Bariatric<br />
Bariatric <strong>equipment</strong> is becoming ever more prevalent in the healthcare market but what is<br />
<strong>bariatric</strong>s and what is <strong>bariatric</strong> <strong>equipment</strong>?<br />
Bariatrics deals with causation, the prevention and also the treatment <strong>of</strong> obesity in <strong>our</strong> community. With the current rise <strong>of</strong><br />
obesity in <strong>our</strong> population, <strong>equipment</strong> needs have changed and there has been a demand to provide <strong>equipment</strong> in different<br />
configurations to meet these needs. <strong>Aidacare</strong> in conjunction with VicBIG* state that a Bariatric client may have one or more <strong>of</strong><br />
the following characteristics:<br />
• Weight Capacity > 125 kg<br />
• Body Mass Index (BMI**) > 35<br />
• Seat Width > 20” (50cm)<br />
If one or more <strong>of</strong> these characteristics are present or anything else that is relevant, then an assessment <strong>of</strong> the client is required<br />
by their health pr<strong>of</strong>essional. There are many variations to these characteristics but recognising the need to provide suitable<br />
<strong>equipment</strong> for Bariatric clients is paramount to the safety <strong>of</strong> the client as well the family, carers and health pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.<br />
Bariatric <strong>equipment</strong> is designed to assist in:<br />
• Pressure management for the client<br />
• Heat management for the client<br />
• Effective weight distribution on the seating surface<br />
<strong>Aidacare</strong>’s Bariatric <strong>equipment</strong> <strong>range</strong> has been developed with <strong>our</strong> suppliers to ensure <strong>our</strong> <strong>range</strong> includes larger seat widths,<br />
increased weight capacities and reinforced construction materials to meet the specific needs <strong>of</strong> the user.<br />
