44.
An exciting innovation in CPD has been the recent development of distance-based learning packages by Dr
Ian Brown at the AECC. These can be accessed by chiropractors throughout the world on the World Wide
Web, and CPD points awarded for successful completion of the programmes. So far, we have developed two
radiology packages in which chiropractors can work through practice cases before completing test cases
that are then assessed by an expert. We hope that this development marks the beginning of new ways for
chiropractors to learn from their own practices and homes, and so change the face of CPD for the future.
