ITINERARY
Lima / Paracas
Arrive into Lima, with time to relax before meeting your group. Spend the morning of Day 2 exploring
Lima before catching a bus to Paracas; its lively pedestrian zone is a great place to grab a pisco sour.
Nazca
Rise early for your chance to see abundant wildlife on an optional visit to the Ballestas Islands.
Afterwards, jump on the bus to Nazca where you’ll take a guided tour of a local potter’s studio and a
pre-Inca cemetery, complete with ancient pottery and 1,500-year-old mummies. There’s the option
to fly over the inexplicable desert-imprinted Nazca Lines. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a giant
monkey (supposedly a fertility symbol). On Day 4, catch the overnight bus to Arequipa.
Arequipa / Chivay / Colca Canyon
From Peru’s second-largest city Arequipa, you’ll spy the shadow of El Misti Volcano creeping over the
city’s skyline. A guided tour will take you to explore the Colca Canyon - twice as deep as the USA’s
Grand Canyon. It is also home to the mighty Andean condors whose wingspan reaches an impressive
3 metres (10ft). You’ll stay overnight in Chivay where you can take a dip in thermal springs and watch
live Andean music at a peña. (3B)
Cuzco
Fly over to Cuzco and spend the afternoon getting under the skin of this beautiful colonial city.
Check out the cobblestone streets, interesting museums, colourful markets and the nearby ruins of
Sacsayhuaman (nicknamed ‘sexy woman’). (B)
Sacred Valley / Ollantaytambo
Head down through the picturesque Sacred Valley with your local guide, checking out some of the
fascinating Inca sites along the way. You’ll visit a Planeterra weaving project in a local community and
there will be shopping opportunities at a local market. Spend the evening winding down in the pretty
town of Ollantaytambo, whose narrow streets have been inhabited since the 13th Century. (B, L)
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
From Km 82, the hike of your life begins. With seriously speedy local porters who’ll literally give you
a run for your money, the trek from start to finish will be worry-free, inspiring and a whole lot of
pure, clean fun. Feeling on top of the world you’ll reach Intipunku, the ‘Sun Gate’, just in time to see
Machu Picchu appear as the sun rises and the clouds clear. There’s also the option to climb up to
Huayna Picchu or visit the Inca Bridge before returning to Cuzco by train and van. (4B, 3L, 3D)
Cuzco
Tired from the Inca Trail? Not a valid excuse! Get out there and head off rafting, horse riding or
mountain biking. Possibly you will need an hour or two of down time, in which case there are plenty
of cafés in which to sip a cup of coca tea, and museums galore to wander round. (3B)
Puno
There are lots of sights to be seen on the bus today as you travel through the altiplano to Puno. Spot
the traditional clay bulls atop the rooftops which are used for protection and prosperity. (B)
Lake Titicaca
Cruise across Lake Titicaca to see the Uros Islands and enjoy a guided tour of Taquile Island. Marvel
at the engineering of the floating islands and the surreal silence. There’s also the option to visit the
Sillustani burial site. Stay overnight with a Peruvian family in a typical homestay village. (2B, L, D)
You’ll wind along the shores of Lake Titicaca until you reach La Paz, Bolivia – the world’s highest
capital. For many guests, the bustling street life and lively markets make La Paz one of the surprise
highlights of this trip. Head off for an optional excursion to the Valley of the Moon. (2B)
Uyuni
Take a train and then bus to Uyuni and get yourself prepared for your upcoming three-day 4WD
excursion to the salt lakes. (B)
Uyuni / Salt Lakes Excursion
Hop into a 4WD jeep and begin your explorations of the unforgettable Salar de Uyuni and
surrounding desert altiplano with spectacular scenery. The piercing blue skies and blinding white
salt flats distort the view and make this vast space a perfect location for all you shutterbugs. The
moon-like terrain is some of the most isolated and dramatic geography in South America. This is
once-in-a-lifetime stuff! (3B, 2L, 2D)
Potosí
Explosive UNESCO World Heritage Potosí had a tumultuous history as a silver mining centre during
colonial times. If you dare, descend into a working mine for a close-up look at how it’s all done. (B)
Sucre
Sucre is a lovely town with museums and colonial buildings. It’s home to the Bolivian Government and
a winner for self-confessed history geeks. Get lost in some dinosaur tracks on an optional trip out of
the city. (3B)
Santa Cruz / Puerto Suarez
Fly into Santa Cruz, Bolivia’s second-largest city, located at the foothills of the Cordillera Oriental.
Then bed down on an overnight train bound for Puerto Suarez, one step closer to Brazil. (2B)
Corumba / Pantanal
Eat your hearts out, wildlife lovers! On a two-day exploration with local guides, you’ll travel by jeep
and motorised canoe, getting back to nature amid the immense Pantanal wetlands. Special wildlife
guests include monkeys, macaws, Jabiru storks, giant otters and caiman. (B, 2L, 2D)
Bonito
In a word: beautiful. Snorkel with brightly-coloured fish in crystal-clear rivers and visit underwater
caves and waterfalls. If you need an adrenalin rush then head off rafting. It’s a great place for
outdoor extreme adventurers. (3B)
Iguassu Falls
You’ll cross the vast cattle ranches of Mato Grosso do Sul while travelling overnight to the
magnificent Iguassu Falls. Arriving at the Falls you can sit back and stare, soaking in the beauty and
sheer power of nature unadulterated, or go and get soaked on an optional high-speed boat tour
(which we can pre-book for you before you go) under the spray of the Falls (2B).
Paraty
Fly to São Paulo before continuing by road to Paraty, located on Brazil’s ‘Costa Verde’ (Green Coast).
Cobblestones, cafés and cachaça (the local liquor) are coupled with a pretty historical centre and the
natural beauty of its surroundings. An optional cruise around the beaches and coves will help you
appreciate those cachaça-based cocktails all the more. (2B)
Ilha Grande
Continue by bus up the coast and take a ferry to Ilha Grande, one of the 65 islands that make up this
part of Brazil’s coastline. Let this be a welcome piece of heaven on earth as you near the end of your
trip. Hike through the jungle to waterfalls, soak up the sun on a nearby black sandy beach, hire a
boat and head off to secluded coves and swim in the beautifully clear, warm water. Alternatively, just
hang back with a cold beer in the World Heritage-recognised town centre. (2B)
Rio de Janeiro
The Cariocas, residents of this glorious city, claim ‘God made the world in six days, the seventh he
devoted to Rio’. Highlights include the fantastic views from Cristo el Redentor (Christ the Redeemer),
Pão de Açúcar (Sugar Loaf) and Santa Teresa’s coloured steps. The bright high-on-life atmosphere,
echoed throughout the favelas and along the white beaches will have you buzzing. Explore it all from
your centrally-located hotel in Copacabana, before this life-defining adventure draws to a close on
Day 45. (B)
ITINERARY
Lima
Arrive into Peru’s capital city at any time today, relax at your hotel or head out to explore some of its
vibrant neighbourhoods. This evening, meet up with your Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and the rest of
your group to learn about the five weeks’ worth of adventures that lie ahead!
Paracas / Nazca
Spend the morning exploring more of Lima, which was founded in 1535 and retains a colonial feel
despite its status as one of Latin America’s largest cities. Hop on a bus for the short trip down the
coast to Paracas, where you can sample a healthy seafood ceviche and a glass of Pisco Sour. From
here, you can choose to sail over to the wildlife haven of the Ballestas Islands to observe the sea lion
colonies and Humboldt penguins. Travel on to Nazca, stopping along the way at the oasis of Huacachina
for a visit to a local wine producer and perhaps some optional sandboarding. Nazca is home to the
weird and wonderful Nazca Lines, fascinating symbols and designs that have been etched into the
desert on a vast scale. Some resemble animals, fish and birds, but all of them are best appreciated with
an aerial view so we recommend an optional sightseeing flight to take it all in. Historians debate their
original meaning or purpose, and it’s fun to come up with your own theories! In the evening, enjoy a
traditional Pachamanca meal that is cooked underground, before catching the night bus to Arequipa. (D)
Arequipa / Colca Canyon
Arequipa is Peru’s second city, but maintains a more laid-back atmosphere than the capital. It is also
known as ‘the White City’ due to the light coloured volcanic rock used in its construction. You have a
free day to explore here and the top draws for visitors are the café-lined main plaza and cathedral.
You may also wish to pay an optional visit to the Convent of Santa Catalina, which offers a brief
respite from the outside world and a unique view into a bygone way of life. Spectacular mountains
surround Arequipa and, on Day 6, you can marvel at El Misti Volcano, whose beautiful snow-capped
summit stands at 5,822m (19,096ft). On Day 7, set off for an overnight guided tour to Colca Canyon,
which incorporates a remarkable drive through Inca and pre-Inca terracing. Once at the Colca Canyon,
look out for awesome Andean condors soaring overhead, as well as alpacas, llamas and vicuñas. Drive
back to Arequipa on Day 8, before taking the night bus to Cuzco.
Cuzco / Ollantaytambo
Arriving off the night bus, Cuzco does not disappoint. It is one of Peru’s most attractive cities and
certainly its most popular amongst international visitors. There are great museums, churches and
Inca sites to check out, or, if you want to get your adrenalin pumping, then head off river rafting,
mountain biking or horse riding. You can climb up the hill to Sacsayhuamán (pronounced ‘sexy
woman’) or browse the markets for handicrafts and souvenirs. Travel through the Sacred Valley to
Ollantaytambo where you’ll stay the night before you embark on the Inca Trail. The town’s major Inca
ruin site will sufficiently whet your appetite for what lies ahead.
Inca Trail to Machu Picchu
An undoubted highlight of the trip for anyone brave enough to tackle it, the Inca Trail is a legendary
multi-day hike. You’ll start at Km 82 and, over the next few days trek around 44kms (27 miles),
crossing no fewer than three mountain passes. Warmiwañusca, or Dead Woman’s Pass, is the highest
- standing at 4,198m (13,769ft). This world-famous trail takes you through beautiful cloud forest
and original Inca constructions such as a causeway and tunnel. Take time to absorb the scenery while
your porters race ahead to set up camp. Check your camera batteries for the final day as you head up
to the ‘Sun Gate’ to see the breathtaking sunrise over Machu Picchu - enchanting and epic! Wander
around the remarkable ruins of Machu Picchu with your guide before heading back to Cuzco to rest,
shower and celebrate. (3B, 3L, 3D)
Puno / Lake Titicaca
You’ll travel by bus through the stunning altiplano region to Puno. From here, you’ll take a boat trip
to visit the floating Islands of Uros before immersing yourself in Peruvian rural life with a homestay
in a small village. Take in the extensive views of the lake and enjoy spectacular sunsets, starry skies
and a traditional evening of dinner and dancing. You’ll get a true feel for life on Lake Titicaca. (B, L, D)
La Paz
Cross the border into Bolivia and ascend to La Paz, regarded as one of the highest cities in the world
and situated at nearly 4,000m (13,120ft) above sea level. At this altitude we don’t recommend
anything too strenuous! You have free time to explore La Paz with its many fine museums, religious
buildings and the fascinating Mercado de Hechicería (Witches’ Market), where you can purchase any
number of lotions and potions to remedy your illnesses... real or imagined! There’s a wealth of shops
selling fine alpaca wool products, silver jewellery and woven textiles, so take in a spot of shopping
before boarding the overnight bus to Sucre on Day 22.
Sucre
Often referred to as the ‘White City’, Sucre is Bolivia’s capital and former home of the Spanish Royal
Court, who ruled from here over their vast colonial possessions. Sucre also has strong links with
the Latin American independence movement, gaining its present name in 1825 after General Sucre,
who was Simon Bolivar’s second-in-command. Optional activities here include an excursion to walk
in the footprints of dinosaurs, visits to a tin baron’s mansion or textile co-operative, hiking trails or
mountain bike rides.
Potosí
Travel by bus to Potosí, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with a fascinating history as a silver mining
centre during colonial times. There is time to visit the Casa de la Moneda Museum and for an eyeopening
excursion to the working mines of the Mountain of Silver, where the methods used to extract
this precious metal are unchanged in decades, if not centuries. Much of the silver was shipped
back to Spain, and countless numbers of indigenous people and African slaves lost their lives in the
mines. Perhaps surprisingly, by 1650, Potosí was the most populated city in the world - its 160,000
inhabitants exceeded that of London, Paris, Madrid and other important ‘old world’ cities.
Salar de Uyuni / Salt Flats
The isolated town of Uyuni is the starting point for your salt flats excursion, and you’ll spend the
next three days in 4WD vehicles exploring the stunning landscapes between the Salar de Uyuni and
the Atacama Desert. The contrast of piercing blue skies and blinding white salt on the flat lakebed is
quite unbelievable. The colour palette gets even more vivid at the Laguna Colorada, coloured red due
to algae and plankton, and then at the Laguna Verde which has a striking blue-green appearance due
to mineral concentrations in its waters. The area’s unusual landscape of mountains, active volcanoes,
geysers and moon-like territory is like nowhere on earth. (2B, 2L, 2D)
San Pedro de Atacama
Descend almost 3,000m from the high altiplano of Bolivia, and cross into Chile to arrive at the small
desert resort of San Pedro de Atacama. The town is the gateway to the Atacama Desert, one of the
biggest and driest on the planet. It offers plenty of excursion opportunities like biking, exploring
nearby ruins, horseback riding and visits to the dramatic Valley of the Moon.
Salta
Make your way to Salta, situated in the Lerma Valley in northern Argentina and famous for its
delicious local speciality, the empanada. On Day 13, you can pay an optional visit to the scenic
Quebrada de las Conchas, sample the local wines from the vineyards of Cafayate or experience the
celebrations at a ‘Peña’ folklore show.
Buenos Aires
Today, you’ll skip the long journey to the coast with a quick flight over to Argentina’s stylish capital,
Buenos Aires, which has a distinctly European feel. After an optional city tour, there’s time to explore
at your own pace. Head to some of the diverse neighbourhoods such as San Telmo, colourful La Boca
or stylish Recoleta to really get a flavour of the city and to sample the world’s best steaks and some
of the fine wines for which Argentina has earned a well-deserved reputation.
Buenos Aires
The tour comes to an end today, so it’s time to say goodbye to your new-found travelling buddies.
Lima / Cuzco
Arrive into Peru’s capital at any time, relax and explore before meeting your group in the evening. Fly
to the dizzy heights of Cuzco (elevation: 3,400m) on Day 2. Cuzco is a unique destination that gives
you a taste of an age-old culture and the chance to enjoy high-adrenalin active pursuits. (2B)
Sacred Valley / Ollantaytambo / Aguas Calientes
Marvel at the cleverness of Incan urban planning and engineering, as your guide introduces the
steep terrace system in the Sacred Valley. Visit the local community weaving project where quality,
brightly-coloured cloth is produced. Spend the night in picturesque Ollantaytambo whose impressive
ruined fortress is strategically situated above the Urubamba River Valley. On Day 5, board a morning
train that winds through the spectacular valley to the end of the line: the colourful village of Aguas
Calientes, nestled in the hills at the foot of Machu Picchu. Bathe in its namesake hot springs. (2B, L)
Machu Picchu / Cuzco
Enjoy a guided tour of one of the trip’s highlights; majestic Machu Picchu. Explore the nooks and
crannies and let your imagination bring the Incas to life. Climb up to Wayna Picchu before returning
to Cuzco, where there’s a free day for optional activities such as rafting, horse riding or biking. (2B)
Puno
Travel by bus through the spectacular high altiplano region to Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca.
There are many communities around the lake, including the Uros people who live on ‘floating’ islands
made from layers upon layers of reeds. You’ll also visit Taquile Island with its unique culture, style of
dress and lifestyle; the village men here are renowned for their high quality knitted goods. (2B)
La Paz
Snaking around the shores of Lake Titicaca you’ll cross the Bolivian border and climb to the world’s
highest city, La Paz, to explore its museums, churches and the fascinating Witches’ Market. You can
explore the crater-like formations of the Valley of the Moon on an optional excursion. (2B)
Sucre / Potosí
Fly into Bolivia’s official capital; colonial-style Sucre. This World Heritage Site has been popular for
years - as proven by the 60 million-year-old dinosaur tracks! Potosí is the home of the silver mines
whose wealth was shipped off to Spain until the early 1800s. Take an optional trip underground. (3B)
Salar de Uyuni / Salt Flats
Venture down to Uyuni, the gateway to Bolivia’s expansive salt flats. Jump in a 4WD for three days
exploring the unusual landscapes between the Salar de Uyuni and Chile’s Atacama Desert. Piercing
blue skies contrast with blinding white salt, mountains, active volcanoes and geysers. (3B, 2L, 2D)
San Pedro de Atacama
Descend from the high altiplano and cross the Chilean border to the small town of San Pedro de
Atacama, an oasis in an otherwise barren, dry landscape. There are plenty of optional excursions
here, including biking, exploring nearby ruins, horse riding, and tours of the Valley of the Moon.
Santiago
Fly from Calama to Santiago, Chile’s capital and one of Latin America’s most modern, metropolitan
areas, with its spectacular backdrop of the internationally-recognised vineyards and the snowcapped
Andes. Visit the vibrant neighbourhood of Bellavista with its trendy cafés – the perfect place
to dine on the last night with your group - before your trip comes to an end on Day 22. (2B)
colonial plazas and quaint cobbled streets of this beautiful UNESCO city. Choose to horseback ride,
island hop from beach to beach, visit a typical ‘fazenda’ plantation or raise your spirits at local cachaça
(spirit made from Brazilian sugarcane) distillery. If you don’t already know it as the main ingredient in a
delicious caipirinha, you certainly will by the end of your time here in Brazil! (3B)
Iguassu Falls
On Day 7, travel to São Paolo and catch a flight to the magnificent Iguassu Falls. On the border of
Brazil, Argentina and Paraguay, this UNESCO World Heritage site is one of the planet’s greatest natural
spectacles. Meaning ‘Great Waters,’ Iguassu is made up of hundreds of individual thundering falls that
plunge through jungle from the mighty Iguassu River. To fully appreciate the jaw-dropping splendour, raw
power and majesty of the falls, you’ll visit both the Brazilian and Argentine sides. The Brazilian side has
grand photographic overviews, glancing rainbows and wooded walkways overhanging the canyon, while
the miles of jungle-strewn paths winding around the Argentine side allow you to get up closer for a more
in-depth look at the individual cascades. If you’ve pre-booked the Iguassu Falls Boat Ride, you’ll do this
on Day 8 or 9 when visiting the Argentine side of the falls. Just be sure to pack your poncho if you don’t
want to get soaked, or you could just strip off a few layers! (2B)
Bonito
On the afternoon of Day 9, travel west across the vast cattle ranches of Mato Grosso do Sul to aptlynamed
Bonito (which means ‘beautiful’). The town itself exploded onto the ecotourism scene in the
early 1990s, leading directly to the formation of the Serra de Bodoquena National Park in 2000. It is
still today a model of a well-regulated tourism experience. Awash with crystalline rivers, underwater
caves hung with stalactites and cascading jungle falls, Bonito is a stunning aquatic paradise, its waters
passing through natural limestone filters that deposit any impurities on the river bed, which leaves the
rivers as some of the clearest in the world. During your stay, choose to snorkel eyeball to eyeball with
brilliantly-coloured fish in the emerald swimming holes, explore the waterfalls and caves, raft along the
rivers or simply laze on the banks and relax before the entering the Pantanal for wild adventures on
Day 12. (3B)
Pantanal / Corumbá / Santa Cruz
On Day 12, four-wheel drive into the lush wilderness of the Pantanal. A vast area of flooded wetlands
the size of Great Britain, the Pantanal is lesser-known than the world-famous rainforest habitats of the
Amazon but is Brazil’s best spot to view wildlife. Overspilling with macaws, caiman and capybara (like
a cute, oversized guinea pig), spend two nights at a wilderness camp, taking wildlife excursions from
the camp with boat trips, day and night hikes. A photographer’s and nature lover’s nirvana - search for
howler monkeys, giant otters, anteaters, anacondas and rare big cats including jaguars and pumas. On
Day 14, travel to the town of Corumbá on the border of Brazil and Bolivia, crossing into Bolivia to take
the overnight train to Santa Cruz. Although Santa Cruz is Bolivia’s largest city, it has the sleepy air of
small town. Watch the world go by in the leafy colonial plazas, listen to traditional camba bands and eat
from the tasty street stalls. (4B, 2L, 2D)
Sucre
Fly to Sucre on Day 18. Known as the ‘White City,’ Sucre is Bolivia’s prettiest destination and a UNESCO
World Heritage site. Surrounded by low-lying mountains, Bolivia’s official capital sits in a valley of
whitewashed colonial buildings, cute churches and red-roofed houses. The symbolic heart of the nation
where independence was proclaimed in 1825, Sucre’s museums and monuments are packed with history.
Spend a couple of days soaking up the culture or enjoy a range of local activities. Choose to hike in the
hills, mountain bike, visit a textile cooperative or marvel at the famous dinosaur tracks - a perfectly
preserved cliff face of over 5,000 dinosaur prints and one of the biggest collections in the world. (2B)
Potosí
Travel by bus to Potosí. At 4,070m, Potosí is one of the highest cities in the world. Once the richest
city in the Americas, the silver plundered from the hills surrounding Potosí is said to have propped
up the Spanish Empire for hundreds of years. Grand churches and colonial architecture are evidence
of Potosí’s affluent past, but with such riches comes a horrifying history of African slavery and
nightmarish mining conditions that almost decimated the city’s indigenous population. Over three
centuries of colonial rule, it’s thought that almost eight million people died in the mines. Today, life in
this resilient and friendly city still revolves around the mines, although areas of Potosí remain povertystricken
and the conditions in the mines are still harsh. There’s an option to visit the silver mines if you
wish. (B)
Uyuni / Salt Flats Excursion
On Day 20, journey to the remote and chilly town of Uyuni - gateway to the Salar de Uyuni and the
world’s largest salt flats. Take a three-day 4x4 excursion across some of the most diverse, surreal and
spellbinding landscapes on the planet. Start out by driving across the glaringly-white surface of these
vast dried salt lakes, stopping on cacti-covered islands for fun photos distorted against the blinding
white of the salt and brilliance of the blue skies. Over the following days, marvel at how the terrain
changes into giant rugged desert landscapes. Witness smoking volcanoes, flamingo-filled lakes of vivid
reds and greens, bubbling mud pools and steaming geysers. Instead of staying in basic refuges like
other tour groups, stay in accommodation unique to our trip partners with two nights spent in simple
hotels with solar-powered electricity, hot water and home-cooked meals. On Day 23, travel by bus or
train depending on the schedule to La Paz. (4B, 2L, 2D)
La Paz
Arrive into La Ciudad de Nuestra Señora de La Paz (the City of Our Lady of Peace) - or just La Paz may
be easier! Spread across three miles of the canyon floor with houses sprawled across the surrounding
hillsides, La Paz is a clamorous and colourful delight. Spend your final couple of days exploring the
city’s quirks and hidden corners. Renowned for its markets, visit the Carnival Market where locals
shop for carnival costumes and the world-famous Mercado de Hechicería (Witches’ Market) which sells
all manner of potions and incantations to treat illness and ward off evil spirits. Pick up some local
handicrafts and llama or alpaca woollies to help brave the cold, and silver jewellery and traditional
woven textiles for last-minute presents. There’s an option to take a city tour, visit the world’s highest
ski resort, Chacaltaya (5,600m), or head to the surreal crater-like sand formations in the Valley of the
Moon just south of the city. La Paz’s winding streets are packed with fun bars and friendly locals so
have one final night out with your group before your trip ends on Day 25. (2B)
Rio de Janeiro
Arrive into Rio at any time today, check-in to your hotel and head straight out to explore all that this
vibrant and colourful city has to offer. Rio is one of the most spectacularly-sited cities in the world,
at the base of lush green hills and the dramatic Sugar Loaf Mountain, and straddling its two brilliant
white sandy beaches, Ipanema and Copacabana. Meet your Chief Experience Officer (CEO) and the
rest of your group this evening, and dive straight into this carnival city’s nightlife scene.
Ilha Grande / Paraty
From Rio, head south along the Atlantic coast to the port of Angra dos Reis to catch the ferry over
to the fabulous island retreat of Ilha Grande, with its virgin rainforest parklands. Relax with a cool
caipirinha on the beautiful tropical beaches or try your hand at surfing. Back on the mainland and
heading farther down the coast, you encounter the cosmopolitan colonial town of Paraty, famous for
its centuries-old architecture, beautiful churches and secluded beaches. (2B)
Iguassu Falls
Head to São Paulo and avoid a mammoth 19-hour overland journey by catching the plane to Iguassu
Falls, or Foz do Iguaçu as it’s known in Brazil. Iguassu Falls forms the border of Brazil, Paraguay and
Argentina and you can get the grand overview from the Brazilian side before crossing over to the
Argentinian side for a closer look. Fill an enjoyable couple of days here with optional boat rides to
the base of the Falls or visiting the bird park. On Day 9, you’ll travel by overnight bus to Salto. (B)
Estancia Stay
Cross into Uruguay for a taste of rural life at a local estancia (ranch), where you can get your hands
dirty participating in farming activities, go hiking or explore the area on horseback. Alternatively, sit
back and relax with a nice glass of wine over a typical barbecue dinner. (B, 2L, 2D)
Montevideo / Colonia
Spend some time in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, which was founded by the Spanish in
1726 and is home to more than half the country’s population. Montevideo is a modern city with a
lively atmosphere where you can grab a chivito beef sandwich at the Port Market and explore the
fascinating Carnival Museum. Travel along the banks of the Rio de la Plata to the charming city of
Colonia del Sacramento, to explore its cobblestone streets and soak up its relaxed atmosphere. (3B)
Catch the ferry across the Rio de la Plata to cross into Argentina and reach the dynamic city of
Buenos Aires, whose famously stylish and sophisticated streets are reminiscent of the glamorous
cities of Europe. So much so, in fact, that Buenos Aires is known as the ‘Paris of the Americas’. It’s
also the birthplace of tango, so make sure you catch a show at one of the famous tanguerías. Take
time out to explore the city’s many varied districts to really get a taste of local life - we’d recommend
La Boca for its colourful houses, upmarket Recoleta for its thriving café culture or San Telmo for its
talented street artists.
Salta
Once again, save yourself a long (and boring!) overland trip by flying to the happening city of Salta,
situated in the Lerma Valley in northern Argentina and famous for its tasty empanadas. Check out
the barren sandstone landscapes of the Quebrada de las Conchas, canyons of multi-coloured rock
strata exposed by river erosion, on the way to Cafayate. Known for its vineyards and fine cuisine, the
popular resort of Cafayate is also home to many young craftspeople and artists, so it’s a good place
to stock up on some interesting souvenirs. Catch the overnight bus on Day 19 towards Chile. (B)
San Pedro de Atacama
Arrive into the arid region of northern Chile for a two-night stay in the little town of San Pedro de
Atacama, the gateway to the Atacama Desert. There are lots of optional excursions such as biking,
horse riding and exploring the nearby ruins. You can also take an optional tour to the lunar-like
landscape of the Valley of the Moon, whose craters and dunes are brilliantly illuminated at sunset. (B)
Salar de Uyuni / Salt Flats
Climbing almost 3,000m up to the altiplano region, jump in a 4WD vehicle and embark on a three-day
desert crossing into Bolivia. Travel through the stunning landscapes that lie between the Atacama
Desert and the Salar de Uyuni, where the unusual mountains, active volcanoes, geysers, bubbling
mud pools and multi-hued lagoons are like nowhere else on earth. Twice submerged by a large,
high-altitude lake, the blindingly white salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni offer stunning views of saltencrusted
lakebed surrounded by snow-capped peaks under a beautiful blue sky. (2B, 2L, 2D)
Potosí / Sucre
The city of Potosí is a UNESCO World Heritage Site in recognition of its important but often tragic
role in the colonial silver mining industry. Native workers and slaves from Africa worked underground
in appalling conditions to produce large quantities of precious silver, much of which was shipped
back to Spain. There is time here for an optional, eye-opening visit to a working silver mine. Travel
by overnight bus to Sucre, Bolivia’s beautiful capital and former headquarters of the Spanish Royal
Court. Optional activities include biking and a chance to see dinosaur footprints. On Day 29, board
the overnight bus to La Paz, the largest city in Bolivia and the highest city on earth. (5B)
La Paz / Puno / Lake Titicaca
Spend a couple of days exploring La Paz, with its many fine museums and religious buildings and
head to the Mercado de Hechicería (Witches’ Market) where you can cure your ailments with a herbal
remedy, or ward off evil spirits with mysterious secret potions. Drive the impressively scenic route
around the deep blue waters of Lake Titicaca and cross to the Peruvian town of Puno from where
there’s an overnight excursion to visit the floating Uros Islands and to enjoy a family homestay on
Taquile or Amantani Island. This is a great opportunity to experience a rich and unique culture. (4B)
Cuzco / Ollantaytambo / Inca Trail
Travel by bus to Cuzco, the capital of the Inca Empire, whose noble past and age-old traditions have
long been a magnet for any traveller to Peru. There’s free time for optional city tours, whitewater
rafting, horse riding or mountain biking. Learn about the Sacred Valley on the way to the small town
of Ollantaytambo, which offers the major Inca ruin site of Pisac. A good night’s sleep is in order
so that you’re well rested for the start of the world-famous Inca Trail. Over four days, you’ll be
physically challenged on this 44km (27 mile) trek, starting from Km 82 and crossing three mountain
passes, the highest of which is at an elevation of 4,200m (13,776ft). Porters run on ahead with the
majority of the gear, so you’re free to admire the spectacular views of cloud forest and lesser-known
Inca sites such as Llactapata and Phuyupatamarca, or ‘Town Above The Clouds’. On the final day, rise
early to reach the famous ‘Sun Gate’ to see the breathtaking sunrise over Machu Picchu. Explore the
site with your knowledgeable guide before returning to Cuzco to rest and recuperate. (7B, 3L, 3D)
Arequipa / Colca Canyon
Peru’s second city of Arequipa maintains a colonial charm and the older buildings here dazzle in the
sun, thanks to the light coloured volcanic rock used in their construction. You may also be able to
glimpse of El Misti Volcano whose beautiful snow-capped peak stands at 5,822m (19,096ft). History
buffs will enjoy an optional visit to the Convent of Santa Catalina, which offers a unique view of life
in bygone times. On an overnight excursion to the dramatic Colca Canyon, the deepest in the world,
you can enjoy the stunning highland scenery whilst looking for soaring condors. (2B)
Nazca / Paracas
Travel north to one of the world’s greatest archaeological mysteries, the Nazca Lines - perfect
patterns etched into the desert on a massive scale. Depictions of birds, insects and animals are
recognisable from the air, so an optional sightseeing flight is highly recommended. Who drew the
lines, and why, remain unanswered but latest thinking points to some kind of complex agricultural
calendar. Enjoy a ‘Pachamanca’ style meal here, which involves burying food in banana leaves and
cooking it underground on pre-heated rocks. Travel north to Paracas for an optional visit to the
penguin and sea lion sanctuary of the Ballestas Islands. (D)
Lima
Travel on to Peru’s capital for one last night with the group before this epic tour ends on Day 51. (B)
