OnJanuary 22, 1937, Maestro Katz began changing<strong>the</strong> lives of young people through classical music when he founded hisorchestra. For more than seven decades, he dedicated himself to “GiveYouth A Chance to be Heard” <strong>with</strong>out accepting government subsidy,<strong>with</strong>out soliciting contributions, <strong>with</strong>out remuneration <strong>and</strong> <strong>with</strong>outcharging membership or audition fees. More than 70,000 musicians,ages 12 through 25, have participated in annual auditions <strong>and</strong> more than10,000 have been selected for membership. The JPO will be joined bysome of its alumni for a gr<strong>and</strong> musical program. Many performancesby <strong>the</strong> Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra are volunteered <strong>with</strong> proceeds goingto charitable causes. For his unprecedented service to youth in music,Dr. Katz was presented <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong> Points of Light Community Volunteersterling silver medallion by <strong>the</strong> President of <strong>the</strong> United States in aWhite House ceremony on December 13, 2002.The Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic is <strong>the</strong> orchestrawhere lawyers, judges, law students <strong>and</strong> legal staff meet in harmony.<strong>Conductor</strong>/attorney <strong>Gary</strong> S. <strong>Greene</strong> founded <strong>the</strong> orchestra on January19, 2009, to bring <strong>the</strong> legal community toge<strong>the</strong>r. Since its inception,<strong>the</strong> Lawyers Phil has performed30 concerts. Last year, Maestro<strong>Greene</strong> decided to add to his “legal”ensemble by forming a 100-voicechorus, which he named LegalVoices. The chorus debuted atWalt Disney Concert Hall <strong>with</strong> <strong>the</strong>orchestra in July. Choral DirectorChristopher D. Haygood leads <strong>the</strong>chorus in its weekly rehearsals.The Los Angeles County Board ofSupervisors unanimously proclaimed<strong>the</strong> Lawyers Phil <strong>and</strong> Legal Voicesare “LA’s Only Legal Orchestra <strong>and</strong>Chorus.” Former presiding judgeof <strong>the</strong> Los Angeles Superior Court,Hon. Charles W. McCoy, presented<strong>the</strong> orchestra <strong>with</strong> a proclamationstating, “…<strong>the</strong> LA Lawyers Phil hasbecome a highly valued member of<strong>the</strong> societal fabric of <strong>the</strong> Los Angeleslegal community.”<strong>Gary</strong> S. <strong>Greene</strong>, an attorneyfor 36 years, is a violinist <strong>and</strong>conductor. He was <strong>the</strong> longtimeconcertmaster of <strong>the</strong> Jr.Philharmonic, having joined<strong>the</strong> orchestra in 1963. He began conducting as a teenager <strong>and</strong> hasconducted most major classical works as well as popular pieces forlegendary performers including Edward Asner, Jordan Bennett, DebbyBoone, Pat Boone, Richard Chamberlain, Carol Channing, Kevin Early,Richard Fredricks, Robert Goulet, Peter Graves, Florence Henderson,Carol Lawrence, Brock Peters, Stefanie Powers, Debbie Reynolds,Mickey Rooney, Sha Na Na, Dick Van Dyke <strong>and</strong> Michael York. Mr.<strong>Greene</strong> is a summa cum laude graduate from UCLA <strong>and</strong> member ofPhi Beta Kappa.
