The Kelloggfamily added a daughter-in-law whentheir son married in October. A 33-yearveteran referee and former UnitedStates Soccer Federation (USSF)administrator, Herb is responsiblefor referee education, training andassignment, as well as the overallmanagement of the referees workingin the various sanctioned professionalleagues. He is a national emeritusreferee as well as a USSF nationalassessor and instructor in the UnitedStates Soccer National Program forReferee Development. He is also aUSSF youth-licensed coach and servesas the vice president of the MissouriSoccer Association.DAVID HART ’69, of Franklin, TN,produced a DVD for the orientationof trustees of <strong>MacMurray</strong> <strong>College</strong>.It was well received at Mac, so heentered it into the Marcom Awardscontest for 2010. Out of over 8,000entries, about 5 percent were awardedplatinum level and 15 percent goldlevel awards. He received a gold levelaward. David says, “My name and<strong>MacMurray</strong>’s name are listed in theGold winner section of the Marcomwebsite.”BARBARA RAY JENKINS’71, of Laguna Vista, TX,retired in 2003 after morethan 20 years of teaching at the IllinoisSchool for the Visually Impaired inJacksonville, IL. She and her husband,Robert, now enjoy life in the RioGrande Valley during the winter, falland spring. Sheled the Mustangs to Eastern IowaHawkeye Conference titles in 2006and 2008 and had Mount Vernon-Lisbon ranked in the top 15 in thestate in both 2007 and 2008. She alsocoached 32 all-conference players,as well as 11 all-state athletes andplans to continue as Mount Vernon-Lisbon’s coach in the spring while alsocoaching at IWC. <strong>MacMurray</strong>LeadershipScholarshipHead of department retiresLeadership ScholarshipAfter more than 15years at the <strong>College</strong>,Serviceprofessor John Coxretired at the close of thespring semester. Cox servedas chair of the division of social andbehavioral sciences and as a social workprofessor. “<strong>MacMurray</strong> has rich traditionsand history,” said Cox. “Its strong valueshave endured over generations, which isnot easy to find.”Cox says he knew he wanted to bea teacher since high school. “Teachingis a special commission and a greatresponsibility,” he said. “We havestewardship of these students’ lives forfour or five years. Watching them developinto young adults who are preparedto begin their careers was the mostrewarding part of my job.”Cox focused on ethics, professionaldevelopment and teamwork. He regularlypublished and presented papersthroughout his time at <strong>MacMurray</strong> ontopics such as social work with membersof the military and their families and socialwork in rural areas. His research informedthe special topics classes he taught.Before coming to <strong>MacMurray</strong>, CoxSocial Work<strong>College</strong>served as a colonel in the UnitedStates Air Force. He says theteaching and mentoring he did asan officer in the military translated toteaching at the collegiate level.Cox says <strong>MacMurray</strong>’s socialwork program fills an importantrole in the region by preparingstudents who practice in ruralcommunities. “We have muchhuman need, there are toomany people who are poorand vulnerable and suffer,”said Cox. “In social work, weprepare practitioners to workon the frontline to ease humansuffering and providea better quality of life.I believe it is what<strong>MacMurray</strong> doesbest, prepare futuregenerations of socialworkers, teachers,nurses, and otherprofessionals to servetheir communities. Each girl added a shovel of dirt and dubbed the tree Maggie. Although Main Hall no longer stands,96 years later Maggie herself remains at the corner of Clay and State streets, outside the Putnam/SpringerCenter – a constant reminder of her presence every spring, with a colorful display of pink and white blossomsaccompanied by the inviting scent of magnolia.
