START THE ADVENTURE

WELCOME TO STA TRAVEL
We’ve been sending people off on epic adventures for more than 30 years and, even after
all this time, we’re still convinced that experiencing the wonders of our planet will open your
mind and stretch your horizons. What better way to see the world than from the comfortable
surroundings of a fast, convenient and environmentally-friendly train? We’ve got some great
deals on rail passes worldwide, many of which simply aren’t available once you arrive in your
chosen country, and we’re pretty good at finding you exclusive airfares to go with them, not to
mention accommodation, tours and all the other travel essentials you need when you get there.
TOP TEN REASONS TO RIDE THE RAILS…
5
SAVE $$$!
More often than not, trains are cheaper
than driving or flying, particularly if you
want to check out several countries on one
trip or cover some serious distance.
GO WITH THE FLOW
Missed the 3pm train? Catch the 3.30pm!
Plans always change and rail passes give
you the freedom to travel when and where
you like.
LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Unlike airports, most train stations are in
the heart of cities, so you can spend your
time and money exploring, not on cab fares
and bus rides.
SUPERSIZE YOUR LUGGAGE
Forget about wearing three coats and five
pairs of socks as you check-in your carry-on
bag at the airport; you can take what you
like on the train.
FERRY GODMOTHER
Many rail companies have discount
agreements with local ferry and bus
services, so you can use your pass on the
water and road as well as the tracks.
9
10
GREEN IS THE NEW BLACK
Unless you’re exploring the world by foot or
bike, trains are one of the most eco-friendly
transport options around.
TRAVEL IN STYLE
Stretch your legs, move around and leave
your electronic devices on the whole time,
not just when the seatbelt sign turns off.
IS IT A BIRD? IS IT A TRAIN?
Many of Europe’s trains are marvels of
futuristic engineering with high-speed
routes slashing journey times. And don’t
even get us started on Japan’s awesome
bullet trains!
ROCK UP AND HOP ON
Show up 30 minutes ahead of time and get
straight on the train. No more early
check-ins, long waits in security and
throwing out all liquids over 100ml.
MEET THE LOCALS
Chat with the locals and meet travellers
from around the world who, like you, want
to get the true feeling for a country.
EURAIL
Eurail is a co-operation between 28 European railway companies to hook non-European residents up with
discounted rail travel in Europe. Over the years, 14 million travellers have used Eurail to set off on their big
adventure around Europe. Trains in Europe are reliable, fast and comfortable, whizzing you across borders
with the minimum of fuss. It can, however, get pretty pricey booking lots of individual train journeys, so it’s
much better value to get yourself one of the passes shown over the next four pages. You can’t buy Eurail
passes once you’re in Europe, so work out where you want to go, what you want to see and how long you’ve
got, then buy the pass that’s right for you before you leave home!
EURAIL GLOBAL PASS
Considered the ‘golden ticket’ of European rail travel, giving
flexibility to travel pretty much anywhere in 28 countries, it’s
no surprise to see that the Eurail pass is still going strong.
If you prefer to spend a few days exploring Europe’s amazing
cities indepth rather than being constantly on the move, opt
for a ‘flexi’ pass. This gives you 5-15 days to travel within
either a 10 day or two-month period. You can ride as many
trains as you like on any given day, enjoy free or discounted
ferry travel to get you across the bits where the train doesn’t
go and change your plans as your mood takes you.
If you’d rather throw the rulebook out of the window and see
Europe as spontaneously as possible, opt for a ‘continuous’
pass which allows you to travel wherever and whenever you like
within your chosen pass duration.
• Unlimited rail travel in 28 European countries (Serbia,
Montenegro and Poland are not included)
• Saver prices available when two to five people travel
together on the same pass
• Youth prices apply if under 26 years-old
• When travelling on selected trains (e.g. high-speed, overnight
or peak-time services), advance bookings and/or compulsory
seat reservations are necessary and do sometimes attract a
nominal charge
JAPAN RAIL
Intriguing and mesmerising, Japan has its own unique culture that makes this country like nowhere else on
earth. From the neon lights of Tokyo and geisha girls of Kyoto, to the fascinating history of Hiroshima and the
serene beauty of Mount Fuji, travelling by train is the best way to capture the many flavours and faces of this
captivating destination. Why would you want to miss out on the sights by flying when you can zoom from city
to city so easily and comfortably by train?
BULLET TRAINS
There is simply no better way to get around Japan
than on the world-famous Shinkansen, or bullet
trains, which whizz you effortlessly from the
southern tip of Kyushu to the northern tip of Honshu
at speeds of up to 300km/h. Not just fast, these
wonderful trains are super-efficient, almost silent
and depart so punctually you could set your watch to
the exact second! Arriving into ultra-modern railway
stations puts you right in the heart of all the sights
and sounds you came to experience, ensuring you
don’t waste a minute of your trip.
