TempleTidingsThe Journal of Congregation B’nai JeshurunBE OUR “FRIEND”by Rabbi Karen R. PerolmanMarch/April 2012Nisan/Iyar/Sivan 5772Friend. noun. \’frend \1. one attached to another by affectionor esteem2. acquaintance3. one that is not hostile4. one that is of the same nation, party, or group5. one that favors or promotessomething (as a charity)6. favored companionBefore you read this, pause for amoment and make a mental list ofyour friends. I would guess that thislist includes people you have known for a very long time, peopleso close that you consider them family. This list may also includepeople with whom you have much in common; people of thesame age group, people with whom you share interests, evenpeople you have met through your parents, siblings, childrenor partner. Finally, there may be some people on your list whoare recent friends. Is your synagogue on your list of friends? I would guess not.Not because you don’t consider TBJ to be important, butbecause many of us consider friends to only be people. Not anymore. This past month, Facebook, the social networking site, celebrated its 8 th anniversary. In less than a decade, Facebookhas revolutionized the way many of us keep in touch with our“friends.” 845 million people are Facebook users, half of themaccessing the site from a mobile device, and the Facebookinterface is available in 70 languages. For some, logging ontoFacebook is their first web-act of the day, before checkingemail, news or stocks. For others, Facebook is the place toshare news — from the most important, such as engagementor new babies — to the mundane, a great hamburger or a reviewof the latest movie. More and more businesses, public figuresand companies use Facebook to advertise, share their messagesand interact with fans and supporters.Since its inception, synagogues have struggled to find theappropriate place in the Facebook-sphere. Clergy have discussedwhether a Facebook presence is important, and if so, whatinformation should be shared. How can we ensure that theJewish values that guide our community also guide our onlinepresence? How do we control and prevent gossip, bullyingand the invasion of privacy? Even more, we have wondered if,like other revolutions of the past, if Facebook will be a passingfad, something that years from now, we will only vaguelyremember.Long before Facebook was a glimmer in Mark Zuckerburg’seye, TBJ has been working to create and maintain a sacred andconnected community. It is the reason why we publish a membershipdirectory, share simchas each month in the TempleTidings and send out Bereavement notices when someone inour community passes away. We believe that a synagogue ismore than a place we come for Shabbat services, religiousschool, programs, and meetings. A synagogue should be abeit kehilah, a gathering place for learning, sharing, andfinding meaning in our own lives. It is the reason we askfor names before we pray for healing on Friday nights: Webelieve that a caring community must be a connected one.How should we connect with each other? Most importantly,in person. Certainly, we can also connect through phone calls, emails and other forms of e-communication. Yet I think weshould add Facebook as another way we connect with oneanother. While I do not believe that it is the only way toconnect, nor do I think that public, online communicationcan replace face-to-face interactions, I do believe that anonline synagogue presence, shaped by the values that haveguided our community for generations, can improve andexpand the ways in which we communicate with our B’naiJeshurun Family. Our TBJ Facebook page has been up for several months andhas begun to garner “friends” and “fans.” Your clergy are sharingour blog posts, relevant articles and Temple events there andwe hope, with your support, to create a sacred and connectedonline TBJ community. It is our goal that our Facebook pagebecomes a place that we can share with, connect to and careabout those we see in person and those in our communitywe might not know. If you are a Facebook user, we hope tobecome your “friend” very soon as we work toward the creationof a connected and caring community on-and offline.Facebook.com/CongregationBnaiJeshurunFacebook.com/TBJinNYC

EDUCATIONThe Passover SederSeder nights are one of the most memorable holidays ofthe Jewish calendar. The Seder meals are a time when smallor extended families gather together to enjoy good foodand the re-telling of the story of our people’s liberation frombondage. The essential good deed of Passover is to tell thestory of the Exodus from Egypt to the children of the family. We do not merely retell the story, we relive the event. As theHaggadah tells us: in every generation, each of us is obligatedto see ourselves as having come out of Egypt. Each person comes to the Seder with his or her own setof expectations and experiences based on previous familySeders and/or internalized information they have learned. If you have young children, the challenge each year becomesHow do we create a seder to engage our children? How dowe make these special holiday meals a meaningful andwondrous experience for young participants? The ancient rabbis encouraged parents to distribute nutsand other treats during the Passover dinner to keep childrenawake and interested (Pesachim 109a). They sought topromote curiosity through questions, special foods, unusual dining practices, and (in the case of bargainingfor the afikomen) out-and-out bribery. How can we make the seder so relevant that our childrenwill turn to us and ask What is the meaning behind allthese decrees, laws, and rules that Adonai our God hascommanded (concerning Passover)? (Deuteronomy 6:20)Involve Your Children! Let them help create the shoppinglist which consists of so many foods that are special to thisholiday. Discuss why you are purchasing matzah, parsley, horseradish and a lamb’s bone and what part they will playin the seder. Let them help prepare the meal. Charoset is notonly fun to make — it’s yummy to eat! Young children aregreat table setters! They can help count place settings, foldnapkins and help decorate place cards. Allow your childrento create an afikoman bag for each child attending yourseder. When it’s time to find the afikoman — everyone wins!Music and singing is always a highlight. Having an openspace with some tambourines, shakers and instruments forthe children to use while dancing and singing helps providea break during the seder. When selecting a Haggadah, thinkabout your family and guests. If your family consists ofmany children you might want to consider adding orreplacing readings with a child-friendly version. In ourhome, we use TBJ’s Family Haggadah supplemented bythe oldest child (with help from her siblings and cousins)retelling her version of the Passover story.Reading stories about Passover is one of the best waysto introduce the holiday. Some suggested books include:A Seder With the Animals by Howard I. Bogot andMary K. BogotA Sammy’s Spiders First Passover by Syliva A. RoussA I Love Passover by Anne, Jonathan and Norma RosenA seder is only as successful as its participants.Whether it’s through storytelling, cooking, singing, dancingor art — get everyone involved! Remember, what reallyengages young children are the joy and enthusiasm theysee from you, their parents, grandparents, aunts anduncles. It’s contagious! With best wishes for a Happy and Healthy Passover.Barbara HochbergDirector, The Rabbi Barry H.
