All that is known for sure about this owl is it and a freind was
released in Walker Park. Dan Johnson snapped the picture just
mintues before it was set free.
No one the newspaper asked seemed to know the owls’
provenance although it was believed Game & Fish was the
agency making the release.
Collective of local gardeners is
backbone of Ajo CSA project
The Coyote Gardens CSA, a
project of the Ajo Center for Sustainable
Agriculture, is a collective
of local gardeners growing in
backyard and demonstration gardens
around Ajo. CSA in this case
stands for community supported
agriculture, a direct-sales model
that eliminates the middleman
and builds a close relationship
between growers and consumers,
according to Peter Altshul of the
CSA.
CSA gardeners grow more
than 40 varieties of produce as
well as numerous herbs and flowers
using companion planting and
intercropping to conserve water
and space, and to achieve natural
pest and disease protection. Some
CSA produce is available for sale
at Second Saturdays farmers markets,
but the main purpose of the
project is to build community in
Ajo through sharing the garden
bounty, work, and knowledge
with members.
“It’s not just about knowing
what goes into your food and how
it gets from the garden to your
table,” said Altshul. “It is also
about knowing that a grower is
fairly compensated, growing the
community, where locally-earned
dollars stay in the community and
make an economic impact, connecting
the past with the future,
reviving old growing practices
and plant varieties and sharing
them with the next generations,
sitting down together over good
food, building relationships and
lending a hand to a neighbor in
need, and taking care of our environment
and future generations.”
Growing for neighbors allows
Coyote gardeners to customize
vegetable production to a member’s
specific wishes and to keep
the feedback cycle close to home.
The Ajo Center for Sustainable
Agriculture says they are
aware that organic produce is
outside of the budget for many
Ajoites. Therefore they are work-
ing to make produce available
at reasonable prices through the
CSA, farmers market and workfor-food
programs, using food
stamps and other assistance programs,
as well as offering financial
help and technical assistance
with installing backyard gardens
so families can grow their own.
Coyote Gardens is Ajo Center
for Sustainable Agriculture’s
pilot project for its Small Growers
Incubator program, which is
designed to help gardeners learn
how to grow and prepare food for
sale. Anyone interested in becoming
a small grower or a Coyote
Gardens grower, or just volunteering
in the gardens, can obtain
more information at ajocsa.com
online and from Peter and Nina
Altshul at 387-3132. T h e
Altshuls invite everyone to join
them at the Center’s Gardening
Festival, which will be held at the
courtyard garden behind the Curley
School on Saturday, October
6 at 4 pm.
In addition to the festival, a
meeting for vegetable growers is
set for October 6 at 10 a.m.
Wildlife crossings
to be built near
Kitt Peak
Two under-crossing structures
are planned for construction near
the Kitt Peak intersection with
Highway 86. The crossings are
being built to reduce the number
of animal-vs-vehicle accidents in
the area, now figured at roughly
20% of all crashes along the highway
near the observatory site.
ADOT says the crossings will
be built in conjunction with an
ongoing highway-widening project.
Controversy surrounding the
effort centers on planned costs,
which have soared by 60%, according
to an Arizona Daily Star
report, and are now expected
to reach $1.2 million. The RTA
will come up with an additional
$154,000 and ADOT $291,000 to
cover the added expenses.
Allergies increasing
Rising temperatures and higher
carbon dioxide levels in the
atmosphere are lengthening the
allergy season and changing how
plants produce allergens, according
to researchers. In addition,
rising temperatures combined
with vehicle pollution can trigger
more ground-level ozone -- a
pollutant that causes respiratory
problems -- especially in urban
areas that already suffer from
poor air quality.
