OnJanuary 22, 1937, Maestro Katz began changingthe lives of young people through classical music when he founded hisorchestra. For more than seven decades, he dedicated himself to “GiveYouth A Chance to be Heard” without accepting government subsidy,without soliciting contributions, without remuneration and withoutcharging membership or audition fees. More than 70,000 musicians,ages 12 through 25, have participated in annual auditions and more than10,000 have been selected for membership. The JPO will be joined bysome of its alumni for a grand musical program. Many performancesby the Jr. Philharmonic Orchestra are volunteered with proceeds goingto charitable causes. For his unprecedented service to youth in music,Dr. Katz was presented with the Points of Light Community Volunteersterling silver medallion by the President of the United States in aWhite House ceremony on December 13, 2002.The Los Angeles Lawyers Philharmonic is the orchestrawhere lawyers, judges, law students and legal staff meet in harmony.Conductor/attorney Gary S. Greene founded the orchestra on January19, 2009, to bring the legal community together. Since its inception,the Lawyers Phil has performed30 concerts. Last year, MaestroGreene decided to add to his “legal”ensemble by forming a 100-voicechorus, which he named LegalVoices. The chorus debuted atWalt Disney Concert Hall with theorchestra in July. Choral DirectorChristopher D. Haygood leads thechorus in its weekly rehearsals.The Los Angeles County Board ofSupervisors unanimously proclaimedthe Lawyers Phil and Legal Voicesare “LA’s Only Legal Orchestra andChorus.” Former presiding judgeof the Los Angeles Superior Court,Hon. Charles W. McCoy, presentedthe orchestra with a proclamationstating, “…the LA Lawyers Phil hasbecome a highly valued member ofthe societal fabric of the Los Angeleslegal community.”Gary S. Greene, an attorneyfor 36 years, is a violinist andconductor. He was the longtimeconcertmaster of the Jr.Philharmonic, having joinedthe orchestra in 1963. He began conducting as a teenager and hasconducted most major classical works as well as popular pieces forlegendary performers including Edward Asner, Jordan Bennett, DebbyBoone, Pat Boone, Richard Chamberlain, Carol Channing, Kevin Early,Richard Fredricks, Robert Goulet, Peter Graves, Florence Henderson,Carol Lawrence, Brock Peters, Stefanie Powers, Debbie Reynolds,Mickey Rooney, Sha Na Na, Dick Van Dyke and Michael York. Mr.Greene is a summa cum laude graduate from UCLA and member ofPhi Beta Kappa.
