Part-Time Nursing Program Application Guide – Winter 2013examination as a means of meeting the language requirement count in the credit hours for prerequisitesor for the degree. American Sign Language is an accepted language to meet the language requirement.• Students who speak English as a second language will meet the language requirement withdemonstrated proficiency in both the primary language and English. In some circumstances, the studentmay be required to demonstrate proficiency through examination in either the primary language or inEnglish.• The BS,N requires 2 years of foreign language in high school or two quarters of foreign language incollege. College foreign language can be used to fulfill the Humanities electives. Additionally, for theBS,N the students will need 15 credit hours of upper division elective (not available at OHSU).• Students should understand that although co‐admitted to the Oregon Health Sciences University Schoolof Nursing, those who choose to transition from the MHCC Nursing Program to OHSU will have toundergo a Criminal Background Check for OHSU at the time of transition and ability to enroll in OHSUcourses may be negatively impacted by any criminal history in their background.• The prerequisite year of the program is devoted to prerequisite courses required before the first quarterof the Nursing program. Year Two of the OCNE program is comprised of identical courses for associateand bachelor’s work. The third quarter of Year Three offers students the ability to complete the AASdegree (and eligibility for NCLEX‐RN licensure testing) or can be used to begin the coursework for theBachelor of Science degree in Nursing (BS) or a combination of both. Fifteen credit hours of non‐nursingcoursework must be upper division courses (300‐400 level courses) for the Bachelors Degree in Nursing.• It is important for students to be aware that residency requirements differ between OCNE schools andOHSU. Meeting the in‐state tuition residency requirement for MHCC does not ensure students will beeligible for residency and in‐state tuition at OHSU. Please visit the OHSU website, www.ohsu.edu, forinformation on meeting residency requirements.• For additional OCNE curriculum information, please refer to the OCNE website, www.ocne.org.OCNE TRANSITION TO BACCALAUREATE PROGRAM AT OHSU – NOTES:• Of the 87 graded non‐nursing credit hours (including prerequisites) required to complete a Bachelor ofScience degree in Nursing at OHSU (minimum total of 180 credit hours), 9 must be Humanities credithours. Fifteen of the 87 credit hours must be upper division credit hours obtained at other four yearcolleges or universities.• Statistics: Course needs to include both descriptive and inferential components.• Foreign Language Proficiency Requirement: Language proficiency is a baccalaureate graduationrequirement that can be met by 1) two years of the same language in high school, 2) two quarters of thesame language at the college level, or 3) a language proficiency examination. College level (100 andabove) credit hours in the foreign languages count toward the 45 prerequisite credit hours as well as theassociate degree and baccalaureate degree credit hours.
