In addition,National Public Radio’s “All Things Considered” broadcast an interview with Metcalf . Hewas also a guest on Chicago’s WGN-AM radio “Extension 720” hosted by Milt Rosenberg of theUniversity of Chicago.OK charts the evolution of “American’s most popular word” from its inception as a lame joke in1839 to its use all over the world today. As a sign of the international reach of the word, OK, Metcalfalso had radio reviews from stations as far away as Brazil and New Zealand. The word is ubiquitous though hardly noticed. We use it in casual conversation countless timeseach day, and it was the first word spoken on the moon. In two letters, Metcalf claims, OK succinctlysums up the American philosophy of pragmatism and also the “I’m OK, you’re OK” philosophyof tolerance.OK is the latest of Metcalf’s half a dozen books on language, including in 2004Presidential Voices: Speaking Styles from George Washington to George W. Bush.He is professor of English, college registrar, and executive secretary of the AmericanDialect Society.OK is published by Oxford University Press and is available from online andretail bookstores. He will be happy to autograph any copy of the book. Email himat allan.metcalf@mac.edu.Dr. Metcalf, who is now the College’s Registrar, has been teaching and advisingMacMurray students for longer than 35 years and received the United MethodistAward for Teaching Excellence in 2000. He has served as the chair of theEnglish Department and founded the College’s journalism program in 1975.
