Gutsy Red Raiders fell
By Robert Sorrels
Patagonia 56, Ajo 24
This is a story of adversity, a
tale of refusing to quit. The Red-
Raiders went to Patagonia Friday
night, leaving behind 3 injured
starters and 5 players who - because
they had discipline referrals
- were ineligible. Coach Brian
English’s rule is simple, “You
must be academically eligible
and a good citizen to play.” So far
this year the team has done well
on academics. Not a single player
lost to grades. Last week five
team members forgot they were
citizens of a community with
both rights and responsibilities
and thus forfeited the privilege to
play. Two Raider starters played
hurt including Jake Lopez, the anchor
of the Ajo line.
It started great as Billy Glass
took the opening kickoff 85 yards
to score. The Lobos, who feature
a big, fast quarterback, struck
back. He rolled out on the keeper
going all the way. Ajo marched
back down field as Glass scored
his second TD on a nice running
play. The two teams were even in
the 1st. Then Ajo tired and had
to substitute JV players. Often 8
freshmen were on the field.
In the 2nd quarter, Patagonia
exploded with 5 touchdowns using
basically two plays: sweep
right and the quarterback keeper.
Ajo had a good offensive series
moving 70 yards with Glass scoring
his third TD. Other than that it
was all Lobos: 50-18 at the half.
After the break, the Raiders
stiffened as they held the Lobos
to a single TD. Manny George
turned a broken play into an
80-yard scamper for Ajo’s final
touchdown.
English noted, “We hate to
lose, but all you can do is the best
you can. I’m proud of these guys’
effort. It’s trite, but they left everything
on the field.”
Despite the loss, there were
heroes. Lopez limited by injury
played hard. “Jake was a man.”
his coach complimented. Glass,
healthy for the first time, had 150
yards and 3 TDs. Devon Rendon
(at 5’4” and maybe 130 pounds)
played tight end and repeatedly
did his best to block a 6’ 200-
pound lineman. Manny George
with his line breaking down stood
in to execute the play and take the
hit. “Manny was the leader,” English
noted.
This team has 10 freshmen.
They are learning by fire. If they
continue to show this dedication
and effort, they will be contenders.
As for the five who didn’t
keep their noses clean in school?
Gentlemen, you let your teammates
down.
