It was foundedas a Maricopa County dairy farm in the 1930s bybrothers Lynn and Olen Sharp. Second-generation ownersClyde and David Sharp grew up on that farm, and bothhave a deep commitment to the agriculture industry. The Sharp brothers are well known in their community.David serves on the Arizona Grain Research Council andthe local irrigation board, and is active in local and statefarm bureaus. Clyde serves on the board of the ArizonaCotton Growers Association, is current president of theAmerican Cotton Producers, and is a member of a nationalcommittee which, in a joint effort with Mexico, is focusedon eradication of the boll weevil and pink boll worm.Big balers from Hesston have been a fixture at Lyreedalefor over 30 years. The farm’s long relationship withHesston began in the 1970s, when the elder Sharps wereseeking a more efficient, cost-effective way to harvest, feed and transport their crops. They were thinking aboutbuilding their own large baler when Hesston invited Lynnand David to be part of a group of growers previewing theprototype of a 4x4x8 baler package. Only Lynn and sonDavid saw potential in the new machine. Several monthslater, a group from Hesston came to Lyreedale Farms tofinish developing a machine that would bale, haul and feedforage crops. The Sharps provided input and feedbackthroughout the development process, and they were thefirst to test and run the finished machine. It performedwell, and in the decades that followed the Sharps ran 4x4Hesston/Challenger Big Balers on a four-to-five-year tradecycle. In 2012, the Sharps switched to a 3x4XD baler packageafter running a prototype. The XD package allows themto maintain high packaging standards and expand theiropportunity in the growing export market. In April 2012,Lyreedale Farms took delivery of two Challenger 3x4XDbalers with the latest technology, including bale RFtagging, preservation application, moisture monitoring andlive video at the rear of the baler.Along with productive machines, Lyreedale’s operationdepends on service and support from manufacturersClyde and David SharpOur biggest challenge is water. Residentialgrowth and development requires a lot of water tosupport the populace. As central Arizona grows, outlying (agricultural) areas are asked to makeup for their increased water use. Most peopletoday don’t understand what it takes to producequality food: they are three or four generationsremoved from the farm industry. The populationdepends on agriculture, but less than 2% areactually involved in it.Clyde SharpLyreedale Farmsand dealers. David said he’s pleased with the level ofsupport he receives from both Empire Ag’s Yuma teamand AGCO, but he made it clear that excellent support is arequirement in Yuma County.“You can have the best machine in the industry, but it’snothing without the parts and service to support it,” saidDavid. “Yuma growers have high standards, and thereare always other dealers campaigning to support us,” headded. “We expect our dealers to perform.”Lyreedale has been a verypositive influence on me as anAgriculture Account Manager. For 20 years I have watchedthem personify forward thinkingin a demanding, ever-changingindustry. The Sharps have alwayssupported Agriculture: working with manufacturersto develop new equipment, cooking BBQ at thelocal FFA Banquet, and everything in between.Jeremy MannAccount Manager, Empire Agriculture14 | acres acres | 15
