Frequently Asked QuestionsFormulation and Mode of ActionWhat is Festival?Festival is a contact and residual herbicide for the control of a wide range ofweeds in ornamental trees and shrubs. What is the formulation type of Festival?Festival is available as a liquid emulsifiable concentrate (EC) formulation forspray application only. What is the active ingredient in Festival?Festival contains 25% oxadiazon which is a widely used residual and contactherbicide. How does Festival work? When applied to the soil Festival is adsorbed by the soil colloids forming aherbicidal layer through which germinating weeds must pass: they absorb thechemical through the shoot and subsequently die. Therefore the soil shouldremain undisturbed after treatment. Will Festival control established weeds?Festival is a pre-emergence and post-emergence herbicide. For optimum postemergence control application should ideally be at the 1-2 leaf stage. For largerweeds a higher water volume will be required to ensure full spray coverage. Is Festival absorbed by the roots of ornamental trees and shrubs? No, Festival is not absorbed to any extent by plant roots. Will soil type affect the efficacy of Festival? No, the activity of Festival is largely independent of soil type and texture, butbecause of the wide range of potting mediums used in the industry somevariations in persistence and effectiveness may occur. Is Festival safe to be used in public areas used by the public and theirpets?Festival has passed all the tests to show it will not pose an unacceptable risk topeople or pets if used according to the label instructions. As with all plantprotection products for amenity use people and pets can enter treated areasonce the spray has dried.Bayer Environmental Science, 230 Cambridge Science Park, Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WB.Telephone: 00800 1214 9451 www.escience.bayercropscience.co.ukALWAYS READ THE LABEL. Frequently Asked QuestionsApplicationDo I need a certificate to apply?Yes, Festival is for professional users only so the relevant certification is requiredfrom the NPTC.When is the best time to apply Festival?Any time between January and the end of June is ideal. Can I apply Festival to bare ground?Yes, Festival is effective when used on bare ground under and aroundornamental trees and shrubs. Can I cultivate the ground afterwards? No, the soil should remain undisturbed after treatment. Best results are obtainedwhen Festival is applied to a lightly compacted bare soil surface. What if the area to be treated is going to be or has been mulched?Application to existing mulches can reduce the activity of some residualherbicides. This is because when dry (such as in the summer), the mulch can"shrink" forming cracks in the surface through which weeds can protrude andavoid the residual barrier formed. Bayer tip - where mulches are to be appliedideally apply Festival before applying the mulch. What are the tank mix recommendations for Festival?Festival can be tank mixed with Finale at the full label recommended rates. Can I mix 4L/ha of Festival with the full rate of Finale to get control?Yes, however some weeds such as annual meadow-grass need the full rate ofFestival for adequate pre-emergence control. Please follow the label instructionsfor both products when tank mixing. The water volume I can use varies between 300 and 1000 L/ha how do Iknow how much to use?A higher water volume is needed for dense infestations of weeds. Completewetting of the foliage is essential.Bayer Environmental Science, 230 Cambridge Science Park, Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WB.Telephone: 00800 1214 9451 www.escience.bayercropscience.co.ukALWAYS READ THE LABEL. Frequently Asked QuestionsCan I use Festival as a spot treatment?Yes, if you are intending a spot treatment you should use a dilution rate of 100mlof Festival in 10 litres of water and apply over 125m 2 or 250m 2 depending on thedose required. For example, spot treatment is ideal when treating bindweed inMay.Should I use a spray shield to protect plants from drift? This can be used for added protection, so long as the spray is targeted onto thesoil there should be no damage to the foliage of ornamental trees and shrubs. However, all green plant parts should be avoided. Will the active ingredient move in the soil if there is heavy rainfall? No, Festival is stable in the soil once applied. In fact Festival works better inmoist conditions and rainfall or irrigation will give optimum residual activity. Will Festival work in dry conditions? In dry soil pre-emergence activity of Festival will be reduced, particularly onperennial broad-leaved weeds. Festival is reactivated when moisture returns. Will Festival control my perennial weeds?Yes, Festival will keep perennial weeds at bay if applied as a pre-emergencespray or at the 1-2 leaf stage. Difficult weeds which are re-generating from alarge root base (e.g. nettles, docks and thistles) are likely to grow back thereforea post-emergence tank mix application with Finale is recommended. Can I spray Festival under hedges?Yes, when spraying under hedges, care should be taken to avoid drift ontofoliage and green plant parts where damage could occur. Can I apply Festival along a fence line?Pistol is the product of choice for fence lines. Festival is approved for use underand around ornamental trees and shrubs so Festival can actually be used inhedgerow situations (please see the species list at the end of this document).Selectivity to Ornamental Trees and ShrubsWill Festival affect my existing shrubs?Festival is very safe to use around existing shrubs but care should be taken toavoid contact with new shoots or leaves. Please see the table at the end of thisdocument for a full list of tolerant species.Bayer Environmental Science, 230 Cambridge Science Park, Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WB.Telephone: 00800 1214 9451 www.escience.bayercropscience.co.ukALWAYS READ THE LABEL. Application around anyspecies which is not listed is entirely at users own risk. How long will the product last?If the soil is not disturbed and kept moist and the label instructions followedFestival should give pre-emergence control of weeds throughout most of theseason (at least 4-6 months).I have a Christmas tree nursery can I use Festival around my trees?Yes, Festival has full approval for use under and around ornamental trees andshrubs which includes Christmas tree plantations. Can I spray over the top of dormant ornamental trees and shrubs?Over spraying of ornamental trees and shrubs is not recommended. Festival isbest applied as a directed spray under and around the base of ornamental treesand shrubs avoiding any green plant parts. Can Festival be used around plants of any age?Festival may be used around newly planted or established woody trees andshrubs (including roses) in amenity areas and nurseries. Festival should not beused around annual herbaceous plants (although some species are tolerant). Can Festival be used around container grown plants?Yes, Festival may be applied to both newly transplanted and establishedcontainer grown ornamentals. Container grown plants should not be sprayedoverall. The “standing-out” ground may also be treated before stocking withcontainers. How long do I have to wait until planting subsequent crops in soil treatedwith Festival?Where sites treated with Festival are cleared or grubbed up a period of at least 6months should elapse between treatment at 4L/ha and at least 12 months shouldelapse between treatment at 8L/ha and the sowing or planting of subsequentcrops. The soil should also be ploughed or dug afterwards to ensure thoroughmixing in order to remove any risk of damaging subsequent crops.Bayer Environmental Science, 230 Cambridge Science Park, Milton Road, Cambridge, CB4 0WB.Telephone: 00800 1214 9451 www.escience.bayercropscience.co.ukALWAYS READ THE LABEL.
