I NTERO O PERABLE CO O MMUNICATTIONS G APS It was no oted at the No ovember 201 11 meeting of o the advisorry group thatt most of thee transit operrators in the Sac cramento Reg gion operate e with different radio freqquencies and that using exxisting equipment on the ve ehicles is not always possi ible when un nder the commmand of an aagency otherr than itself. IIt was sugge ested that the e immediate solution be the t use of haand held radiios. While thee use of the handheld d radios for ea ach bus oper rator can prevent a lack oof communiccation. It wouuld be preferrred that the lo ocal transit operators o hav ve a single system or systeem that is cappable of commmunicating with the local emergency operations o center or incident commannd post. This repo ort is designe ed to outline the needs of f each of the participatingg transit operrators. If thhere is a mixeed operation n with multip ple buses for several opera ators, the paiiring of busees with like raadio systems may be simple er with this knowledge. k The deve elopment and d testing of Paratransit P In nc.’s mobile ccommunications van is a vvaluable tooll to develop the t practice and a knowledg ge needed pr rior to disasteer operationss. If this tooll is used to, “ “iron out” diffi iculties in dis spatching veh hicles from mixed m fleets tthen knowleddge is gained to improve communi ications flow w during an ac ctual disaster r that requirees more than one transit ooperator to wwork together. The van can n be used to bridge b any co ommunicatioons gaps thatt may occur iif different raadio systems are a used by participating p transit t operat tors. The usee of the commmunications vehicle shouuld include tr raining exerci ise/familiariz zation with th he Sacramennto County EEmergency OOperations Ceenter. The vehic cle is fueled by b diesel fuel l that allows for easy fuelling and mobbility. The vehhicle is owneed by Paratrans sit Inc. Howe ever, the vehi icle should be b displayed tto interested transit operaators in the region to expand the sense of reso ources availab ble to help wwith communnication/disppatching at a disaster in nformation control c site.
