About Dundee’s West End
A cosmopolitan corner of Dundee taking in both the city’s ‘Cultural Quarter’ and the campus
of Dundee University, the West End is witnessing the transformation of the city of Dundee
at frst hand.
Once home to the industry of the old Dundee, the West End is now a thriving and vibrant
example of how the new city is looking ahead to the future with confdence. The West End
mixes both the best of the traditional and the modern: architecture refects its industrial
past and wealth, while new housing and academic buildings are being developed rapidly.
Near to the city centre but with a real sense of its own identity, the West End caters for
both young and old with its mix of facilities and excellent transport links.
And the West End enjoys a great reputation for quality. Stunning views of the River Tay from
the beautifully-restored bandstand at Magdalen Green and cosy cafes and traditional pubs
along Perth Road are enjoyed by people from across the city and visitors alike.

facilities that are used by people from across the
city and beyond.
Ninewells Hospital is the major medical facility
for the wider area, and is home to the medical
school of the University of Dundee. Just beside
the hospital sits the Maggie’s Centre, an architectural
wonder that has drawn attention from
around the globe. The building, designed by
leading world architect Frank Gehry, provides a
special centre for cancer patients.
Dundee Airport, situated at Riverside, provides
daily flights to London City Airport, linking the
rivers Tay and Thames.
The West End is also blessed with a number of
superb parks. Balgay Park is home to the Mills
Observatory, Britain’s only full-time public
observatory, which runs an excellent programme
of activities and educational programmes.
Victoria / Balgay Park is also one of the most
beautiful green spaces in the city.
Magdalen Green offers excellent views of the
River Tay and is the location of an excellent
restored bandstand, where summer concerts
draw enthusiastic crowds.
There is also the University of Dundee’s excellent
Botanic Gardens, where plants from across the
world are grown and displayed in expertly-tended
environments.
