ForewordThis paper has been produced as part <strong>of</strong> the activities <strong>of</strong> the TRKC (<strong>Transport</strong> <strong>Research</strong>Knowledge Centre) project <strong>of</strong> the Sixth Framework Programme, priority thematic area“<strong>Sustainable</strong> Development, Global Change and Ecosystems”.The aim <strong>of</strong> TRKC (as with its predecessor project EXTR@Web) is to collect, structure,analyse and disseminate transport research results. It covers EU-supported research aswell as research financed nationally in the European <strong>Research</strong> Area (ERA) and selectedglobal RTD programmes. The main dissemination tool used by TRKC is the web portal atwww.transport-research.info.The approach to dissemination <strong>of</strong> results <strong>of</strong> research projects adopted by the TRKC teamincludes the following three levels <strong>of</strong> analysis:• Project Analysis, which provides, project by project, information on researchbackground, objectives, results, technical and policy implications;• Thematic Analysis, which pools findings <strong>of</strong> research projects according to aclassification scheme based on thirty themes, fixed for the life time <strong>of</strong> the TRKCproject; the product <strong>of</strong> this analysis activity is the set <strong>of</strong> Thematic <strong>Research</strong>Summaries (TRS); the present document belongs to this set;• Policy Analysis, which pools findings <strong>of</strong> research projects according to combinations <strong>of</strong>themes based on ad-hoc policy priorities which are agreed with DGTREN <strong>of</strong> theEuropean Commission and a representative group <strong>of</strong> research users.This particular Thematic <strong>Research</strong> Summary deals with the environmental aspects <strong>of</strong>transport and sustainable mobility. The aim is to provide the reader with a synthesis <strong>of</strong>results <strong>of</strong> completed European projects related to the theme <strong>of</strong> environmental aspects.
