Nominations for Western Pima County Community Council
representatives of odd-numbered districts will be accepted
throughout November, with election taking place at the
Thursday, December 6, meeting. All new candidates must
be a legal resident of the district they seek to represent, be
a registered voter in Arizona, submit a notarized statement
declaring the candidate has not been convicted of a felony or
crime involving fraud, and submit a one-page resume listing
qualifications. Qualifications should include education, work
experience or any previous community involvement, and a
paragraph on the goals they envision for western Pima County.
Candidates for reelection must submit a form stating their
intention to run and a statement declaring that the previous
notarized statement is still true. All paperwork must be
completed and received by the election committee two weeks
prior to the election.
Local healthcare
is topic for talk
Desert Senita Community
Health Center is helping to sponsor
a public forum on healthcare
issues scheduled for Tuesday, October
9, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in the
Ajo Ambulance training room.
The forum, called A Community
Conversation on Healthcare, will
include a variety of healthcare
providers and policy makers from
the Office of Rural Healthcare,
Children’s Action Alliance, and
other agencies along with a number
of legislators. It is free and
open to the public.
It will be a time to share ideas
about healthcare priorities for
families and the community as
a whole. DSCHC director Fran
Driver said some examples
might include the desire for a
local physical therapy department,
home health and assistance
in daily living, or some medical
specialty service that is currently
lacking in the area.
The discussion may cover possible
changes in the Medicaid
system and the Affordable Care
Act, among other policy issues.
Driver said it is important for
as many community members to
attend as possible.
“The more that state agencies
are aware of our needs, the more
likely we are to receive funding
for those services,” she said.
CPR is changing,
still saving lives
CPR standards are changing.
Continuous chest compression
resuscitation is replacing the
former approach of combining
chest compressions with rescue
breaths. Continuous chest compression
is simple and does not
require mouth-to-mouth contact,
making it more likely that bystanders
will try to help, according
to websites of the University
of Arizona College of Medicine
where it was developed.
While aspirin is touted as an
immediate remedy, reputable
sources, such as the American
Heart Association, advise calling
911 immediately, waiting no
more than five minutes after the
chest pain starts. If aspirin is taken,
it should be done after 911 is
called.
“The more important thing to
do if any heart attack warning
signs occur is to call 911 immediately.
Don’t do anything before
calling 911. In particular, don’t
take an aspirin, then wait for it
to relieve your pain. Don’t postpone
calling 911. Aspirin won’t
treat your heart attack by itself,”
according to the www.heart.org
the American Heart Association’s
website, which notes that ambulance
personnel will normally
give aspirin as part of their chest
pain treatment.
The AHA cautions against
aspirin if a stroke is suspected.
“Taking aspirin isn’t advised
during a stroke, because not all
strokes are caused by blood clots.
Most strokes are caused by clots,
but some are caused by ruptured
blood vessels. Taking aspirin
could potentially make these
bleeding strokes more severe.”
Ajo Museum
getting ready
for new season
The Ajo Museum is getting
ready for a new season. Though
a board meeting has been postponed,
efforts to spruce the museum
up are going ahead.
A volunteer cleanup will be
held on Saturday, October 13,
starting at 9 a.m. Helping hands
and cleaning supplies are needed,
says curator Louie Walters, who
says they hope to have everything
in order to be open by the Red &
White Weekend.
Beginning October 19, the
museum will be open daily from
noon to 4 p.m. except for some
holidays. There is no entrance fee
but donations are needed to offset
operating and maintenance costs.
Volunteers are welcome and
should contact Walters.
The Ajo Historical Society
board meeting has been rescheduled
from October 9 to November
13 at the museum.
AUSD board
meets next week
The Ajo Unified School
District board will have its study
session meeting Tuesday, October
9, and meet in regular session
Wednesday, October 10. Both
meetings begin at 5:30 p.m.
Meetings are held in the board
meeting room on the AUSD
campus. All meetings are open to
the public.
