Not only did that first GLEANER introduceone-man harvesting, but it represented the first use of anauger instead of canvas drapers; a rasp-bar threshing cylinderinstead of a spike-tooth arrangement and a down-front cylinderthat put threshing closer to the crop. All were innovationsthat changed harvesting forever.Patent No. 1,702,323 wasn’t the Baldwin brothers’ first andonly idea, though. As early as 1911, Curtis Baldwin recognizedthe inefficiency of “transporting the field to the thresher,”instead of the other way around. His search for a bettersolution led to the Standing Grain Harvester, which was atrailblazer in the concept of field harvesting.GLEANER continued to pioneer new concepts throughmost of the 20th century—as other combine brands came andwent—introducing the country’s first standing corn combine in1930; the first combine with electro-hydraulic controls in 1972,the first and only combine with a transverse rotor in 1979 andthe industry’s first Class 7 combine and 12-row cornhead in 1980.H i s t o r y
