TBJ LONG RANGE PLANNING: UPDATE REPORTAs many of you know, in 2008 TBJ embarked on a LongRange Planning process. The purpose of this process wasseveral fold: to redefine the vision and mission of the congregation;to consider the demographic, competitive andother challenges facing the congregation; to reassess thestructure, function and audiences of the congregation; and, finally, to develop measurable objectives to move thecongregation from its present state to a more completefulfillment of its redefined mission.A Long Range Planning Committee was formed, anexternal consultant was hired, and assignments were made!Over the past year, the committee has worked on:✡ Redefining our mission, vision, values,✡ Articulating our external and internal challenges andopportunities,✡ Identifying all of our life-cycle learning and programming,✡ Reviewing our building and grounds current and future use,✡ Evaluating our leadership and governance, and✡ Connecting with the congregation’s various constituenciesthrough the conduct of focus groups. As we begin to draft the results of the process to date andmove into the next phase, we want to share with you whatwe have learned and the changes that we will be implementingover time. Please look for our updates, labeled “UpdateReport — TBJ Long Range Planning” in Temple Tidings. So what did the Focus Groups have to say about TBJ?Over a 5-month period in late 2008, with direction fromour Long Range Planning Consultant Rabbi David Teutchand committee members, we conducted nine differentfocus groups representing the following constituenciesof the congregation:✡ Parents of pre-school age children✡ Parents of religious school children✡ Empty nesters✡ Singles✡ Older seniors✡ Younger seniors✡ Teens✡ Parents of teens✡ Geographically distanced congregantsEach focus group had a trained facilitator whose purposewas to explain the long range planning process to the group, ask questions, facilitate discussion, and stay neutral. Eachfocus group also had a designated scribe to capture theessence of what was said. All discussions were confidential. The questions dealt with each group’s current impressions ofthe congregation, areas of strengths and areas of improvement.Summary comments among the various groupsare noted below:✡ Strong feeling that the congregation is headed in apositive direction✡ Appreciation for the leadership of Rabbi Gewirtz✡ More warmth and personal connections are being made now✡ Support for the clergy to take on difficult issues fromthe pulpit✡ Support for the richness and diversity of the programming✡ Special mention was made of Shabbat B’Shir led byCantor Stahl and the inspiring High Holy Days servicesMore constituency specific comments included:✡ ECC class size✡ Active and vibrant religious school, challenge to keep itinteresting, interactive, topical, and have youth groupview TBJ as a place to be✡ Older groups pleased with TBJ and clergy, but challengeis to stay connected✡ Parking and physical layout of facility is challenging✡ Making sure clergy, programming and activities connectwith each of the constituencies✡ Teens just want to come and hang out, what’s HebrewSchool really about?!?!?!✡ Diversity of TBJ population cited as a real positive, makesure communication of happenings done in advance toaccommodate distance.Stay tuned for our next Update Report!Abby WinkelriedRichard MandelChairpeopleFebruary/March 2010 • Shevat/Adar/Nisan Congregation B’nai Jeshurun: www.tbj.org 3

Thelessons of scarcity are taught to our children through scienceand literature, such as Dr. Seuss’s The Lorax. In a series ofsilly songs and rhymes, we learn of the Onceler, a greedyentrepreneur, who stumbles across the forest of the trufulatrees, home of the Brown Barbaloots, the Swommy-Swans,the Humming Fish, and their protector, the Lorax. As theOnceler expands his business, trufula trees are swiftly hackedand before long, the Barbaloots leave the forest, the Swommy-Swan is gone, and the Humming Fish are forced to walk ondry land in search of clear water in which to swim. (Does thissound familiar?)“I am the Lorax and I speak for the trees. I speak for thetrees for the trees have no tongues, so I’m asking you, Sir, at thetop of my lungs…” The Lorax pleads with the Onceler to stophis destructive ways and save the forest of the trufula trees, but to no avail.A young boy wanders the forest searching to learn of theLorax and his fight for the trees. With no plant or animal liferemaining and in need of advocacy, the Lorax is lifted away, leaving behind a tree stump, a pile of rocks, and a carvingof the word, “unless.”“What’s unless?” the boy asks. The Onceler replies, “just afar away word, just a far away thought, about something thatsomeday, somebody ought. Unless someone like you cares awhole awful lot, nothing’s going to get better. It’s not.” At theend of his story, the Onceler places in the boys hand the lastof the seeds of the trufula trees. He charges him to plant it, andtreat it with care, giving it clean water and air. Advocating forthe trees and the inhabitants of the forest was the passion ofthe Lorax. But who or what else has no voice to be heard? Whoelse is relying on our pleas, if need, at the top of our lungs?Heeding the call to Social Action the students of our 10 thGrade Confirmation Class attended the L’taken Social JusticeSeminar sponsored by the Religious Action Center for ReformJudaism. Joinedby 250 teens from across the United States, this unique opportunityenables our students to hear from experts both insideand outside the Jewish community on diverse issues in a varietyof interactive formats. The seminar also included an opportunityfor students to tour the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum andparticipate in a Havdalah service at the Jefferson Memorial. The culmination of their visit to Washington was a visit toCapitol Hill where students used the information gained in theirworkshops to meet with Legislative Assistants to our New JerseySenators and Representatives. We are obliged to do thisas individuals and as a caring congregational community.TBJ’s Caring Community Committee, with the supportof our Women’s Association and Brotherhood, sponsors aShiva Minyan Corps comprised of TBJ members who havebeen trained to conduct minyan services at congregants’homes during the shiva period. While it is the clergy’s intention to continue to conductsuch services and to be available to any and all TBJ familiesin need, there are occasions when scheduling becomes achallenge. Many congregations have a trained corps of congregantswho stand ready to perform the mitzvah of leadinga minyan service in a house of mourning. As you know, these services need not be conducted by a rabbi or cantor.Any knowledgeable lay person may lead a minyan. This serviceis brief and, with the exception of the Kaddish, is usuallyconducted in English. The members of our Shiva MinyanCorps have received specialized training covering therubrics of the service, issues associated with grief and loss, and how to be comfortable and comforting at a shiva house. If you are interested in becoming part of this very specialgroup, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contactCantor Stahl at hstahl@tbj.org. THE ROSALIND & ALFRED LIPPMAN GALLERYLinda K. LeviLinda K. Shehas found that watercolor has been her personal vehicle toopen up many creative avenues and feels blessed that she isable to visualize her environment and express her reactionsthrough various mediums.Richard D. He has usedthis unique style in more than fifty pieces which hang inhomes in Florida, Michigan, Canada and London.BESA: Albanian Muslims Who Saved JewsThe Art Committee of TBJ is proud to present a travelingphotographic exhibit from Hebrew Union College entitledBESA: Albanian Muslims Who Saved Jews During World War II —Photographs by Norman Gershman. Norman Gershman isa New Jersey photographer who has travelled to Albania totake pictures of the families of the Albanian Muslims who rescuedJews during the Holocaust, at great peril to themselves. When asked why they did this, the response of the rescuerswas that the Koran told them to open their doors to thosein need. We have scheduled this exhibit so it will be in theTemple on Yom HaShoah, March 23 rd through May 4 th . Albaniawas the only European country to boast a larger numberof Jewish people after the Holocaust than it had prior to theHolocaust. Besa is an Albanian code of honor, which means“to keep the promise.” It is the Besa of the Albanian peoplethat Gershman captures in his photographs.February/March 2010 • Shevat/Adar/Nisan Congregation B’nai Jeshurun: www.tbj.org 9
