Margaret was a catholic so it was most unusual for her to be married by a Presbyterian
minister. Perhaps it was because there was no Catholic church in the area. The
Presbyterian Church was established in Matuara around 1874.
The witnesses at the wedding were H Cameron and J S Shanks. Perhaps H Cameron
employed Margaret at the Cameron Hotel as cook and J S Shanks employed Edward as
a clerk. This is only a theory and has to be researched further to confirm.
I have a photograph of the two story Cameron’s Hotel, also known as the Mataura Hotel
where Margaret and Edward were married in 1880. The Mataura Hotel was situated
opposite the Railway Station.
